"The best book on Japanese architecture ever produced by a Westerner." —The American Architect Japanese architecture is undoubtedly less well known and less appreciated than the architecture of any other civilized nation. Not only this, but it is almost universally misjudged, and while the world has by degrees come to know and admire the pictorial and industrial arts of Japan, her architecture, which is the rot and vehicle of all other modes of art, is passed over with a casual reference to its fantastic quality or a patronizing tribute to the excellence of some of its carved decoration. Written at a time when Japanese art was only beginning to be appreciated in the West, Impressions of Japanese Architecture conveys a sense of discovery and enthusiasm that modern readers will find as interesting and infectious as the book's first readers did. Long considered a classic, this new edition contains a foreword by acclaimed contemporary architect and author, Mira Locher. Originally published about one hundred years ago, Impressions of Japanese Architecture is still of immense value to anyone wishing for a better understanding of Japanese architecture, art and culture.

Not illustrated. 1906 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER X THE FUTURE OF JAPANESE ART WITH the close of the nineteenth century art as a vital thing, a racial attribute, came to its end in Japan. For thirteen hundred years it had been an essential part of a varied but unbroken civilization. All true art, all art, that is, which is more than sporadic and episodical, is a component part of the culture of a race. It cannot be created, it is doubtful even if it may be fostered, consciously at any rate. It is a sign of wholesome life, of the acceptance of high ideals, and of an honest effort, whether successful or not, at putting them into practise. It has never existed without religion of some sort as its supreme impulse and its ultimate goal. The art of Japan, like the art of Hellenism and of Medieval Christianity, was the natural and inevitable expression of this plexus of conditions and tendencies. It was onq of the first fruits of the Buddhist mission of the sixth century, and as that mission within two hundlrecT years fixed a permanent type of lofty civilization in Japan, so did art follow step by step. For another thousand years this civilization continued through-many vicissitudes, th'ough never lapsing into, or even tending towards, barbarism. The art history was identical, the modes of its manifestation were various: now architecture, now painting, then literature, sculpture, the drama, or again the industrial arts. Note, however, that nothing intrinsically bad was ever done, all was good, better, or best. The religious inspiration of Buddhism and the overmastering loyalty of Shinto fixed a type of character, chivalrous, honourable, self-sacrificing, that has persisted without visible weakening or failure until this day. The same impulses, or the racial character they created, ...

Architects throughout the world hold Japan's best architecture in high regard, considering the country's buildings among the world's most carefully crafted and innovative. While many books, magazines, and exhibitions have focused on the results of architectural practice in Japan, this book is the first to explain the reasons for Japan's remarkable structures. Architecture does not occur in isolation; Japan's architects are able to collaborate with a wide variety of people from professional consultants to constructors. Dana Buntrock discusses architecture as a part of the construction community, moving from historical precedents that predate the emergence of the architectural profession in Japan through to contemporary practices.

The Constructed Other argues that the assumed otherness of Japanese architecture has made it both a testbed for Western architectural theories and a source of inspiration for Western designers. The book traces three recurring themes in Western accounts of Japanese architecture from the reopening of Japan in the mid-nineteenth century to the present day: a wish to see Western architectural theories reflected in Japanese buildings; efforts to integrate elements of Japanese architecture into Western buildings; and a desire to connect contemporary Japanese architecture with Japanese tradition. It is suggested that, together, these narratives have had the effect of creating what amounts to a mythical version of Japanese architecture, often at odds with historical fact, but which has exercised a powerful influence on the development of building design internationally.

Contemporary Japanese Architecture presents a clear and comprehensive overview of the historical and cultural framework that informs the work of all Japanese architects, as an introduction to an in-depth investigation of the challenges now occupying the contemporary designers who will be the leaders of the next generation. It separates out the young generation of Japanese architects from the crowded, distinguished, multi-generational field they seek to join, and investigates the topics that absorb them, and the critical issues they face within the new economic reality of Japan and a shifting global order. Salient points in the text are illustrated by beautiful, descriptive images provided by the architects and from the extensive collection of the author. By combining illustrations with timelines and graphics to explain complex ideas, the book is accessible to any student seeking to understand contemporary Japanese architecture.

Arts And Crafts Architecture written by Maureen Meister and has been published by University Press of New England this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-04 with Architecture categories.

This book offers the first full-scale examination of the architecture associated with the Arts and Crafts movement that spread throughout New England at the turn of the twentieth century. Although interest in the Arts and Crafts movement has grown since the 1970s, the literature on New England has focused on craft production. Meister traces the history of the movement from its origins in mid-nineteenth-century England to its arrival in the United States and describes how Boston architects including H. H. Richardson embraced its tenets in the 1870s and 1880s. She then turns to the next generation of designers, examining buildings by twelve of the region's most prominent architects, eleven men and a woman, who assumed leadership roles in the Society of Arts and Crafts, founded in Boston in 1897. Among them are Ralph Adams Cram, Lois Lilley Howe, Charles Maginnis, and H. Langford Warren. They promoted designs based on historical precedent and the region's heritage while encouraging well-executed ornament. Meister also discusses revered cultural personalities who influenced the architects, notably Ralph Waldo Emerson and art historian Charles Eliot Norton, as well as contemporaries who shared their concerns, such as Louis Brandeis. Conservative though the architects were in the styles they favored, they also were forward-looking, blending Arts and Crafts values with Progressive Era idealism. Open to new materials and building types, they made lasting contributions, with many of their designs now landmarks honored in cities and towns across New England.
