La Roma seicentesca è una città molto speciale dove ogni luogo si presenta come unico, straordinario palcoscenico nel quale, persone, usi, fogge e mondi diversi si amalgamano tra loro perfettamente e dove riescono a convivere ideologie e poteri diversi. In epoca barocca le occasioni particolari e gli eventi della vita quotidiana si presentano con gli attributi della festa e si consumano presso il grande pubblico come uno spettacolo, nell'ambito del quale, non è più possibile rintracciare differenza tra le occasioni religiose e quelle laiche che finiscono per interagire totalmente. Il volume è dedicato all'analisi di un gruppo di incisioni del secolo XVII che fa parte del fondo "Avvenimenti", raccolta di stampe dedicate ai vari aspetti della vita a Roma tra il Cinquecento e la fine dell'Ottocento. Le acqueforti esaminate illustrano eventi per i quali si era soliti allestire grandiosi apparati effimeri: dai "Possessi" dei pontefici neoeletti alle Girandole, dal Carnevale alle Feste dinastiche, fino agli apparati funebri. Il fondo fu acquistato dal Comune di Roma nel 1930, dalle librerie antiquarie Landini e Luzzietti, gestite da noti antiquari attivi all'epoca nella capitale e costituisce un patrimonio iconografico di eccezionale valore documentario.

Music and space in the early modern world shaped each other in profound ways, and this is particularly apparent when considering Rome, a city that defined itself as the "grande teatro del mondo". The aim of this book is to consider music and space as fundamental elements in the performance of identity in early modern Rome. Rome’s unique milieu, as defined by spiritual and political power, as well as diplomacy and competition between aristocratic families, offers an exceptionally wide array of musical spaces and practices to be explored from an interdisciplinary perspective. Space is viewed as the theatrical backdrop against which to study a variety of musical practices in their functions as signifiers of social and political meanings. The editors wish to go beyond the traditional distinction between music theatrical spectacles – namely opera – and other musical genres and practices to offer a more comprehensive perspective on the ways in which not only dramatic, but also instrumental music and even the sounds of voices and objects in the streets relied on the theatrical dimension of space for their effectiveness in conveying social and political messages. While most chapters deal with musical performances, some focus on specific aspects of the Roman soundscape, or are even intentionally "silent", dealing with visual arts and architecture in their performative and theatrical aspects. The latter offer a perspective that creates a visual counterpoint to the ways in which music and sound shaped space.

Peter Paul Rubens and the Crisis of the Beati Moderni takes up the question of the issues involved in the formation of recent saints - or Beati moderni (modern Blesseds) as they were called - by the Jesuits and Oratorians in the new environment of increased strictures and censorship that developed after the Council of Trent with respect to legal canonization procedures and cultic devotion to the saints. Ruth Noyes focuses particularly on how the new regulations pertained to the creation of emerging cults of those not yet canonized, the so-called Beati moderni, such as Jesuit founders Francis Xavier and Ignatius Loyola, and Filippo Neri, founder of the Oratorians. Centrally involved in the book is the question of the fate and meaning of the two altarpiece paintings commissioned by the Oratorians from Peter Paul Rubens. The Congregation rejected his first altarpiece because it too specifically identified Filippo Neri as a cult figure to be venerated (before his actual canonization) and thus was caught up in the politics of cult formation and the papacy’s desire to control such pre-canonization cults. The book demonstrates that Rubens' second altarpiece, although less overtly depicting Neri as a saint, was if anything more radical in the claims it made for him. Peter Paul Rubens and the Crisis of the Beati Moderni offers the first comparative study of Jesuit and Oratorian images of their respective would-be saints, and the controversy they ignited across Church hierarchies. It is also the first work to examine provocative Philippine imagery and demonstrate how its bold promotion specifically triggered the first wave of curial censure in 1602.

