While the near 1,500 victims of Titanic accounted for a huge loss of life, each of the ships here had a greater number of casualties, in some cases more than five times as many. In total, these 27 merchant ship sinkings resulted in a staggering loss of life at sea – more than 96,000 in total, 3,840 per ship. While the circumstances were different to Titanic, the outcome in each case was no less tragic. Yet, despite the fact that Titanic ranks behind so many other losses, so powerful has her name become that it was the inevitable choice to describe some of these other events, 'Germany's Titanic' and 'The Titanic of Japan' being two examples. Ships include the Lancastria, Britain's worst maritime disaster with 3,000 lost; the Ryusei Maru, a Japanese 'Hellship' loaded with 6,000 Allied POWs, torpedoed by a US submarine; and the Wilhelm Gustloff, a German liner packed with 7,800 civilians, sunk by a Russian submarine. There were no survivors and this tragedy was the worst maritime disaster of all time.

When Patricia's mother sailed for America she left her baby behind in Ireland with her grandmother. Fourteen years later, and Pat is on route to America to meet the mother she's never known. It is 1912, and the ship Pat travels on is the Titanic. Just why has her beloved granny Edith sent her away? And why did her mother leave her? The earthly Pat will never know, and it is left to her ghost to travel back in time and find the answers. "Part literary ghost story, part historical document, this is a beguiling read. The concept is a striking one. The Titanic tragedy still holds our imagination, and while this has been used many times in film and fiction, there is always room for a new angle, which you certainly have here." - Cornerstones Literary Consultancy, London.

After rewriting history with their discovery of a Nazi U-boat off the coast of New Jersey, legendary divers John Chatterton and Richie Kohler decided to investigate the great enduring mystery of history's most notorious shipwreck: Why did Titanic sink as quickly as it did? To answer the question, Chatterton and Kohler assemble a team of experts to explore Titanic, study its engineering, and dive to the wreck of its sister ship, Brittanic, where Titanic's last secrets may be revealed. Titanic's Last Secrets is a rollercoaster ride through the shipbuilding history, the transatlantic luxury liner business, and shipwreck forensics. Chatterton and Kohler weave their way through a labyrinth of clues to discover that Titanic was not the strong, heroic ship the world thought she was and that the men who built her covered up her flaws when disaster struck. If Titanic had remained afloat for just two hours longer than she did, more than two thousand people would have lived instead of died, and the myth of the great ship would be one of rescue instead of tragedy. Titanic's Last Secrets is the never-before-told story of the Ship of Dreams, a contemporary adventure that solves a historical mystery.
