Edith Nesbit's stories in this volume are often overlooked in the wider context of the horror, science fiction and fantasy genres. But once read, they are not easily forgotten. A couple of the stories are perhaps a little uneven in their delivery. But even so, a story such as 'The Shadow' will have you looking over your shoulder as you turn the page.

Edith Nesbit is today best known for her works for children: her 1906 novel The Railway Children is a classic of the genre. Yet Nesbit had a much darker side, which revealed itself in her tales of terror and the supernatural. Most of these tales were written before the author established herself as a writer of children's stories, and were soon overshadowed, to be nearly forgotten-with one or two exceptions-for almost one hundred years. In 1988, Hugh Lamb edited In the Dark for the Equation Chillers series, and has now added a further seven stories for this expanded edition. Included are such famous tales as 'Man-Size in Marble' and 'John Charrington's Wedding', along with less well known-but equally chilling-stories of the supernatural and the macabre. In Nesbit's twilight world, the dead return from the grave; scientists pursue knowledge to the gates of death-and beyond; souls are bartered to the Devil in exchange for one last wish; a casual wager leads to madness; and a seemingly harmless maker of models exacts a terrible price for a wrong done years before. In his introduction, Hugh Lamb examines the colourful life of Edith Nesbit, painting a portrait of a woman whose unconventional life set her apart from her Victorian and Edwardian contemporaries in the ghost story genre. He also looks at some of the events and experiences which may have inspired Nesbit's supernatural fiction-events which, in the author's words, gave her 'nights and nights of anguish and horror, long years of bitterest fear and dread'.CONTENTS: Introduction by Hugh Lamb; Man-Size in Marble; Uncle Abraham's Response; From the Dead; The Haunted Inheritance; The Three Drugs; The Letter in Brown Ink; The Violet Car; John Charrington's Wedding; No. 17; The Pavilion; The House of Silence; The Mystery of the Semi-Detached; In the Dark; The Head; The Ebony Frame; Hurst of Hurstcote; The Five Senses; The Haunted House; The Shadow; The Detective; The Power of Darkness.

For the first time in one volume, the best stories of one of America's most popular classic authors of the supernatural. Robert William Chambers' The King in Yellow (1895) has long been recognised as a landmark work in the field of the macabre, and has been described as the most important work of American supernatural fiction between Poe and the moderns. Despite the book's success, its author was to return only rarely to the genre during the remainder of a writing career which spanned four decades. When Chambers did return to the supernatural, however, he displayed all the imagination and skill which distinguished The King in Yellow. He created the enigmatic and seemingly omniscient Westrel Keen, the 'Tracer of Lost Persons', and chronicled the strange adventures of an eminent naturalist who scours the earth for 'extinct' animals - and usually finds them. One of his greatest creations, perhaps, was 1920's The Slayer of Souls, which features a monstrous conspiracy to take over the world: a conspiracy which can only be stopped by supernatural forces. For the first time in a single volume, Hugh Lamb has selected the best of the author's supernatural tales, together with an introduction which provides further information about the author who was, in his heyday, called 'the most popular writer in America'.

The Power of Darkness was written in the year 1905 by Edith Nesbit. This book is one of the most popular novels of Edith Nesbit, and has been translated into several other languages around the world. Plot Summary: The figure of my wife came in it came straight towards the bed, its wide eyes were open and looked at me with love unspeakable, Edith Nesbit, best known as the author of The Railway Children and other children's classics, was also the mistress of the ghost story and tales of terror. She was able to create genuinely chilling narratives in which the returning dead feature strongly. Sadly, these stories have been neglected for many years, but now, at last, they are back in print. In this wonderful collection of eerie, flesh-creeping yarns, we encounter love that transcends the grave, reanimated corpses, vampiric vines, vengeful ghosts and other dark delights to make you feel fearful. These vintage spooky stories, tinged with horror, are told in a bold, forthright manner that makes them seem as fresh and unsettling as today's headlines.

This volume contains the weird tales of the British writer E. Nesbit (1858-1924), who wrote two early collections of horror stories, Grim Tales (1893) and Fear (1910), while gaining celebrity with an array of books for children. But the weird attracted her throughout her career, and she devoted herself to such themes as the haunted house, the ghost, psychological terror, and even some ventures into proto-science fiction, in such celebrated tales as "Man-Size in Marble" and "The Five Senses." Her weird work, long out of print, is now available again in this meticulously edited volume. Editor's Note: The stories in this book have largely been taken from the collection Fear (1910); "The Mass for the Dead" is taken from Grim Tales (1893), while "The Pavilion" is taken from To the Adventurous (1923), as reflecting the author's late revisions to the tale. The uncollected stories are taken from their magazine appearances as specified in the bibliography. There have been several other collections of Nesbit's weird tales--E. Nesbit's Tales of Terror, edited by Hugh Lamb (Methuen, 1983), subsequently revised as In the Dark: Tales of Terror (Equation, 1988) and In the Dark (Ash-Tree Press, 2000)--and they include stories not included here; but in my judgment these tales are not genuinely weird. The Classics of Gothic Horror series seeks to reprint novels and stories from the leading writers of weird fiction over the past two centuries or more. Ever since the Gothic novels of the late 18th century, supernatural horror has been a slender but provocative contribution to Western literature. Edgar Allan Poe, Ambrose Bierce, the Victorian ghost story writers, the "titans" of the early twentieth century (Arthur Machen, Algernon Blackwood, Lord Dunsany, M. R. James, H. P. Lovecraft), the Weird Tales writers, and many others contributed to the development and enrichment of weird fiction as a literary genre, and their work deserves to be enshrined in comprehensive, textually accurate editions. S. T. Joshi, a leading authority on weird fiction, has done exactly that in establishing this series. Using scholarly resources honed over decades of wide-ranging research, he has assembled volumes featuring not only the complete weird writings of the authors in question, but exhaustive bio-critical introductions and bibliographical data.
