A renowned philosopher of the mind, also known for his groundbreaking work on Buddhism and cognitive science, Evan Thompson combines the latest neuroscience research on sleep, dreaming, and meditation with Indian and Western philosophy of mind, casting new light on the self and its relation to the brain. Thompson shows how the self is a changing process, not a static thing. When we are awake we identify with our body, but if we let our mind wander or daydream, we project a mentally imagined self into the remembered past or anticipated future. As we fall asleep, the impression of being a bounded self distinct from the world dissolves, but the self reappears in the dream state. If we have a lucid dream, we no longer identify only with the self within the dream. Our sense of self now includes our dreaming self, the "I" as dreamer. Finally, as we meditate—either in the waking state or in a lucid dream—we can observe whatever images or thoughts arise and how we tend to identify with them as "me." We can also experience sheer awareness itself, distinct from the changing contents that make up our image of the self. Contemplative traditions say that we can learn to let go of the self, so that when we die we can witness its dissolution with equanimity. Thompson weaves together neuroscience, philosophy, and personal narrative to depict these transformations, adding uncommon depth to life's profound questions. Contemplative experience comes to illuminate scientific findings, and scientific evidence enriches the vast knowledge acquired by contemplatives.

Old And New Methods Of Initiation written by Rudolf Steiner and has been published by Rudolf Steiner Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-05-26 with Religion categories.

What are the key differences between the contemporary spiritual path and that of the ancient mysteries? With remarkable clarity and insight, Rudolf Steiner throws new light on the contrasting methods of initiation in the ancient and modern day. The old mysteries worked to transform the physical body – 'the brain on the one hand, and the rest of the organism on the other' – whereas modern initiation 'transforms the element of spirit and soul, strengthening it with regard to the thought aspect on the one hand, and the will aspect on the other...' These wide-ranging lectures additionally cover topics that include: the working of Lucifer and Ahriman in the human being; the relationship of the individual to the Folk Spirit; the development of religious life, particularly with reference to the pagan Old Testament streams; and the role of Imagination, Inspiration and Intuition in modern life. The final lectures examine the impulse of freedom behind the work of Goethe and Schiller, drawing connections with Shakespeare and the French Revolution. An overarching theme is the significance of the transition between cultural epochs and the importance of freeing ourselves from the intellectualism of our age through the spiritual quality of Imaginative consciousness. This new edition features an introduction by Margaret Jonas, notes and an index. Fourteen lectures, Dornach, Mannheim & Breslau, Jan.–March 1922, GA 210

Dream Life Wake Life written by Gordon G. Globus and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1987-01-09 with Psychology categories.

Attempts to understand the human condition through dreaming reach back to antiquity, especially in such classical Indian philosophical texts as the Rg Veda and the Upanisads. In a more contemporary vein, Dream Life, Wake Life continues this investigation, as it views the dream as an open window on the waking human condition. The book discusses the major twentieth-century contributions to dream theory, beginning with Freud's 1900 psychoanalytical theory of dreaming and continuing through Jung's transpersonal and Boss's existential approaches. Recent phenomenological, cognitive, and biological developments are also considered. Dream Life, Wake Life addresses human creativity as illuminated by dreaming. While Freud held a "transformative" view of dreaming in which dream life is secondhand, formed by combining memory traces of diverse past waking experiences into novel compositions, Gordon G. Globus sees the process as creative, the fundamental creative action inherent in the human condition.

This edited volume shows the relationship between dream research and its usefulness in treating patients. Milton Kramer and Myron Glucksman show that there is support for searching for the meaning of dream as experiences extended in time. Dreaming reflects psychological changes and is actually an orderly process, not a random experience. Several chapters in this book explore interviewing methodologies that will help clients reduce the frequency of their nightmares and thus contribute to successful therapy.
