This volume offers a counterbalance to the dismissal that Orosius’s Histories Against the Pagans has suffered in most recent criticism. Orosius is traditionally considered to be a mediocre scholar and an essentially worthless historian. This book takes his literary endeavour seriously, recognizing the unique contribution the Histories made at a crucial moment of debate and uncertainty, where the present was shaped by restructuring the past. The significance of the Histories is recognised intrinsically rather than only in comparison with other texts and authors, principally Augustine of Hippo, Orosius's mentor. The approach of the book is historiographical, exploring the form, purpose, and meaning of the Histories. The themes of divine providence, monotheism, and imperial authority are examined, and the subjects of war and the sack of Rome receive extended analysis. The book foregrounds Orosius's significant historiographical innovations that are seldom explored, such as the subversion of imperial history within a Christian spectrum in the synchronization of the emperor Augustus and Christ. Each chapter contributes to the progression of knowledge about Orosius’s Histories and the wider literary and historiographical culture of disruption that characterised the late fourth and early fifth centuries CE.

The story of the British Empire is a familiar one: Britain came, it saw, it conquered, forging a glorious world empire upon which the sun never set. In fact, far from being the tale of a single nation imposing its will upon the world, the British Empire found itself reshaped by the tenacious resistance of the powerful Indigenous and non-European people it encountered. From ill-advised ventures in Ireland to the failure to curtail North African Corsair states all the way to the collapse of commercial operations in East Asia, British attempts to create an imperial enterprise often ended in embarrassment and even disaster. In this book, David Veevers looks beyond the myths of triumph and into the realities of British misadventures in the early days of Empire, meeting the extraordinary people across the world who were the real forces to be reckoned with. From the Emperors who determined the expansion of the English East India Company, to the West African kings who resisted English entreaties and set the terms of the lucrative slave trade, to the Paramount Chiefs in America who fought to expunge European forces from their homelands, The Great Defiance retells the story of early Empire from the perspective of the Indigenous and non-European people who held the fate of the British in their hands.

Most studies on Latin America tend to dismiss anarchism as a prelude to populist and socialist movements. This collection illustrates a much more vast, differentiated, and active anarchist presence in the region that evolved on simultaneous-transnational, national, regional, and local-fronts.

Rebellion and Revolution: Defiance in German Language, History and Art is a transnational collection of twelve essays by scholars of history, literature and film. It offers new perspectives on several of the key moments in history when the German revolutionary spirit was at its peak. Inspired by both the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the 40th anniversary of the student movements of 1968, this book contributes to current discourses on resistance by providing a retrospective look at events and time periods ranging from the German Peasants’ War of 1525 to the American War for Independence and the French Revolution in the 18th century; and from the tumultuous period of the Weimar Republic up until the final days of the German Democratic Republic. This book not only provides a new outlook on important historical moments and sociopolitical issues, rather the articles take a multidisciplinary approach to analyze a variety of artistic works inspired by historical rebellious movements. This book provides a variety of theoretical interpretations which will be useful to readers interested in historiography, gender studies, rhetoric, philosophy, film, music and literature.

In Defiance of Oppression - The Legacy of Boudica is an anthology that encapsulates the Spirit of the defiant warrior in a modern apathetic age. No longer will the voices of our sisters go unheard, as the ancient Goddesses return to the battlements, calling to ignite the spark within each and every one of us-to defy oppression wherever we find it, and stand together in solidarity. In Defiance holds the voices of women from across the globe who answered Boudiccas' War Cry, each with their own unique experience and expression. Delve into the pages and remember the spirit of defiance within you. We are still here, we are standing with you, and we shall never, ever, give up. ''This searing anthology combines poetry, prose, historical allegory and political manifesto. Encouraging, inspiring and sometimes jarring, it is a call to arms for women everywhere. This is a collection of works from different perspectives and life paths, woven together into a piece of material that will warm you up in places and deeply challenge you in others.'' -Kelly-Ann Maddox, Author of Rebel Witch: Carve the Craft That's Yours Alone
