An American tourist/investor while on holiday sees an opportunity of a viable investment on an island. He tackles the scheme with such clandestine approaches and haste that he fails to learn all facets of the land and its peculiarities. The American investor's dream to comprehensively own a mountain with an abundant source of spring water is frustrated initially by one owner who is not a resident of the mountain. The American Jim Gallegos is convinced that he can negotiate directly with the other farmer residents who together occupy the larger acreage and whose lives are seen as an existence close to subsistence level. He is cautioned about the likelihood of restrictive measures by the Government's Tourism and Physical Planning departments and also legal bottlenecks in settling with the farmers. This does not deter him from embarking on an incident riddled exploratory one day trip to the mountain top which resulted in the death of his guide, a broken leg injury to his wife and his near fatal mishap which left him marooned from the rest in a primal environment. They went missing for a thirty-six to forty-eight hour period before they were found. The island authorities rushed to format a separate search party on each of three days to rescue the stranded and traumatized American couple at different locations. The local confidence men, savvy enough to see beneath the covertness, were intent on building an enterprise around the American investor in anticipation of the spinoffs from his disguised prospective venture. This set off an internecine war between local factions, namely, a consulting accountant, a taxi driver/helper and a disco bar owner. Plans along grand dinners and socially impacting weddings were being organized to woo the American couple hoping to engender favoritism. . However all plans and stratagems were rescinded by the American investor as a result of the calamitous events on the mountain. He sought a catharsis through reverential attachment to the natural environment and became a recluse. The local residents were drawn into the drama of the stranded American couple when a murder suspect was fatally shot during one of the searches and the unanticipated death of the local guide, both familiar characters on the island. These incidents attracted speculation that there was involvement of the occult and some were convinced many of the issues surrounding the missing couple were resolved by prayer and divine intervention.

Running into Water is not just another woman's book; it's an articulate and compelling call to women and mothers from every dialect of life for renewed purpose and hope. We all desperately need water to sustain our physical lives, just as we need God to sustain our spiritual lives. The idea of women immersed in God transformed through the practice of motherhood, is as much as for who women will be as it is for who the next generation will become. This endeavor demands that mothers not only be heartfelt women, but intellectual ones, engaging the world around them. Women in pursuit of God live lives that are anything but commonplace; their mothering becomes anything but ordinary. To be a woman, mother, and learner of Christ, applying his freedom and teaching to life is much more than good morality or a safe, dull existence; it is a profound resurrection to life as its meant to be. Angela Blycker invites you to join her on this personal, global, thoughtful, and applicable journey in Running into Water as she explores and interweaves the beliefs and questions about pursuing God, gives evidence of practical implications of this in the lives of women internationally through the bold application of spiritual truths, and presents insightful vision for intentional motherhood. Despite the continued struggles of women and children, Running into Water shows that their pursuit of God is as powerful as a mighty rushing river, winding in every direction, breaking up dry ground in different ways and in various times, but always with the intent to deliver life now and in the coming generations.

The classic cookbook from “the first lady of Southern cooking” (NPR), featuring a new foreword by the James Beard Award–winning chef Mashama Bailey Decades before cornbread, shrimp and grits, and peach cobbler were mainstays on menus everywhere, Edna Lewis was pioneering the celebration of seasonal food as a distinctly American cuisine. In this James Beard Foundation Cookbook Hall of Fame-inducted cookbook, Miss Lewis (as she was almost universally known) shares the recipes of her childhood, spent in a Virginia farming community founded by her grandfather and his friends after emancipation, as well as those that made her one of the most revered American chefs of all time. Interspersed throughout are personal anecdotes, cooking insights, notes on important Southern ingredients, and personally developed techniques for maximizing flavor. Across six charmingly illustrated chapters—From the Gardens and Orchards; From the Farmyard; From the Lakes, Steams, and Oceans; For the Cupboard; From the Bread Oven and Griddle; and The Taste of Old-fashioned Desserts—encompassing almost 200 recipes, Miss Lewis captures the spirit of the South. From Whipped Cornmeal with Okra; Pan-Braised Spareribs; and Benne Seed Biscuits to Thirteen-Bean Soup; Pumpkin with Sautéed Onions and Herbs; a Salad of Whole Tomatoes Garnished with Green Beans and Scallions; and Raspberry Pie Garnished with Whipped Cream, In Pursuit of Flavor is a modern classic and a timeless compendium of Southern cooking at its very best.

The brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) has captured the fascination of anglers for centuries, and some flyfishers devote lifetimes in pursuit of wild or native trophies. Yet 90 percent never catch a brook trout over 14 inches. Why? Simple: the average angler doesn’t know how to find them and rarely employs the specialized tactics required for hooking a large brook trout. Which is why well-known author of New England flyfishing, Lou Zambello, has written this new book, In Pursuit of Trophy Brook Trout: Techniques, Timing, and Territories. Zambello has fished for and guided anglers after wild trophy brook trout for decades. He has spent years deciphering seasonal migration patterns, aquatic life cycles, and weather events impacting brookie behavior. He’s tested different flies and tactics, both on the surface and down deep. This book explains where big brookies can be found, when they are catchable, how to fool them, and how to land them, all while recounting illuminating trophy trout experiences. The beauty of a male trophy brook trout in spawning colors rivals any of nature’s canvases – broad greenish flanks decorated with blue halos and the deep orange or burgundy of its underside highlighted by white-tipped fins that looked like an underwater baker had dipped them in vanilla frosting. Landing a wild or native brook trout that measure in pounds instead of inches should be at the top of everyone’s bucket list. Read and reread this insightful new book and become one of the lucky few who can boast of landing a trophy wild brook trout.

An "elegant and eloquent" (New York Times) exploration of the frontiers of noise and silence, and the growing war between them. Between iPods, music-blasting restaurants, earsplitting sports stadiums, and endless air and road traffic, the place for quiet in our lives grows smaller by the day. In Pursuit of Silence gives context to our increasingly desperate sense that noise pollution is, in a very real way, an environmental catastrophe. Traveling across the country and meeting and listening to a host of incredible characters, including doctors, neuroscientists, acoustical engineers, monks, activists, educators, marketers, and aggrieved citizens, George Prochnik examines why we began to be so loud as a society, and what it is that gets lost when we can no longer find quiet.
