Dans un pays où les minorités confessionnelles demeurent réfractaires à l’intégration dans un moule national, des esprits clairvoyants ont tenté de doter le pays d’institutions pour en faire un État. Celui-ci se cherche encore, noyé dans une société mercantile, où les valeurs morales importent moins que les convictions religieuses et les intérêts personnels. L'État Liban est une création récente et sa réalité constitutionnelle est basée sur des aspirations contradictoires. Par certains aspects pourtant – le secret bancaire, l’université, la relative liberté de la presse –, la société libanaise est moderne, mais le système politique qui la régit est encore tenu par des chefferies féodales, confortées par un communautarisme d’un autre âge. Le Liban n’est plus ce qu’il était : un havre de coexistence, de liberté et de douceur. Certes, il a fini par devenir une patrie, mais pas encore un État de droit, tout au plus un État tampon qui assure avec rudesse sa fragile condition. Dans une lecture à contre-courant des idées reçues, Abdallah Naaman procède à une déconstruction des mythes fondateurs. Cet essai aborde des questions dérangeantes qui touchent autant à la genèse des communautés libanaises qu’à leurs statuts civique et politique atypiques. Ce livre impudique arrache sans ménagement le vernis d'une société parfois archaïque dans laquelle la formation de la nation demeure une aventure inachevée. EXTRAIT S’il est vrai que l’incompréhension du présent d’un pays naît fatalement de l’ignorance de son passé, les stéréotypes qui marquent le Liban résultent d’une mauvaise information ou d’une désinformation délibérée.
