Jerry Williams' history of Azorean immigration to the United States offers us valuable insight into the experience and culture of Portuguese immigrants and their descendents. This account fills a major gap in American immigration history and gives us a comprehensive overview of how Portuguese-Americans--now numbering close to a million people--have come to constitute a vibrant and highly visible presence within southeastern New England, the areas around San Francisco and San Diego, Hawaii, and the New Jersey/New York metropolitan area. Even though Azorean immigrants all came from similar cultural and social backgrounds, Williams shows how regionally specific opportunity structures and social hierarchies have contributed to significant differences within the Portuguese-American experience. Starting with the whaling routes that first connected the mid-Atlantic archipelago with the ports of call in New England and California in the early 1800s, Williams lays out the complex relationship between the Azores and the US that has continued into the present. We learn how particular patterns of poverty, overpopulation and social inequality in the Azores pushed large numbers of the islands' inhabitants to leave their homes in search of better opportunities for themselves and their children. He tells the story of how the early whalers who jumped ship in New Bedford, San Francisco, or Hawaii were followed by kin and fellow villagers who had heard of plentiful jobs in New England's textile mills, gold and land in California, or agricultural work on Hawaiian plantations. Williams' account allows us to understand the importance of family and community connections throughout the immigrants' arduous transition from peasant life to industrial society.

The Pursuit Of A Dream written by Janet Sharp Hermann and has been published by Univ. Press of Mississippi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-03-10 with History categories.

This fascinating history set in the Reconstruction South is a testament to African-American resilience, fortitude, and independence. It tells of three attempts to create an ideal community on the river bottom lands at Davis Bend south of Vicksburg. There Joseph Davis's effort to establish a cooperative community among the slaves on his plantation was doomed to fail as long as they remained in bondage. During the Civil War the Yankees tried with limited success to organize the freedmen into a model community without trusting them to manage their own affairs. After the war the intrepid Benjamin Montgomery and his family bought the land from Davis and established a very prosperous colony of their fellow freedmen. Their success at Davis Bend occurred when blacks were accorded the opportunity to pursue the American dream relatively free from the discrimination that prevailed in most of society. It is a story worthy of celebration. Janet Hermann writes here of two men--Joseph Davis, the slaveholder and brother of the president of the Confederacy, and Benjamin Montgomery, an educated freedman. In 1866 Montgomery began the experiment at Davis Bend. The Pursuit of a Dream, published in 1981, received the Robert F. Kennedy Award, the McLemore Prize of the Mississippi Historical Society, and the Silver Medal of the Commonwealth Club of California. Historical writing at its best . . . her research is impressive and is presented in balanced, ironic prose. --David Bradley, New York Times Book Review. A marvelous story for all readers with a taste for the ironies, the ambiguities, and the surprises of history. --C. Vann Woodward. Janet Sharp Hermann, a freelance writer and historian, is the author of Joseph E. Davis: Pioneer Patriarch (University Press of Mississippi).

This book is all about proving that no dream is impossible to achieve, I grew up being told that all my dreams were impossible and it led to me believing that life wasn't worth living. That belief coupled with depressing circumstances led me to nearly commit suicide. Encouraged by a friend to take another look at my life I decided to discover for myself whether our dreams truly are impossible or if the “impossible” is just a lie. I was pleasantly surprised when I found that some of history's greatest, most influential and successful people had already proven all of our dreams to be possible and how to achieve them. This book is a collection of guiding insights and meditations I have collected and created over years whilst pursuing my own dreams. It offers the guidance of people such as John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Thomas Jefferson and many more. You might be able to argue that I don't know what it takes to succeed and achieve dreams but you can't really argue with some of history's greatest and most inspirational people. These are people who followed their dreams and some of these people have managed to change the world. This book is intended not only to prove to you that all of our dreams are possible but show you how to achieve them and to keep you motivated. Lack of motivation is one of the largest reasons we do not achieve the things we desire. Consider this your kick in the pants!

This book is a story about my life which is based on the dreams of being great and successful as a young boy who afterwards came to the United States of America to pursue my dream. Upon reaching the land of the United Stated of America, the perspective of the dream was therefore changed to the American dream and I started following the American dream and halted from pursuing it for a few years to say the least. While I was on a hiatus from pursuing the dream, I felt that a major part of my life was missing because I did not fulfill the dream. Henceforth, I eventually restarted to follow the big American dream that I once had, but this time with enormous hope and stronger faith. I endured several predicaments and obstacles during my efforts to taste the American dream. But with faith, my belief in America's exceptionalism, perseverance, hard work, diligence, efforts, prayers, and self determination, I eventually succeeded even after I failed several times in those endeavors because of hope, faith, and the mind set that I have to make it regardless of what the obstacles could be. I made it through although it is only the beginning of the attainment of my dream. The theme of the story is to convince readers that faith, perseverance, efforts, determination and dedication and passion were the key constituents to my success of attaining the American dream and it is therefore possible for anyone to achieve any dream as long as they are willing to use and apply faith, hope, diligence, hard work, efforts, and perseverance.

Ever been offered a promotion that seems too good to be true? The kind where you snap their arm off to accept, then wonder why all your long-serving colleagues look secretly relieved, as if they're off some strange and unpleasant hook? It's the kind of trick that deeply sinister companies like J.W. Wells & Co. pull all the time. Especially with employees who are too busy mooning over the office intern to think about what they're getting into. And it's why, right about now, Paul Carpenter is wishing he'd paid much less attention to the gorgeous Melze, and rather more to a little bit of job description small-print referring to "pest" control.

Bait And Switch written by Barbara Ehrenreich and has been published by Metropolitan Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-07-25 with Political Science categories.

The bestselling author of Nickel and Dimed goes back undercover to do for America's ailing middle class what she did for the working poor Barbara Ehrenreich's Nickel and Dimed explored the lives of low-wage workers. Now, in Bait and Switch, she enters another hidden realm of the economy: the shadowy world of the white-collar unemployed. Armed with a plausible résumé of a professional "in transition," she attempts to land a middle-class job—undergoing career coaching and personality testing, then trawling a series of EST-like boot camps, job fairs, networking events, and evangelical job-search ministries. She gets an image makeover, works to project a winning attitude, yet is proselytized, scammed, lectured, and—again and again—rejected. Bait and Switch highlights the people who've done everything right—gotten college degrees, developed marketable skills, and built up impressive résumés—yet have become repeatedly vulnerable to financial disaster, and not simply due to the vagaries of the business cycle. Today's ultra-lean corporations take pride in shedding their "surplus" employees—plunging them, for months or years at a stretch, into the twilight zone of white-collar unemployment, where job searching becomes a full-time job in itself. As Ehrenreich discovers, there are few social supports for these newly disposable workers—and little security even for those who have jobs. Like the now classic Nickel and Dimed, Bait and Switch is alternately hilarious and tragic, a searing exposé of economic cruelty where we least expect it.
