How do visual images from the ancient world shed light on New Testament texts? In a methodologically multifaceted manner, the contributions in this volume examine early Christian images with regard to their ancient context. Various New Testament texts (the synoptic gospels, the Johannine and Pauline corpora) are linked to ancient visual images. Various approaches in iconography are summarized and applied to the interpretation of texts, taking account of the strengths and limitations of these images, as well as possible future applications. These essays incorporate current viewpoints from archaeology and the history of art. The topics range from studies of the depictions of Christ and the disciples to the images of humans and the world. This volume provides an innovative basis for the discussion of the iconographic method and the New Testament.

Gewalt und die Eskalation von Gewalt werden oft von Emotionalisierung und Leidenschaft begleitet. Gewalt wird durch Emotionen vorbereitet, vorangetrieben und inszeniert und erweckt ihrerseits Emotionen, die zu Kontrollverlust und im Fall von kollektiv verübter Gewalt zu einer Intensivierung des Gemeinschaftsgefühls führen können. In literarischen und historiographischen Darstellungen von kollektiver Gewalt wird der Faktor "Emotion" je nach Kontext unterschiedlich eingesetzt, um Gewalt zu rechtfertigen, zu plausibilisieren, zu verurteilen oder aber nachvollzieh- und genießbar zu machen. Dies gilt für aktuelle ebenso wie für "vormoderne" Darstellungen. Der Frage, ob es doch epochentypische Zugänge zur emotionalen Seite der Gewalt gibt, gehen die hier versammelten Beiträge u.a. von Mitgliedern der Gießener Forschergruppe Gewaltgemeinschaften nach. " KARL JASPERS Since the publication of KARL JASPERS' General Psychopathology in 1913 at least, it has become obvious that a psychopathologist cannot do without philosophical reflection. If he wants to say anything about disorders of perception and thought, or of the experiencing I, to name the subjects of this book, he must know those disorders and the problems related to them. The phenomena and problems in question are not at all simply empirical (which is to say that they concern the structure and function of the organs of sense or the central nervous system), but conceptual. We have already formed some notions and prejudices concerning those subjects - perception, e. g. , is considered to be "a projection from the outside into the inward", thinking "a kind of inward talk", the I refers to "reflec ting upon me by myself', etc. Unless we think about these ideas critically, we shall fail in describing disorders of experience, thought, and action.
