Excerpt from A Day With John Milton Milton still retained much of that personal comeliness which had won him, at Cambridge, the nickname of Lady of Christ's College. His original red and white had now become a uniform pallor; his thick, light brown hair, parted at the top, and curling richly on his shoulders-{no close-cropt Roundhead this!) was beginning to fade towards grey. But his features were noble and symmetrical; he was well-built and well-proportioned; and he was justified in priding himself upon a personal appearance which he had never neglected or despised. In his own words, he was neither large nor small: at no time had he been considered ugly; and in youth, with a sword by his side, he had never feared the bravest. Such was the man who now, neatly dressed in black, was led into his study, upon the same floor as his bedroom, a small chamber hung with rusty green, - and there, seated in a large old elbow chair, received the morning salutations of his three daughters. Excerpt from English Prose Writings of John Milton There are omitted from this volume all the writings in which Milton replied to the Opponents of his views. The controversies of 250 years ago travelled by many paths in which we care no longer to assert a right of way. At all times, the Reformer who is answering opponents has his course of argument determined by the reason or the unreason Of other men. Forms of reply dependent upon accidents Of the attack are only to be read with measured judgment by those who have read the attack also and Often when we have read both, we have heard a sound of battle in the air that has appealed to our imaginations and disturbed our judgment. The battle Of Opinion rolls forward to new ground from century to century. The great truths are immutable, the applications Of them vary with the change of time. Excerpt from The Life of John Milton Lives by this popular author, except what are borrowed from Addison's criticism on the great Epic Poem. Immediately after Johnson's death, Thomas War ton published his edition of the Juvenile Poems.' In the preface and notes he scattered many anti dotes to Johnson's poison, which restored the minds of the lovers of true poetry to their proper tone: but it had not much effect with the multi tude, who resolved to nurse the tasteless dogmas which seemed to justify their own insensibility. The Wartons were men of the romantic school of poetry, which had gone out of fashion from the introduction of the French school at the restore tion of Charles II. The days of chivalry were gone and the picturesque requires a nicety of eye and brightness of fancy, which are not the endowments of the many. Excerpt from Lectures on English Poetry: To the Time of Milton It was the author's desire in the following pages to convey some idea of the merits of our earlier poets, and to direct attention to their works without entering into a formal critical analysis, which would have been too diffuse, and not sufficiently popular for a general lecture. That such a work as the present must be imperfect the author is well aware - the subject is copious, and there is much that he has been obliged to pass over with a hasty allusion, or altogether in silence. The ballads and fugitive verses familiarized to the public in the admirable collections of Percy and Ellis, and the poetry of many anonymous authors have sufficient claims for a separate notice, which would have been appended to the present volume, did it not already exceed the limits which the author proposed, and his treatment of the subject warrants. Excerpt from Select Minor Poems of John Milton The form of this book has been determined by the same considerations which influenced me in the preparation of my volume of Selections from Paradise Lost, I had learned from my observation of nearly two thousand pupils in literature that Milton's erudition makes it impossible for pupils of secondary school age to read his works intelligently without a definite preparation, through the study of certain conceptions with which he, in common with all the educated classes of his time, was perfectly familiar. Among these were the conceptions in regard to physical science which prevailed during the Middle Ages, the myths which are found in the Greek and Roman classics, and the religious dogmas held by the Christian world in the seventeenth century. Excerpt from Milton A family of Miltons, deriving the name in all probability from the parish of Great Milton near Thame, is found in various branches spread over Oxfordshire and the adjoin ing counties in the reign of Elisabeth The poet's grand father was a substantial yeoman, living at Stanton St. John, about five miles from Oxford, within the forest of Shot over, of which he was also an under-ranger. The ranger's son John was at school in Oxford, possibly as a chorister, conformed to the Established Church, and was in consoo quenco cast 03 by his father, who adhered to the old faith The disinherited son went up to London, and by the assistance of a friend was set up in business as a scrivener. A scrivener discharged some of the functions which, at the present day, are undertaken for us in a solicitor's office. John Milton the father, being a man of probity and force of character, was soon on the way to acquire a plentiful fortune. But he continued to live over his shop, which was in Bread Street, Cheapside, and which bore the sign of the Spread Eagle, the family crest. Excerpt from Milton's Paradise Lost This sonnet is one of the most' splendid acts of homage ever paid by one great poet to another. It was written during the great war of a hundred years ago, the struggle against the devouring am bitiou of Napoleon. It is dated 1802, a time of facile jubilation, no doubt, to those who did not or could not look ahead, but a time of utter gloom to one who, like Wordsworth, exalted the war as a holy war for great principles of Liberty and Good Faith. Excerpt from John Milton and His Times: An Historical Novel The descendants of this eminent man were not unworthy of him.
