In What World Do You Live? by Chief Luis Tijerina In What World Do You Live: You Have a Choice You Know? is an intriguing autobiography by Chief Luis Tijerina, aka Watching Wolf, of one man's struggle with a life overshadowed by drug and alcohol abuse. During this challenge, he searched deep within and listened intently to his 'inner voice' to initiate changes to the way he felt, thought, and responded to different events in his life. In doing so, he was able to discover a 'Higher Power' that led him from the Catholic Church, in which he was raised, to a new spiritual world inspired by his Native American heritage and culture. To quote the author, "The purpose of this book is to bring you to an awareness of your inner self in the place where you reside in this world, physically, emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually. ...I have found that many parallel worlds reside together side by side, and it is up to me to put myself where I choose to be for the greater good." After all, "Nothing changes if nothing changes." About the Author Luis Tijerina is a native of Odessa, Texas. He started working in the field of computer technology right after graduating from high school. He opened an IT services business a few years later before he decided to work as a communications manager for an oil well services company. He married at the age of twenty-five and raised two children. He became the chief of the tribe in Trans-Pecos Region of Texas in 2005 and still acts as one to this day.

This book is about hope and a call to action to make the world the kind of place we want to live in. Our hope is to provoke conversation, and gently challenge possibly long-held views, beliefs, and ideologies about the way the world works and the people in that world. Written by eminent researchers and experienced practitioners, the book explores the principles that underpin living well, and gives examples of how this can be achieved not just in our own lives, but across communities and the planet we share. Chapters cover the stages of life from childhood to ageing, the foundations of everyday flourishing, including health and relationships, and finally wellbeing in the wider world, addressing issues such as economics, politics and the environment. Based in the scientific evidence of what works and supported by illustrations of good practice, this book is both ambitious and aspirational. The book is designed for a wide audience – anyone seeking to create positive change in the world, their institutions or communities. www.creatingtheworldwewanttolivein.org

Life sometimes seems to be like a mighty magnet, which compels one almost in remote control fashion. Yet if karma has the final say, why would it appear that some people are luckier than others? Our own thoughts, words, choices, habits and attitudes continue to turn and empower circumstances, events and people, which in turn touch and shape our destiny. Yet we often find ourselves trapped in confusion where life no longer seems to make any sense. I believe that within the horizon of our hearts, the voice of our spirit echoes truth. We are designed to explore and discover our inmost self, the wealth of light and life within our reach.

The play which gave rise to this short story was written in November 2020, during the time of social isolation, originally bearing the title “Quem está aí?” (Who’s there?). In that month, more than 13,000 deaths were recorded in Brazil, a number that, despite being very high, marked the lowest figure since the curve began to fall in August. It was in this downward trend that the expression ‘new normal’ appeared, which predicted a new way of living, where there would be more compassion and respect for nature to keep similar situations to the one that forced us into confinement from reoccurring. Travelling back and forth from madness to despair, denialism to reality, politics to faith, “The world I live in and the unexpected visitor” incites a discussion of the way in which material accomplishments are often prioritised instead of valuing the simplicity of life and posits that perhaps it is going too far to consider this a ‘normal’ life. With references to the dystopias “Animal Farm” and “1984” by George Orwell, the story shows that, despite our eternal search for a better world, there will always be the balance between good and bad, compassion and greed. Even so, giving up will never be the best option. Apathetic inertia further strengthens those who wish to maintain the status quo of a society where only a minority has the luxury of enjoying themselves at the expense of others. It also reinforces the importance that education and the arts have in forming a more just society. Treated by many as superfluous or even subversive activities, they give us the skills we need to be able to see through the lies that people try to make us believe as if they were unquestionable truths. A scientist makes a powerful case that preservation of the integrity of the biosphere is a necessity and an inviolable human right. A century of industrial development is the briefest of moments in the half billion years of the earth's evolution. And yet our current era has brought greater changes to the earth than any period in human history. The biosphere, the globe's life-giving envelope of air and climate, has been changed irreparably. In A World to Live In, the distinguished ecologist George Woodwell shows that the biosphere is now a global human protectorate and that its integrity of structure and function are tied closely to the human future. The earth is a living system, Woodwell explains, and its stability is threatened by human disruption. Industry dumps its waste globally and makes a profit from it, invading the global commons; corporate interests overpower weak or nonexistent governmental protection to plunder the planet. The fossil fuels industry offers the most dramatic example of environmental destruction, disseminating the heat-trapping gases that are now warming the earth and changing the climate forever. The assumption that we can continue to use fossil fuels and “adapt” to climate disruption, Woodwell argues, is a ticket to catastrophe. But Woodwell points the way toward a solution. We must respect the full range of life on earth—not species alone, but their natural communities of plant and animal life that have built, and still maintain, the biosphere. We must recognize that the earth's living systems are our heritage and that the preservation of the integrity of a finite biosphere is a necessity and an inviolable human right.
