Excerpt from Improvement of the Wheat Crop in California An impression exists among many California farmers that the soil will no longer produce profitable yields of good milling wheats This impression is strengthened by two well - recognized facts (1) That under past and present methods of wheat culture the soil is failing in many localities to produce as large crops as heretofore, and (2) that the Australian and Club varieties, the most widely grown California wheats, are extremely starchy. As only these very starchy varieties have been extensively grown, it has become necessary for the millers to import large quantities of Turkey wheat from the Middle West to blend with the California wheats. Excerpt from The Wheat Situation: Including Rye There has been a marked improvement since last December in the condition of the United States winter wheat cr0p in the Southern Great Plains area, and a general improvement in practically all other areas of the country except in California, where the weather has been dry. The April 1 indicated crop of 549 million bushels, together with average yields on the prospective planted acreag of Spring wheat, would produce a total wheat cr0p of about 750 million bushels, or 180 million bushels smaller than last year. A crop this size would be 70 mi lion bushels above domestic disappearance during the period 1928-37. If the carry-over on July 1, 1939 is about 275 million bushels and production 1s as im oated above, the total domestic supply for 1939-40 would be million bushe about 60 million bushels smaller than the 1938-39 supply. Excerpt from Crops and Markets, Vol. 8: May, 1931 T - he improvement in winter wheat prospects during April 18 the result of generally favorable growing conditions in all but a few of the -1ead-ing winter wheat States. The cool temper atures during the last 10 days of. April were favorable. Moisture has been sufficient for the needs of the plant in most States. Of greater significance is the fact. That the moisture supply is not excessive, experience having shown that excess moisture? Rather than drought, is more of a limiting factor to wheat yields east of the plains regions. The damage from March' and April freezes in the plains States is not thought to be very great Injury to the crop resulted from the severe winds in the Northern Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Northwest and _from drought conditions 111 California. Excerpt from The Californian Wheat Industry Most of this Californian wheat is exported either to Europe or the East, or to Central and South America; occasionally it has been sent to Australia. These enterprising people are sending their wheat not only to China and Japan, but actually to Europe by way of the Pacific and the Suez Canal in other words, are growing wheat of the Australian class and sending it in steamers, six thousand miles further, to the same market. The fact that wheat of our own class, grown under climatic conditions similar to ours, is made the basis of a large export trade cannot fail to be of interest to our wheat-growers and merchants, and any lessons to be learned from a study of the particulars of such an industry are lessons we should master at the earliest opportunity. This thought gave zest to much of my recent travel in California and other Pacific Coast States of North America.
