Greed As Idolatry written by Brian S. Rosner and has been published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-08-28 with Psychology categories.

What are the origin and meaning of the words "greed is idolatry" found in Ephesians 5:5 and Colossians 3:5? In what sense are the greedy guilty of idolatry? Many different answers have been given to this question throughout the history of interpretation. In fact, a consensus exists on only one score -- that the expression serves to vilify greed. Brian Rosner ably takes on the challenge of interpretation by tackling the phrase as a metaphor, structuring his argument around an intriguing comparison to mountain climbing. From this vantage point, he offers a thorough history of interpretation of the phrase, including a study of the origin of the concept of idolatrous greed in biblical and Jewish sources. Rosner concludes that the comparison of greed with idolatry teaches that to desire to acquire and keep for oneself more money and material things is an attack on God's exclusive right to human love, trust, and obedience. With this work comes a stunning, fresh understanding of familiar terms -- "greed," "idolatry," and even "God" -- challenging both the church as a whole and individual believers to consider the far-ranging implications of our materialistic world. The first full-length study of this intriguing Pauline expression, Greed as Idolatry has profound implications for theological ethics today.

For all of the technical explanations for meltdown in the financial markets during the banking crisis, the most readily accepted and almost universal explanation is the single word 'greed'. This is a subject which can at once be seen as the disease at the heart of society and the motivating force behind the progress of mankind.

War And Peace written by Howard Fast and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-16 with Political Science categories.

In more than 100 essays, written over a three-year period for the "New York Observer", Howard Fast looks with horror at the official violence inflicted on Nicaragua, El Salvador, Grenada, Panama and Iraq and the unofficial violence that is taking place in the cities of the United States. In "War and Peace", Fast summons us to face the wars and the social disintegration that degraded the Reagan and Bush years, with all the explanations and excuses stripped away. He dwells on the monumental folly of the Cold War and shows us repeatedly what we could have done with the billions spent on planes, bombs and guns if we had spent them on the education and safety of our children, on housing, medical care, rebuilding the cities - and what we can still do in the future. As in Swift, Yahoos populate the essays of this book: the drug dealers; the local political hacks; the anti-Semites; the racists; the women-bashers; the arms traffickers: the whole unsavory cast. As in Mencken, boobs run loose in the White House and in the halls of Congress. From time to time, a Candide-like character named D'emas (Yiddish for the "the truth") appears and asks embarrassing questions about the ways of our civilisation, which his interlocutor is hard-pressed to answer. And yet, after Howard Fast recounts the inanity and brutality of these years, he offers a humane vision of what America and the rest of the world could be. These essays should hold a place in 20th-century letters as a statement of unsurpassed passion on the theme: war and peace.

We rarely have the guts to say it, but this book does! It eclipses, principally, issues and topics that would be beneficial if discussed openly. But sadly, we seldom, if ever, have the gall to do so. It slam dunks you with food for thought -- raw. In all there are over a hundred discussions and expos?s (many with a complementary illustration) that include the following (paraphrased):The Virginia Tech myth about guns;Juveniles delinquents needed for road kill; How to marry a Canadian murderer; Some speeding tickets are Legal Highway Robbery; The genetic code for sexual orientation; The Pantyhose-Diamonds connection;Dump your wife because life is short; The prostitution solicitation mystery;IQ and geography; The FSBO myth;Put dem prosecutors in the slammer; Is Rush a new four letter word? The brain evolution puzzle; When your vote is meaningless; The intelligence behind dumb political ads;The follies of Child Support Court; No place to pee in Brooklyn;Gene mutations in Polygamist Wives;Legal Child Abuse; How to deal with a cop when stopped;Megamart myths; The Daytime Soap ? Talk Radio Connection;A High Wire Jamaican adventure;Mabel?s demise while traveling with a dish of chicken curry; How to be a rock star; and much more. Honest, satirical, humorous, thought provoking, and very candid. Not politically correct. Enjoy!“/div>

