Jerry Williams' history of Azorean immigration to the United States offers us valuable insight into the experience and culture of Portuguese immigrants and their descendents. This account fills a major gap in American immigration history and gives us a comprehensive overview of how Portuguese-Americans--now numbering close to a million people--have come to constitute a vibrant and highly visible presence within southeastern New England, the areas around San Francisco and San Diego, Hawaii, and the New Jersey/New York metropolitan area. Even though Azorean immigrants all came from similar cultural and social backgrounds, Williams shows how regionally specific opportunity structures and social hierarchies have contributed to significant differences within the Portuguese-American experience. Starting with the whaling routes that first connected the mid-Atlantic archipelago with the ports of call in New England and California in the early 1800s, Williams lays out the complex relationship between the Azores and the US that has continued into the present. It tells of three attempts to create an ideal community on the river bottom lands at Davis Bend south of Vicksburg. There Joseph Davis's effort to establish a cooperative community among the slaves on his plantation was doomed to fail as long as they remained in bondage. During the Civil War the Yankees tried with limited success to organize the freedmen into a model community without trusting them to manage their own affairs. After the war the intrepid Benjamin Montgomery and his family bought the land from Davis and established a very prosperous colony of their fellow freedmen. Their success at Davis Bend occurred when blacks were accorded the opportunity to pursue the American dream relatively free from the discrimination that prevailed in most of society. While I was on a hiatus from pursuing the dream, I felt that a major part of my life was missing because I did not fulfill the dream. Henceforth, I eventually restarted to follow the big American dream that I once had, but this time with enormous hope and stronger faith. I endured several predicaments and obstacles during my efforts to taste the American dream. But with faith, my belief in America's exceptionalism, perseverance, hard work, diligence, efforts, prayers, and self determination, I eventually succeeded even after I failed several times in those endeavors because of hope, faith, and the mind set that I have to make it regardless of what the obstacles could be. I made it through although it is only the beginning of the attainment of my dream. The theme of the story is to convince readers that faith, perseverance, efforts, determination and dedication and passion were the key constituents to my success of attaining the American dream and it is therefore possible for anyone to achieve any dream as long as they are willing to use and apply faith, hope, diligence, hard work, efforts, and perseverance.
