Excerpt from Impressions and Opinions A publisher will not bring out a new edition without a preface, and we find prefaces difficult to write. Three weeks were spent on the preface to Spring Days, for a long screed had been contemplated containing many new and ingenious theories of literature; but as these did not seem to prepare the reader's mind for the book he was going to read, an anecdote was substituted, and a hundred newspapers related that the author had bought up and pilfered as many copies of the original edition as he could, and had thrown them into the Thames. We have nothing so picturesque to tell in the present preface, but merely that the author was sinking in a flood of public disfavour caused by Spring Days, and the book that followed Spring Days (its name we fear to pronounce), when Impressions and Opinions, like a big Newfoundland dog, dived after him and brought him to shore. And all that we have to tell of the further career of this book is that it seems to have retained the admiration it first inspired, and to have made some friends in the last twenty years. The fatal truth is, that the serious intellect is in England an intellect culti vated at the expense of its owner's taste. Mr. Grant Allen - in high repute as the exponent of popular Darwinism, the apostle of Darwinism to the Gentiles - is thus only following in the footsteps of the Master. The way in which people of this type regard the drama was significantly shown when Mr. \villiam Archer published his Masks or Faces? This book, which was remarkable as being the first really scientific investigation (in English) of the psychology of histrionics, was entrusted for review - one would have thought, fitly - by a certain editor to a certain man of science. What said our reviewer? Did he rejoice that the true scientific method had at length invaded the literature of the stage - a region hitherto laid waste by the flashy anecdote-monger and the shallow empiricist? Not he. He only acknow ledged the scientific spirit of the book in order to complain that it should have been thrown away on such a trashy subject. What does it matter, he argued in effect, whether actors do or do not feel their parts? What interest can serious intellects take in a matter so piflling?
