Excerpt from In Castle and Colony There were no women for the little Agneta to watch, for these all walked behind. The tiny, child mourner, led by the tall, dark-eyed cavalier, appeared at the head of this division of the pro cession, and close behind her came the stately lady who wore her linen robes in queenly style, and needed no care from the gentleman appointed as her escort. Other women followed, also clad in the Spotless linen robes of mourning, and behind these more immediate relatives came a goodly line of women friends, testifying their sympathy and respect by' their presence at the funeral rites. The pro cession was further augmented by many coaches, some grand and gay, as befitted the wealthy, some old and dilapidated like the fortunes of their owners. Excerpt from From Kingdom to Colony On this May day, in Warwick, far from all scenes of war or rumors from court, Bromwich Castle, the home of Sir Walter Devereux, Baronet cousin and present heir of the King's unmarried Lieutenant General - lifted its turrets, about whose clinging ivy the late afternoon sunshine played golden and warm. Excerpt from Old Cape Colony: A Chronicle of Her Men and Houses From 1652 to 1806 This is not a history. It is the outcome of work begun entirely for my own pleasure, wherein I collected all the things about the Colony which interested me personally. These were, the history of the oldest farms, and the earliest settlers, Governors, and Company's men who assisted in naming the country, in drawing up its first laws, and in building its gabled houses. Some of the material- was incorporated in a Christmas number of the Cape Times of 1898, which I undertook for Mr. Edmund Garrett, then editor. Some of the drawings have been reproduced in a picture book published by Messrs. Batsford, of High Holborn. Some portions of the present book appeared as articles in Country Life, and are reproduced by kind permission. Calamity falls on houses as well as on people. I learn that to several buildings has come, since I drew them, that worst of fates, "modem improvement." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Leixlip Castle: A Romance of the Penal Days of 1690 When the princely o'neill, terminating the long stern contest which, in defence of faith and fatherland, and to guard the ancient honours of his high Milesian line, he had so gallantly waged against the best military power of Britain, and had furled the banner that for a thousand years had waved triumphant over Dane and Norman, and sheathed the sword that had followed the equally glorious o'donnell and O'sullivan to the same sunny clime, from whence, in the beginning, their enterprising forefathers had migrated in quest of their land of promise. Excerpt from Dr. Andrew Turnbull: And the New Smyrna Colony of Florida Every old inhabitant of Florida knows of Andrew Turnbull. Most tourists on the East Coast have read Susan Turnbull, that romantic and imaginary version of his Minorcan colony, by Archibald Clavering Gunter, and have taken pictures of the old Sugar Mill and "Turnbull's Castle" at New Smyrna. If an old resident is asked about him, he says "Turnbull was a bad sort," - in fact Gunter makes a kind of wicked ogre out of him; so that about the great coquina ruins, cleft with palm trees, hovers a sinister mist of traditions. Reminders of Turnbull are plentiful throughout the State. On the palm covered banks of the North Indian River stands New Smyrna itself, named for Smyrna, Asia Minor, the birthplace of Turnbull's wife. Excerpt from Our Struggle for the Fourteenth Colony, Vol. 2: Canada and the American Revolution Zion had walls; and here a line of Old batteries and fresh-looking palisades crested the precipice. To the left of the Castle, the rising clifl' mounted to its climax in a rounded pinnacle of dark slate, studded with sparkling quartz crystals, known as Cape Diamond, from which the rigging of the ships looked like spider's web; and here stood a small square fort, called the citadel, joined by a sloping curtain to a very high cavalier. A fortified wind mill surmounted the cavalier; while on the summit Of the cape hung a sort of iron cage, in which the bodies of strangled felons had formerly been left for the-winds, the rains, and the birds. Below, on a shelf some fifty or sixty feet from the top, stood a blockhouse and beyond almost wholly ought of sight - were hints of walls, towers, and bastions on the farther Side of the town. Irish Classics written by Declan Kiberd and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Literary Criticism categories.

A celebration of the tenacious life of the enduring Irish classics, this book by one of Irish writing's most eloquent readers offers a brilliant and accessible survey of the greatest works since 1600 in Gaelic and English, which together have shaped one of the world's most original literary cultures. In the course of his discussion of the great seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Gaelic poems of dispossession, and of later work in that language that refuses to die, Declan Kiberd provides vivid and idiomatic translations that bring the Irish texts alive for the English-speaking reader. Extending from the Irish poets who confronted modernity as a cataclysm, and who responded by using traditional forms in novel and radical ways, to the great modern practitioners of such paradoxically conservative and revolutionary writing, Kiberd's work embraces three sorts of Irish classics: those of awesome beauty and internal rigor, such as works by the Gaelic bards, Yeats, Synge, Beckett, and Joyce; those that generate a myth so powerful as to obscure the individual writer and unleash an almost superhuman force, such as the Cuchulain story, the lament for Art O'Laoghaire, and even Dracula; and those whose power exerts a palpable influence on the course of human action, such as Swift's Drapier's Letters, the speeches of Edmund Burke, or the autobiography of Wolfe Tone. The book closes with a moving and daring coda on the Anglo-Irish agreement, claiming that the seeds of such a settlement were sown in the works of Irish literature. A delight to read throughout, Irish Classics is a fitting tribute to the works it reads so well and inspires us to read, and read again.
