The tales, meditations and parables in this volume each centre in some way around an animal motif, raising questions about the mysterious forces we are subject to, and the ways in which we subject others to our own fears and desires. From short lyrical prose pieces about insects and birds, through dreamlike stories of talking whales and magical menageries, to passages resembling documentary of an overlooked or immaterial London existence, In cages, as in dreams is a collection that explores the prisons we can make of memory, grief, and the habits of our daily routines and modes of thinking. Written conjointly with Eclectica Canticorum, the two books are counterparts, enduring an oddly symbiotic relationship. Praise for James Wilson 'A writer perfectly attuned to the music of disappointment and the emptiness of crowded places' -John Muckle, Tears in the Fence 'The universal themes, the historical photos, the fine language... Savor this rare, truly creative work' -Leslie Raith, Curled up with A Good Book 'a sequence of searches...for what vanishes, for the transient and evanescent, the indeterminate and enigmatic' -Mike Freeman, The Literary London Journal 'Private and mysterious...the pieces read like moments snatched from dreams' -Terry Pitts, Vertigo

And Ness still has to reckon with her other fears - including her fear of mortality. It's easy to die in Newham, but hard to live. Vasily Eroshenko was one of the most remarkable transnational literary figures of the early twentieth century: a blind multilingual Esperantist from Ukraine who joined left-wing circles in Japan and befriended the famous modernist writer Lu Xun in China. Born in a small Ukrainian village in imperial Russia, he was blinded at a young age by complications from measles. Seeking to escape the limitations imposed on the blind, Eroshenko became a globe-trotting storyteller. He was well known in Japan and China as a social activist and a popular writer of political fairy tales that drew comparisons to Hans Christian Andersen and Oscar Wilde. The Narrow Cage and Other Modern Fairy Tales presents a selection of Eroshenko’s stories, translated from Japanese and Esperanto, to English readers for the first time. These fables tell the stories of a religiously disillusioned fish, a jealous paper lantern, a scholarly young mouse, a captive tiger who seeks to liberate his fellow animals, and many more. They are at once inventive and politically charged experiments with the fairy tale genre and charming, lyrical stories that will captivate readers as much today as they did during Eroshenko’s lifetime. In addition to eighteen fairy tales, the book includes semiautobiographical writings and prose poems that vividly evoke Eroshenko’s life and world.

The World Is A Bird In Cage written by Leon Tuam and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-05-12 with Poetry categories.

In 2009 when Leon Tuam's book Dieu Pleure aux Pieds de L'Homme was published, one of his best friends after congratulating him on the book added, "I hope your next publication is a novel or an essay... because poetry has lost readers' favor." Ah, no! the world (this caged bird) needs the poetry's saw and soothing balm. In these days, poetry must become the cherished child of the literature. Injustice, discrimination, selfishness and hate in our societies keep growing veiling often their faces with charming masks; conflicts, violence of words, wars and destruction are strong still. The readers of The World is a Bird in Cage will understand the uselessness of all these practices and will urgently make the right decision for the world. Most of the readers of this book will never be the same persons after reading it through. Thats what this book is indeed about. When the poets' nets dont stop those enemies of mankinds blooming and safety, later on, people always bury them using poetical implements around the tables. Always through a poetical language can true love, praises and pains be notably expressed; only through it can a culture be significantly celebrated. That's what this book is partly about. Poetry is love; poetry is peace that at times uses tough words in search of a lasting solution to problems. Poetry is powerful, and nothing can kill it. Poetry is a river amid the desert where, even the most arrogant of animals bends and quenches its thirst at the end of the day. About the author: Leon Tuam was born in Cameroon in a very large family. He loved the farm activities as his parents. From 1984 until 1991 he was seller of used books after the classes or before; and during the vacations he used to go to different weekly open-air markets to sell books. After a degree in Humanities at Lyce Classique de Bafoussam in 1989, he studied at the University of Yaound, Cameroon from 1989 until 1993; University of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso 1993-1995; University of Bnin, Togo 1995-1998. He moved to the USA in 1998. Leon Tuam is a former student leader, Human Rights activist and author of seven books in English and French; he is professor of Spanish and French and currently lives in Massachusetts, USA.

Harker Lee is a survivor. His mind withstands the threat of insanity and the pressure of imprisonment. His lifelong struggle to keep mind and body together in the face of the hostile environment of the maximum-security block is a struggle against the society of his fellow men. But that society can still find a need for him; a need for the ability to survive which it is testing to the full. He was taken from his cell once to be used in experiments in reading minds. Now he is brought forth again, to endure the ultimate test: to fly a Titan spaceship through hyperspace to the stars. Starflight destroys the minds of sane men. But Harker Lee is not sane and his mind has strength which sane men lack. In Harker Lee, the man whom society is caging for his crimes, now lies the hope that man might break out of the greatest of all cages: the void of empty darkness which enfolds the Earth. In this chilling, enthralling novel of psychology and science fiction, one final escape must be made, for a man and for mankind.

Into the house. Down the stairs. Through the dripping dark of the cellar. Someone is there. Someone that shouldn't be there. As a building awaits demolition, a horrifying discovery is made inside the basement: a cage made of human bones - with a terrified, feral child lurking within. Unbeknownst to DI Phil Brennan and psychologist Marina Esposito, they have disturbed a killer who has been operating undetected for thirty years. A killer who wants that boy back. But the cage of bones is also a box of secrets - secrets linking Brennan to the madman in their midst. With the death toll rising and the city reeling in terror, Brennan and Marina race to expose a predator more soullessly evil than any they've ever faced - one who is hiding in plain sight.
