• This is the first study of the representation of animals and animality in Welsh literature. It introduces the reader to key ideas and concepts from the new and fast-growing field of animal studies, and suggests how Welsh rural and urban history might be redrawn from the perspective of animals and their agenda. • It provides new and exciting insights into a range of Welsh writings about animals, and examines how Welsh literature explores ways of thinking about intelligence, sensibilities and knowledge from an animal perspective. • The book introduces readers to the concept of a relational universe in which all life is bound together through a network of relations and connections and illustrates its importance to animal studies and Welsh writing.

Writer versus preacher: this book shows how this struggle has lain at the heart of Welsh writing and culture for the past two hundred years, intimately shaping the English language literature produced by Wales. Starting with a simple explanation of the history and character of Welsh Nonconformity, it traces the growing textual response to Nonconformity’s hegemonic cultural power from the eighteenth century onwards, culminating in twentieth-century writers’ attempts to undermine it by wresting words from the control of the pulpit. It also uncovers a whole new body of nineteenth-century fiction from Wales, and re-defines Dylan Thomas’s debt to his Nonconformist ancestors.

Pacifism Peace And Modern Welsh Writing written by Linden Peach and has been published by University of Wales Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

The book takes a literary-historical approach to its subject which opens up new perspectives on the history of peace and pacifism in Wales which historical approaches alone have overlooked. It includes English- and Welsh-language texts and highlights the interdependence of English and Welsh culture in Wales. Quotations from Welsh-language texts are given in Welsh and in English translation to assist readers who are not Welsh speakers. The reader is introduced to the changing nature of pacifism, peace and anti-warism and how these terms have acquired different meanings over time. The historical narrative is designed to make this scholarship more accessible to the reader who is not a specialist in peace studies. The arguments of the book are illustrated and developed in accessible but original readings of key Welsh writers on peace and pacifism.

The Urban Pulpit written by Matthew Bowman and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02-04 with Religion categories.

Matthew Bowman explores the world of a neglected group of American Christians: the self-identified liberal evangelicals who began in late nineteenth-century New York to reconcile traditional evangelical spirituality with progressive views on social activism and theological questions. These evangelicals emphasized the importance of supernatural conversion experience, but also argued that scientific advances, new movements in art, and the decline in poverty created by a new industrial economy could facilitate encounters with Christ. The Urban Pulpit chronicles the struggle of liberal evangelicals against conservative Protestants who questioned their theological sincerity and against secular reformers who grew increasingly devoted to the cause of cultural pluralism and increasingly suspicious of evangelicals over the course of the twentieth century. Liberal evangelicals walked a difficult path, facing increasing polarization in twentieth-century American public life; both conservative evangelicals and secular reformers insisted that religion and science were necessarily at odds and that evangelical Christianity was incompatible with cultural diversity. Liberal evangelicals rejected these simple dichotomies, but nonetheless found it increasingly difficult to defend their middle way. Drawing on history, anthropology, and religious studies, Bowman paints a complex portrait of these understudied Christians at work, at worship, and engaged in advocacy in the public square.

The darkness holds many surprises. In this collection of thirty stories of horror and the bizarre, we shall explore some of those surprises. Even though I’ve been extolling the virtues of darkness, I do encourage you to read this book with the lights on. Light does have its practical applications, you know. You have to see the words.
