Excerpt from In the Days of the Laggan Presbytery I have drawn largely on the manuscript Minutes of the Presbytery of the Laggan, now in the library of the Magee College, and in the numerous extracts given from these unpublished records I have kept to the old spelling and diction of the Minutes, feeling that any attempt to dress them up in more modern phraseology would rob them of much of their quaintness and old-world charm; and as this book is not intended for scholars, but for ordinary people, I have not been careful to give exactoccurrences recorded therein are drawn, believing that to do so would only be perplexing to most of the readers. Into whose hands this book is likely to come. The spelling in the extracts from the Laggan Minutes may be a little puzzling to some, but if the reader will bear in mind that y stands for th, as ye for the, yt for that. Excerpt from History of Congregations of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and Biographical Notices of Eminent Presbyterian Ministers and Laymen: With the Signification of Names of Places On the accession of Oliver Cromwell to supreme power, the Presbyterian ministers in Ireland were involved in trouble for they gave deadly Offence to the Republicans by protesting against the execution of Charles I., and by refusing to take the Engagement binding them to the support of the new government. When, however, the Protector saw that they were men not disposed to create political disturbance, and bent mainly on the spiritual enlightenment of the people, he changed his policy, and gave them considerable encourage ment. Presbyterianism meanwhile made steady progress for several years, so that, at the period of the Restoration, its adherents in Ulster were computed to amount to one hundred thousand. But dark days now awaited it. The ministers were exposed to a fresh proscription when the Protestant bishops, who had meanwhile been in exile, were restored to power. Excerpt from The Presbyterian Church: Its Worship, Functions, and Ministerial Orders This short "History of the Worship of the Church of Scotland, and Account of its Functions, Offices, and Orders," has been written with a fourfold object. 1. To promote an improvement in the ritual of the various branches of the Presbyterian Church. 2. To show that such improvements are in accord with the "use and wont" of the Reformed Church of Scotland. 3. To sketch in brief outline the various Functions and Offices prescribed in the "Directory for the Public Worship of God, agreed upon by the Assembly of Divines at Westminster, with the assistance of Commissioners from the Church of Scotland, as a part of the covenanted uniformity in religion betwixt the Churches of Christ in the Kingdoms of Scotland, England, and Ireland." 4. To indicate both the Scriptural regularity and validity of Presbyterian Orders. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This is the story of James, John, and Hamilton Armstrong, three sons of a yeoman farmer living on the Pennsylvania frontier at the outset of the American Revolution. James and John joined the Continental Army in 1776, rose from the ranks to become officers, and served until the army was disbanded in 1783. Hamilton remained home to work the farm, protect the family, and serve in militia and “ranger” units to defend the frontier from repeated attacks from hostile Indian tribes. Their combined wartime experiences encompassed almost the totality of the American Revolution, from Canada in the north to South Carolina in the south and along the western frontier. James and John fought in most of the major battles of the revolution, including Princeton, Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, Guilford Courthouse, Eutaw Springs, and Yorktown, where they distinguished themselves in the eyes of generals like the Marquis de Lafayette, Mad Anthony Wayne, Light- Horse Harry Lee, Nathanael Greene, and George Washington.

Women Writers And Old Age In Great Britain 1750 1850 written by Devoney Looser and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-08-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

This groundbreaking study explores the later lives and late-life writings of more than two dozen British women authors active during the long eighteenth century. Drawing on biographical materials, literary texts, and reception histories, Devoney Looser finds that far from fading into moribund old age, female literary greats such as Anna Letitia Barbauld, Frances Burney, Maria Edgeworth, Catharine Macaulay, Hester Lynch Piozzi, and Jane Porter toiled for decades after they achieved acclaim -- despite seemingly concerted attempts by literary gatekeepers to marginalize their later contributions. Though these remarkable women wrote and published well into old age, Looser sees in their late careers the necessity of choosing among several different paths. These included receding into the background as authors of "classics," adapting to grandmotherly standards of behavior, attempting to reshape masculinized conceptions of aged wisdom, or trying to create entirely new categories for older women writers. In assessing how these writers affected and were affected by the culture in which they lived, and in examining their varied reactions to the prospect of aging, Looser constructs careful portraits of each of her Subjects and explains why many turned toward retrospection in their later works. In illuminating the powerful and often poorly recognized legacy of the British women writers who spurred a marketplace revolution in their earlier years only to find unanticipated barriers to acceptance in later life, Looser opens up new scholarly territory in the burgeoning field of feminist age studies.
