Brown is a renowned philanthropist who runs an illicit drug and human trafficking organization with his notorious team of top security personnel, all of whom work within the government at various levels, both state and federal. Every wrong road leads to a wrong destination. Lucas was among those who Brown lured to Russia for a better life, and Lucas has made a promise to a woman in Nigeria with whom he has a child. His dream is to get a good education and live large when he returns home, but his older brothers, who are sponsoring his education, abandon him. Lucas becomes one of the stranded Africans in Russia. Thrown out in the streets of Moscow by his newfound love and the mother of his other child a baby girl, Lucas joins his classmates, who after graduating, turned into peddlers. Six years later he is caught by the cops and jailed. Will he survive? Soon, the truth about Browns phony overseas scholarships and job opportunities for the village youth is revealed. The government starts the elimination of the enemies of rural development; neither guilty nor innocent are safe. In Search of Greener Pastures is an exhilarating tale that reveals some unfortunate realities of our time and unmasks both the deadly activities of illicit drug peddlers in Russia and the general attitude of Russians towards immigrants. This is a well-told story that can serve as a tool for anti-drug and anti-human trafficking campaigns, which aim to educate the youth in Africa, especially those of school age. It is a story of greed, adventure, retribution, mystery, destiny, and regrets. This work is a tool for campaigning against drug trafficking, where millions of people find death and destruction.

History is filled with reports of war and poverty, accounts that rattle off numbers, names, dates, and locations without providing any sense of the experience itself. With heart, humor, and honesty, author Dandy Ahaoma Ahuruonye offers a unique glimpse into Igbo life in the wake of the 1960s Biafra-Nigeria War. A remarkable piece of African literature, "Long Search for Greener Pastures" tells the inspiring story of young Chike who realizes from an early age that his family's future depends on him. As he tries to navigate his community's competing beliefs of animism and Christianity, as well as traditional versus modern thought, Chike begins to recognize that if he and his family are ever to break free from the interminable cycle of scarcity, he must follow an uncharted path away from everything he knows. As he journeys alone into the world beyond, Chike experiences even more cruelty, prejudice, and loss. But as he bravely presses on, searching for any signs of hope or opportunity, he encounters unexpected help amid the harm when he finds friends who continue to point him in the right direction.

In his striking debut collection, Greener Pastures, Michael Wehunt shows why he is a powerful new voice in horror and weird fiction. From the round-robin, found-footage nightmare of “October Film Haunt: Under the House” to the jazz-soaked “The Devil Under the Maison Blue,” selected for both The Year’s Best Dark Fantasy & Horror and Year’s Best Weird Fiction, these beautifully crafted, emotionally resonant stories speak of the unknown encroaching upon the familiar, the inscrutable power of grief and desire, and the thinness between all our layers. Where nature rubs against small towns, in mountains and woods and bedrooms, here is strangeness seen through a poet’s eye. They say there are always greener pastures. These stories consider the cost of that promise.

In the Xhosa language, Ndabazabantu means ‘he who knows all the gossip about the enigmatic, as well as stories of the people of his town or village.’ The character was first created in the author’s collection of short stories, Children from Exile and other Stories. Ndabazabantu’s stories are refreshingly innocent, dramatic and poignant, and most of them hark back to a simpler lifestyle experienced by black folk living in the platteland – small country towns – from the 1950s to the 1980s. Of course, the unsavoury antics of apartheid regime do not escape Ndabazabantu’s satirical and occasionally scathing tongue. But this is not an angry book of recriminatory rhetoric. The author has chosen mainly to reflect on how these people made most of their lives under trying circumstances, and the stories focus on the culture, humour and pathos experienced by those check and jowl in the township known as uMasizakhe. In this collection, the author delves into a wide variety of themes, including culture, religion, anti-Christianity and beliefs in ghosts, mermaids and the tokoloshe. Several of the stories hark back to the author’s previous collection, Camdeboo Stories, providing further details and explanations. This is best seen in ‘Concert in the Church Hall’ where the origin of the conflict between the uncle, Kleynhans, and Charlien is explained. While Stories of Ndabazabantu can be enjoyed on its own, if the reader has read Camdeboo Stories, a total picture will emerge. Could Stories of Ndabazabantu then be classified as a sequel to Camdeboo? I will leave this to the reader and critics. The character and versatility of Ndabazabantu starts to mature in this book. He delves deep into cultural issues such as the dowry, and demonstrates that this is not solely the practice of Africans alone, but is rather a world-wide phenomenon

The Nigerian Civil War left behind unsung heroeswomen and children. Some of them had befriended soldiers to ensure the survival of their families. These children and others born out of wedlock constitute a community of people who have identity crises rocking their lives. Also, veterans of the war, abandoned by the authorities, were left as ordinary individuals to contend with the wars destructive impact. This is the focus of the title story, Other Peoples Children. Homeless captures the helplessness of isolated communities that are ill-prepared to battle the insurgency in northern Nigeria. Habibas Triumph tells of the phenomenon of forced marriages, even in literate families. Literacy, however, offers a victim the freedom of choice, which people of previous generations did not enjoy. Broken Lives exposes the pain of broken relationships on college campuses. While a young man walks away unscathed to enter another relationship, a young woman is left to nurse the wounds for a lifetime. The Peoples Court is a reflection of peoples rush to Nigerias capital city, Abuja, in search of greener pastures. Dasu Krishanmoorty, in his ninety fourth year, has immense faith in the power of memories to bring back days already lived for a re-evaluation, a leveling of highs and lows. Eventually, every man searches his past for clues, seeking to solve the enigma of being and the negotiation of a life not of his making. Dasu's personal tales are spun from four significant migrations that defined his life, tracing his lineage to an ancestor who was also a migrant. He takes the reader to places with different histories, geographies, and cultures. Three of these locations, once ruled by Muslim dynasties, are open-air museums of royal tombs and homes to awe-inspiring Islamic marvels of architecture: Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and New Delhi. In contrast, the setting of the first story in Dasu's collection, ?Cracking Infinity, ? epitomizes modern minimalism in the United States, the location of his last migration.

The short stories and poems in this collection were written by students at King George VI School and centre for physically disabled children in Zimbabwes second city, Bulawayo. HIV and AIDS have had a devastating effect on all the communities of Zimbabwe, and those with disabilities have not been exempt from the effects of the virus, as is reflected in many of the pieces in this collection. The book clearly demonstrates both the talent of the students and their concern about the issues facing their community and wider society. Some of the stories and poems tell the stories of their lives, some come straight from their imagination, and some simply speak of their dreams for a better future.

The Art of Survival: Depictions of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwean in Crisis offers a fresh, interdisciplinary examination of a period against which development in Zimbabwe is often measured, one epitomized by the severe shortages and runaway inflation of 2008. While journalistic stories of the 1998–2008 era often privilege the reductive stories of woe, defeat and crushed hopes, this volume explores how survival was still possible in those circumstances. The book offers insights into how ordinary Zimbabweans battled the odds by making startling innovations in language use to legitimize new survival strategies, how they weaved new songs and reinterpreted old ones to fight for survival, how social institutions such as churches reinterpreted popular gospel, and how authors, playwrights and dramatists crafted works that acknowledge the unprecedented difficulties and yet find humour, laughter and love in unusual places. This work will appeal to both scholars, who will appreciate the depth of the analysis, and the general reader.
