Set in an isolated coal-mining town in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, In a Bluebird's Eye is a moving portrayal of the world of a young girl growing up in the 1930s. Although America is in the midst of the Depression, life in the provincial community of Margate has been unaffected. But suddenly the Black Diamond Coal Company announces its plans to close down, and the town is thrown into a state of panic. Eleven-year-old Honor Jane Whitfield sees the disintegration of the community as her salvation. A lonely, rebellious child, she hates Margate, where her father's drinking and her mother's petty snobbishness have made outcasts of the Whitfield family. She finds solace only in the private world of her imagination and in her secret friendship with Lola, a black woman who has served time in prison for killing a man. When Honor Jane learns that Lola is in danger of being sent back to prison, she devises a risky plan to save her, not realizing the danger involved.

For over three years, Shirley has been growing physically stronger and healthier with my help. Now you have the opportunity to grow spiritually stronger as you enjoy "His Eye is on the Sparrow," her first devotional. Nicholas Galuardi-Exercise Physiologist, Saratoga Health and Wellness Center. Saratoga Springs, NY. Shirley Andrews has brought forth the greatness of our God through the visualization of nature; through the lives and behaviors of some of Gods most colorful creatures, birds! Shirley brings together her words of wisdom and the power of her prayers as she shares with each new description. As I read the book, I gained a totally new insight into how our God, the Creator of all things, yearns for us to be close to Him. Through the Scripture and the photos we see clearly the loving beauty of Gods creation. I recommend this devotional for people who are looking for the gentleness, sweetness and loving kindness that comes to us through Shirleys ability to show us the greatness that comes from small things. I encourage each of you to take this devotional each day and see how God will reveal Himself to you and how we along with Shirley journey with her in her relationship with God. This book brings forth the greatness of God on each page! ENJOY! Rev. Patti Molik Elder, Upper New York Annual Conference United Methodist Church Shirley's wonderful compilation of prayer, Scripture, photography, and devotional reflections, contained in "His Eye Is On the Sparrow," provided me with a greater respect of the interdependence between humanity and creation and the way in which God's presence sustains and maintains the fragile balance between the two. This inspiring devotional highlights insightful lessons to each of us through the life of various birds God has gifted to the world. I know I will look at birds differently from now on. Rev. Penny Brink Elder, Upper New York Annual Conference United Methodist Church "Shirley turns our attention to the loving presence of God all around us and encourages us to step out in faith to receive the grace God is waiting to share with us." John Burroughs, the genial and tremendously popular author of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, has gained renewed appreciation at the end of the twentieth century. His quiet approach to nature writing—a combination of scientific observation and poetic spirit, has informed generations of readers. This book is a testament to the importance of his work in modern literature. In addition to exploring the historical aspects of Burroughs's life and character, these works illuminate his role as a writer and his relationships with such contemporaries as Whitman, Thoreau, Emerson, and Muir. Frank Bergan discusses Burroughs as environmentalist, Bill McKibben writes on Burroughs and the call of the "not so wild," Daniel Payne expounds on Burroughs's religion of nature, Wendell Berry considers the sacred economy of homesteading, and Ralph Black provides an analysis on Burroughs and the poetics of the nature essay. This book will have special appeal to those interested in nature writing, American literature, and environmental and cultural history of New York State. A section on the history and current use of Burroughs's work in the classroom also makes the book a valuable resource for teachers.

Why Do Bluebirds Hate Me written by Mike O'Connor and has been published by Beacon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-15 with Nature categories.

A collection of humorous Q&As about everything you've always wanted to ask about birds and birding Mike O’Connor knows bird watchers as well as he knows birds. He knows that if you’re even slightly interested in identifying birds or attracting them to your backyard with a feeder, then you’ve also had your share of strange and silly questions about birds and their sometimes inexplicable behavior. In Why Do Bluebirds Hate Me?, O’Connor applies his deep knowledge of all things avian to answer the questions that keep birders up at night. Questions like · Should you clean your birdhouses? · Do swallows have a feather fetish? · How much does it cost to run a heated birdbath? · Is drinking coffee bad for birds? Other questions O’Connor covers range from the practical (Should I rotate the seed in my feeder?) to the quirky (Why are vultures eating my vinyl screen door?) to the just plain adorable (Are those birds kissing or feeding each other?). And he also explains why bluebirds just don’t seem to like some people.

Psychiatrist Gene Brewer doesn't have a diagnosis for the mysterious new patient who calls himself "prot" (rhymes with goat). But this strange and likeable man cannot be--as he claims--from the planet K-PAX. Or can he? Prot knows facts about space that are confounding the experts. He is soon revealing Dr. Brewer's own deepest pains and most sublime longings. And his tales of K-PAX have other patients competing to go along with him when he heads "home". Now the doctor is racing the clock to find prot's true identity before he losses a man whose "madness" might just save them all. . .

When a man who claims to be from outer space is brought into the Manhattan Institute, the mental ward seems to be just the place for him. However, this patient is unlike anyone psychiatrist Dr. Gene Brewer has met before. Clever, inscrutable and utterly charismatic, Robert Porter calls himself 'prot' and has no traceable background - but he claims that he is an inhabitant of the planet K-PAX, a perfect world without wars, government or religion, and where every being co-exists in harmony. It's not long before the other patients are hanging on prot's every word. And even Dr Brewer starts to find himself convinced... This omnibus edition contains all three of the K-PAX novels, plus a bonus story, prot's report, and is as witty, quirky and enlightening as we have come to expect of Brewer's wonderful characters.

How do you come up with the idea to list all the birds in the world including the subspecies and to give all birds English names? There is a reason for it - my favorite saying, whose author is unknown: "Everyone said that ́s not possible - then there was one who did not know that and just did it!" I am an animal photographer and probably a little bit crazy. I ́ve built a complete animal database for mammals and birds over the last decade. This facilitates my work in determining and archiving images and assigning keywords, especially among the many subspecies. With this book, I would like to give all birding friends and ornithologists a complete overview in English. For this I have given unique English names to all subspecies. The naming should not meet any scientific requirements. The names are based on translations from the Latin name, geographical distribution areas and the names of the discoverers. The entries consist of the scientific name, the English name, the distribution areas and the author. I wish you a lot of fun with this book, but especially while watching the fascinating birdlife. fotolulu
