Horses is an A-Z companion to perhaps the most loved of all domesticated animals. The book's entries include a wealth of unexpected, fascinating and serendipitous information, from horse-slang phrases to horses in British pub signs, and from the horse in advertising to the horse as a food item. Themes such as the horse in warfare and the horse in folklore abound. These features add up to a richly satisfying accumulation of information about the horse's role in human culture and society over two millennia. Horses will not only be a helpful reference source and congenial bedside book for those who work with or enjoy horses, but also a satisfying and browsable companion for the inquisitive general reader.

Excerpt from Famous Horses: With Portraits, Pedigrees, Principal Performances, Descriptions of Races, and Various Interesting Items Extending Over a Period of Nearly Two Centuries As regards many of the earlier animals, little more than the names and pedigrees are known; but it is necessary to mention them in order to make other pedigrees complete. With a view to avoid repetition in the body of the work, and to facilitate the tracing of pedigrees, a comprehensive index is added. Genealogical tables will also be found, showing the principal descendants, in the male line, of the Darley Arabian, the Byerley Turk, and the Godolphin Barb, together with a full pedigree of Eclipse. With the idea of making the descriptive notes more interesting to the modern generation, the quaint and characteristic wording of the past has, where possible, been preserved. A unique look at horses and theme parks... Can one show barn coexist with the world's most famous theme park resort? Grace, long-time owner of Seabreeze Equestrian Center, sure hopes so. She and her staff have been working every angle in the books for the past few years, as their country neighborhood succumbs to vacation-land sprawl. A shot at making a few extra bucks by renting stalls to a trainer specializing in parade horses becomes a new obsession for Grace’s assistant trainer, Kennedy -- and a shot in the arm for Grace, who finds herself charmed by the local theme park’s equine manager, Mark. Not ready to cede the area’s equestrian experiences to the theme parks, she begins to think she can beat them at their own game. Which, unfortunately, won’t be easy to explain to Mark. Trying to balance a barn full of boarders, aggressive new neighbors, a troublesome staff and a relationship with a man whose business model is in her crosshairs isn’t easy. Grace has been in the horse business a long time... but it's never looked like this before! Praise for Horses in Wonderland "This is a fun read, a peek behind the curtain of a real-life entertainment juggernaut which shall not be named, but you can certainly guess." "LOVED this book! I really loved the first one too but this one was just as great a read and even made me more curious about Disney and those famous horses they have in their parades!" "As always, a brilliant story, well written and absorbing. This didn't head in the direction I was expecting, but was even better than I hoped it would be!"

The Grand National written by Anne Holland and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-10-24 with Sports & Recreation categories.

Every year the Grand National produces very different stories from jockeys and horses alike; uplifting scenes from a victor and heartbreak when a mere inch divides the loser from the winner at the end of nearly four-and-a-half miles and thirty challenging fences. In 1839 the first winner was aptly named Lottery. Back then, huge crowds rode to Aintree by horseback, in carriages, carts or on foot. Today the Grand National is probably the world's most famous horse race, with a global television audience of some 600 million in 140 countries. This richly informed book focuses on the race's various record-breakers, rather than being a purely chronological history of this greatest of all steeplechases. Many records have stood the test of time: in 2019, Tiger Roll's second consecutive victory was the first time that the feat had been achieved since Red Rum in 1973-74. Anne Holland's authoritative history celebrates one of the world's greatest sporting spectacles. 'A well-organised and cheerily anecdotal volume' Spectator