Australians in Papua New Guinea provides a history of the late Australian years in Papua New Guinea through the eyes of 13 Australians and four Papua New Guineans by presenting the experiences of Australians who went to work in Papua New Guinea (PNG) over several decades before the 1970s. This extraordinary book balances expatriates with indigenous Papua New Guineans, balances gender, and pioneers an innovative combination of written reminiscences and interviews that reveal the impact of Australian colonial policy on pre-indendence PNG. It follows medical practitioners Michael Alpers, Ken Clezy, Margaret Smith, Ian Maddocks, and Anthony Radford (with accompanying reflections by wife, Robin) who grappled with complex medical issues in difficult surroundings. Other contributors—John Langmore, John Ley, and Bill Brown—became experts in governance. The final group featured was involved in education and social change: Ken Inglis, Bill Gammage, and Christine Stewart. Papua New Guinean contributors: medical expert Sir Isi Henao Kevau, diplomats Charles Lepani and Dame Meg Taylor, and educator and politician Dame Carol Kidu further deepen the insights of this collection. A final reflection is provided by historian Jonathan Ritchie, himself part of an Australian family in PNG. The history of this important Pacific nation unfolds as do the histories of individuals who were involved in its formative decades.

This book is about salvation within unity, and a reminder to all should be our remission for our sins in knowing spiritual guidance must be accepted and maintained for the continual growth for all humans is and will be the balance needed to weed out the greed of destruction. We must maintain obedience to the prosperity of growth, not greed. None are god to another, but we do have heroes who do godly things for others. We are the flesh, living with and in the spirit of borrowed time. If we all say Amen, then God’s will, will be done.

Greedy Business written by Leonard Amattey and has been published by AuthorHouse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-04 with Science categories.

The book GREEDY BUSINESS is a satire directed at human behaviour, particularly in regards to human priorities to choose between acts of humanitarianism and greed. The author notes that politics indeed is part and parcel of life but no where is it so vividly portrayed than in education and at the work place to satisfy human obsession with greed. Then he admitted, I cannot deny my role in that but that cannot justify it. As individuals we allow Greed to Triumph Morality without humanitarian consideration for others in our efforts to improve quality of our life and that is inexcusable. This book is therefore about that aspect of human thinking that can justify individuals doing things to others that they would not like others to do them. I wonder how many of us find the necessity to take a step backward to explore the choices we have made to do the things we have done to others that we would not like to be done to us because if done to us they would likely destroy our quality of life. Yet some how, some of us can justify some of the things we do to others as the result of the choices we have made without humanitarian consideration for them in the name of improving quality of our lives at the expense of our victims. Well! I did take a step backward and my observations suggest that humans obsession with Greed confirms why we do the things to others that we would not like to be done to us. Our tendency to want more and more at the expense of others without humanitarian consideration for the quality of life of others has blinded our moral responsibility to be fair. The purpose of writing this book is therefore to share my observations and thoughts with others in the hope that they too may find the need to take a step backward and explore the choices made in the past to do certain things to others that they would not like others to do to them.

Broken Trust written by Samuel P. King and has been published by University of Hawaii Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-01-01 with History categories.

Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop was the largest landowner and richest woman in the Hawaiian kingdom. Upon her death in 1884, she entrusted her property--"known as Bishop Estate--"to five trustees in order to create and maintain an institution that would benefit the children of Hawai'i: Kamehameha Schools. A century later, Bishop Estate controlled nearly one out of every nine acres in the state, a concentration of private land ownership rarely seen anywhere in the world. Then in August 1997 the unthinkable happened: Four revered kupuna (native Hawaiian elders) and a professor of trust-law publicly charged Bishop Estate trustees with gross incompetence and massive trust abuse. Entitled "Broken Trust," the statement provided devastating details of rigged appointments, violated trusts, cynical manipulation of the trust's beneficiaries, and the shameful involvement of many of Hawai'i's powerful. No one is better qualified to examine the events and personalities surrounding the scandal than two of the original "Broken Trust" authors.Their comprehensive account together with historical background, brings to light information that has never before been made public, including accounts of secret meetings and communications involving Supreme Court justices.
