The fifties saw schools as purveyors of international Communism; the sixties attacked the public educational system as racist, mindless, and irrelevant; and the Bicentennial era calls the schools down for their failure to teach students fundamental academic skills. Professor Arthur Newman's book of readings reflects an idea clearly regarded as heretical in many circles--the idea that the American public school is not nearly so inadequate as many present-day critics insist. In order to aid the teacher-to-be, the educator, and the concerned citizen in evaluating the validity of such reproval, Newman has included a wide variety of material, both classic and recent, under the following heads: *The Charge to the Public Schools *The Always-Abundant Criticism *The Schools' Record in Academic Achievement *The Treatment of Minority Group Youngsters *Are the Schools Inflexible? *Public School Teachers *Public Schools and Social Ills *A Critique of the Critics Anyone disturbed about the state of American public education will appreciate Newman's celebration of the myriad strengths of our schools and will esteem the intelligent and responsible perspective he sets forth to evaluate today's criticism of U.S. schools.

As a tutor, and as a certified math and science teacher, complaints similar in nature, came up time and time again regarding our secondary schools and their inability to excite our young. More importantly, these complaints seem to match the experiences of the author himself in reflecting back on the middle and high school years. This book brings merit to the feelings of our young and makes some suggestions for fresh change. While light and somtimes in jest, the book points out real deficiencies in the secondary school experience and takes on the noble task of defending the American teen. Our young are the brightest and kindest in the world and should be labeled as such.

Enough. Private interests, politicians, reformers, and pundits have had their chance, and enough is enough. Teachers have been pushed around and pushed to the edge, and the time for tolerating the failed system of our public education policies is over. It's time to drag the standardized testing commercial complex out of our schools, kicking and screaming if need be, and take back our schools for our kids. The revolution has already begun. We must understand the etiology of the American public school's seeming inability to meaningfully and holistically teach every child if we are to have any hope of changing that school for the better. We must wrestle with the philosophical, sociological, and psychological roots of our misperception and mistreatment of children in order to change the way we understand our students. We must also understand the history of "reform" in American education in order to avoid repeating failed experiments. Once we do this, we can dismantle the traditional structures of the American Public School deliberately and thoughtfully, and capitalize upon the intense zeitgeist of the movement against corporatized standardized multiple choice testing, in order to truly revolutionize our schools. Over five sequential sections, "Insurrection" addresses educational philosophy, the system of schools, the social issue of misunderstanding children, replacement structures for those that are incompatible with understandings corrected in the first three sections, and a possible manner in which current school employees can lend their efforts to the revolution called for by Sir Ken Robinson in his 2010 TED Talk, which served as the impetus for the work.

"We are in the midst of a full-scale attack on our nation's commitment to public education. From funding, to vouchers, to charter schools, public education policy has become a political football, rather than a means of fulfilling the most basic obligation of government to its citizens. As Derek W. Black vividly illustrates, this assault threatens not just public education, but democracy itself. Black offers both an illuminating history of our nation's establishment of a constitutional right to education, and a trenchant analysis of how such a right is being undermined today. He looks at education history with a wide view, describing both periods when our democracy has been strengthened-when the commitment to public education has been strongest-and weakened, when such a commitment has been lacking. And today, such a commitment is sorely lacking. Schoolhouse Burning shows what is at stake: not just the right to public education as guaranteed by the constitution, but an erosion of democratic norms"--

American Public School Librarianship written by Wayne A. Wiegand and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-12 with Education categories.

The first comprehensive history of American public school librarianship. "Can I get a library pass?" Over the past 120 years, millions of American K–12 public school students have asked that question. Still, we know little about the history of public school libraries, which over the decades were pulled together and managed by hundreds of thousands of school librarians. In American Public School Librarianship, Wayne A. Wiegand recounts the unseen history of both school libraries and their librarians. Why, Wiegand asks, did school librarianship turn out the way it did? And what can its history tell us about limitations and opportunities in the coming decades of the twenty-first century? Addressing issues of race, social class, gender, and sexual orientation (among others) as they affected American public school librarianship throughout its history, Wiegand explores how libraries were transformed by the Great Depression, the civil rights era, Lyndon Johnson's Great Society programs, and more recent legislation like No Child Left Behind, Common Core, and the Every Student Succeeds Act. Wiegand touches on censorship, the impact of school segregation on school libraries, disparities in funding that fall along lines of race and class, the development of school librarianship as a profession, the history of organizations like the American Association for School Librarians, and how emerging technologies affected school librarianship. Wiegand clarifies the historical role of the school librarian as an opponent of censorship and defender of intellectual freedom. He also analyzes the politics of a female-dominated school library profession, identifies and evaluates the profession's major players and their battles (often against patriarchy), and challenges the priorities of librarianship's current agendas, particularly regarding the role of "reading" in the everyday lives of children and young adults. Filling a huge void in the history of education, American Public School Librarianship provides essential background information to members of the nation's school library and educational communities who are charged with supervising and managing America's 80,000 public school libraries.
