Sergej Lavrov, Ministro degli Affari Esteri della Federazione Russa, alla 7a Conferenza sulla Sicurezza Internazionale di Mosca, il 4 aprile 2018, ha dichiarato: “Si ha la netta sensazione che gli Stati Uniti stiano cercando di mantenere in questo immenso spazio geopolitico [il Medio Oriente] un caos controllato, con la speranza di poterlo utilizzare per giustifi care la propria presenza militare nella regione per un tempo illimitato e per dettarvi la propria agenda.” L’idea di fondo è semplice: sostituire agli stati ereditati dal crollo dell’Impero ottomano delle entità più piccole a carattere monoetnico e neutralizzare questi ministati elaborandoli in modo permanente gli uni contro gli altri. In altri termini, si tratta di ritornare al patto condiviso segretamente, nel 1916, dall’Impero francese e quello britannico, detto accordo di Sykes-Picot e di consacrare il dominio e la sovranità totale degli anglosassoni sulla regione. Ma per defi nire nuovi Stati, ancora inesistenti, bisogna distruggere quelli che esistono. Questo libro intende illustrare i progetti che si sono succeduti, fi no ai giorni nostri, per rendere operativo questo disegno politico nel quadrante mediorientale.

Se le rivolte arabe hanno costituito un momento fondamentale, non deve però essere dimenticato che la complessità e la ricchezza del tema cittadinanza impongono approcci teorici e analisi capaci di mettere ugualmente in luce come altri fattori contribuiscano a definirne il concetto. Soffermarsi sulla dimensione storica consente, ad esempio, di inquadrare con maggiore precisione i contorni di una questione con cui il mondo islamico si è confrontato sin dalle origini, ma devono anche essere considerate le trasformazioni legate al processo di globalizzazione e, in modo particolare, alla mobilità umana che chiama in causa il concetto di diritti umani, cittadinanza e partecipazione politica, non solo delle persone che si mettono in movimento, ma anche delle realtà che vengono attraversate.

This book examines how left-wing political and cultural movements in Western Europe have considered Jews in the last two hundred years. The chapters seek to answer the following question: has there been a specific way in which the Left has considered Jewish minorities? The subject has taken various shapes in the different geographical contexts, influenced by national specificities. In tandem, this volume demonstrates the extent to which left-wing movements share common trends drawn from a collective repertoire of representations and meanings. Highlighting the different aspects of the subject matter, the chapters in this book are divided in three parts, each dedicated to a major theme: the contribution of the theorists of Socialism to the Jewish Question; Antisemitism and its representations in left-wing culture; and the perception of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Taken together, these three themes allow for a multidisciplinary analysis of the relationship between the Left and Jews from the second half of the nineteenth century to recent times.

Just like people around the world have done for generations, Arab people from the Middle East and North African (MENA) region have immigrated to various nations around the world. A number of ‘push’ factors account for why groups have left their homeland and ‘pulled’ to another nation to settle. The history and patterns of Arab migration out of the MENA illustrates the wide array of reasons for these patterns, primarily illustrating that mass emigration and settlement are highly linked to a number of factors, including social, political, economic, familial climates of each nation-state and its policies. If it is one takeaway that this edited volume brings to light, it is that the Arab MENA does not only include a diverse population within each nation-state it also illustrates the ways in which their settlement in new nations have contributed to their own identity development patterns, their communities, and that of their new nation-state. This book celebrates the achievements and acknowledges the challenges of the new communities that Arabs have built around the world. It shows examples of societies that have embraced the Arab diaspora as well as examples of sidelining these communities. These examples come from a number of subject areas, from music to international affairs. The examples are both contemporary and historical, authored by individuals with a diverse set of disciplinary lenses and professional training. This book is meant to fill a gap in the literature as it expands on the understanding of Arab communities to inform and inspire a more nuanced, inclusive approach to the study of the Arab diaspora. It does so by revealing untold stories that challenge stereotypes to push for more inclusive media representation of Arab identity and its development in various regions of the world.
