This book presents the only critical study of the public life and legacy of V. S. Azariah (1874-1945), the first Indian bishop of an Anglican diocese and the most successful leader of rural conversion movements to Christianity in modern India. Harper carefully explores Bishop Azariah's work, including his attempts to redress racism and improve social conditions in India, and documents -- for the first time anywhere -- the previously unknown controversy between Bishop Azariah and the great Mahatma Gandhi.

This is a biography of Vedanayagam Samuel Azariah (1874-1945), bishop of the Anglican Church in India from 1912 until his death in 1945. His life sheds new light on the challenges and opportunities faced by religious minorities throughout the world today. As a Christian leader in a non-Christian culture, he negotiated complex cultural, social, political, and economic pressure with exceptional skill and diplomacy. As the first Indian bishop of an Anglican diocese, and as modern India's most successful leader of depressed class and non-Brahmin conversion movements to Christianity, Azariah was equally at home with the untouchables of rural India and the unreachables of the British Empire. From this platform Azariah inevitably came into contact - and, ironically, also into conflict - with the dominating presence of Mahatma Gandhi. Susan Billington Harper here reconstructs major events and issues of Azariah's public life, including a previously unstudied controversy with Gandhi over the issue of conversion and relgious freedom in the 1930s. Based on hitherto untapped primary sources, including diocesan records and vernacular oral histories expressed in both stories and songs, this fascinating volume not only provides the first critical study of Bishop Azariah's life but also offers important - at times challenging - insights for those interested in modern India and the place of Christianity within it.

This book is a short introduction to one of the most remarkable transformations in the modern world that many people still do not know about. In 1900 more than 80 percent of the world’s Christians lived in Europe and North America and nearly all of the world’s missionaries were sent out “from the West to the rest.” In a dramatic turn of events Christianity experienced a decidedly “Southern shift” during the twentieth century. Today nearly 70 percent of the world’s 2.5 billion Christians live in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, while nearly half of all missionaries are being sent out into all the world from places like Brazil, Ethiopia, and South Korea. This book is intended to change the way readers think about the church and challenge the way Western Christians engage in contemporary missions.

How could the advocate who had been so painfully shy in the court rooms of Bombay and whose luggage was thrown off the train in the middle of the night on the station of Maritzburg in South Africa, acquire power to challenge the most powerful British Empire? Dr. DIlip Datta's book on Gandhi identifies the turning points in Gandhi's life and his strong determination, importunity and the flame burning within him for which Gandhi had made a mark in the history of India's freedom movement. Admitting that Gandhi's life was a continuing series of controversies, contestations and contradictions, Dr. Datta has analysed Gandhi's life and works sociologically in a reader-friendly manner without overlooking Gandhi's contribution as a modern liberal democrat.

At the time when the national movement was still in its early stages, Madan Mohan Malaviya emerged as an enigmatic but commanding figure in the political landscape of India. This work reconstructs Malaviya’s ideal of nationalism, which was composite, constructive and creative and offers a fresh perspective on an important period of modern India’s political history. Utilizing new and authentic source material, this book traces Malaviya’s role in the freedom struggle, the people who supported him, his relations with other established political leaders of the country within and outside of the Congress party and how he saw his own actions and role in public life. Taking Malaviya as a particular example of subcontinental leadership, Jagannath Prasad Misra studies the method and manner of Malaviya’s nationalist propaganda. He shows that rather than being a restraining influence, Malaviya’s faith in constitutional politics and educational advancement laid a solid foundation for the uplift of the nation.