[Italiano]: Prendendo come fonte di partenza la cronaca inedita di Andrea Rubino (Notitia di quanto è occorso in Napoli dal 1648 fino a tutto il 1669) e le numerose descrizioni di cerimonie e apparati decorativi in essa contenute, il volume affronta il problema del controllo dello spazio della città di Napoli negli anni successivi alla rivolta di Masaniello. Il testo analizza la “politica cerimoniale” di cinque viceré - dal conte di Oñate a Pedro Antonio de Aragón - affiancata da quella del governo municipale e del capitolo della cattedrale, e sottolinea i momenti di attrito tra i diversi cerimoniali e la realizzazione polifonica dei principali eventi festivi. Lo studio integra l’analisi di diverse fonti: le cronache, gli avvisi (in particolare quelli conservati a Roma e Modena), le polizze di pagamento degli antichi banchi napoletani, i protocolli notarili, le consulte del Consejo de Italia, i viglietti dei viceré, quadri e incisioni dell’epoca e, ovviamente, le relazioni - manoscritte e a stampa - destinate a trasmettere il discorso della festa. Queste ultime, generalmente considerate come fonte di partenza per lo studio di ogni cerimonia, risultano fortemente ridimensionate dal confronto con una documentazione di carattere meno intenzionale. Il “tributo ossequioso” delle feste diventa dunque parte integrante di una contrattatazione dell’esercizio del potere che acquista la sua visibilità all’interno dello spazio urbano, in cui non solo le grandi cerimonie scenografiche ma anche le semplici feste per le inaugurazioni delle opere pubbliche sono indicate come un’importante occasione per la rappresentazione del consenso. ./[English]: Starting from the unpublished chronicle of Andrea Rubino (Notitia di quanto è occorso in Napoli dal 1648 fino a tutto il 1669) and the numerous descriptions of ceremonies and festivals’ decorations that it describes, the present work deals with the issue of controlling Naples’ urban space in the years following the revolt of Masaniello (1647-1648). The book analyzes the "ceremonial policy" of five viceroys - from the Count of Oñate to Pedro Antonio de Aragón - flanked by that of the municipal government and the cathedral chapter, and highlights some instances of friction between the different ceremonials to show the polyphonic source of the main festive events. The study integrates the analysis of different sources: the chronicles, the gazettes (in particular those preserved in Rome and Modena), the payments of Neapolitan public banks, the notary protocols, the consultations of the Consejo de Italia, the viceroys' viglietti, paintings and engravings and, of course, the festival books - handwritten and printed - intended to convey the discourse of festival. The latter, generally considered as main sources for the study of each ceremony, are properly contextualized by comparing and contrasting them with “less biased” forms of documentation. The "obsequious tribute" offered through the festivals becomes a way for negotiating the exercise of power that acquires its visibility within the urban space, in which not only the great scenic festivals but also the simple ceremonies for the inauguration of public works were an important opportunity for representing consensus

Con alterne vicende, segnate dagli avvenimenti storici e dall'evolversi degli iniziali criteri ispiratori, si dipana lungo tutto il Novecento la complessa e, in certo qual modo, travagliata storia del Museo di Roma. D'altro canto, già nell'ambizioso assunto di voler costituire un Museo in grado di ricomporre esaustivamente, in un unico grande affresco, la secolare storia di Roma, dalla città dei pontefici alla giovane capitale d'Italia, erano implicite tutte le difficoltà e le ambiguità che ne avrebbero contrassegnato il percorso. Lo scoppio della seconda guerra mondiale impose la chiusura del Museo allora collocato nel grande edificio di Via dei Cerchi che sulla facciata recava l'orgogliosa scritta “Palazzo dei Musei di Roma”. Al momento di riallestire il Museo, finita la guerra, prese corpo l'esigenza di trovare una sede che, sia per prestigio storico e architettonico sia per ubicazione, corrispondesse pienamente alla qualità e all'importanza delle collezioni e ne consentisse un più ampio e compiuto sviluppo. Non senza una “dura battaglia”, come ricorda Antonio Maria Colini, il Museo di Roma ottenne il settecentesco Palazzo Braschi, potendo cosí riaprire al pubblico nel 1952 secondo un ordinamento in tre grandi sezioni, topografia, storia e costumanze che rispettava grosso modo la configurazione degli anni Trenta. In questa fase il Museo conobbe una stagione assai felice per il favore del pubblico e per l'incremento costante e prezioso delle sue collezioni grazie anche, in particolare, alla generosa attività della “Associazione degli Amici dei Musei” che favorí importanti lasciti e donazioni. Nei decenni successivi l'arricchimento delle collezioni con opere di notevole valenza storico-artistica e la significativa rilevanza della formazione del Gabinetto Comunale delle Stampe e dell'Archivio Fotografico Comunale non si traducono, tuttavia, in una contestuale riflessione sulla necessità di riesaminare e aggiornare criticamente i criteri ispiratori del Museo alla luce delle nuove istanze culturali imposte dai profondi mutamenti metodologici e di contesto sociale. In quegli stessi anni si avviava anche quel lento ma inesorabile degrado strutturale di Palazzo Braschi che nel 1987 ne determinò la chiusura. Giunti finalmente, dopo quindici anni alla parziale riapertura del Palazzo si imponeva la decisione di cosa offrire al pubblico delle ricche collezioni del Museo, quale selezione del vasto e articolato patrimonio e quale chiave di lettura privilegiare: o proporre una presentazione delle opere che si configurasse come definitivo, anche se limitato, allestimento del Museo di Roma o presentare un florilegio cronologico, dal Medioevo al Novecento, di quelle artisticamente e storicamente più importanti e significative. Le opere presentate costituiscono solo un piccolo spaccato di quella miniera di fonti figurative conservate nel Museo, un patrimonio inestimabile per quanti vogliano studiare o semplicemente conoscere la secolare storia artistica e sociale di Roma.

2011 Winner of the Phyllis Goodhart Gordan Book Prize of the Renaissance Society of America Naples in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries managed to maintain a distinct social character while under Spanish rule. John A. Marino's study explores how the population of the city of Naples constructed their identity in the face of Spanish domination. As Western Europe’s largest city, early modern Naples was a world unto itself. Its politics were decentralized and its neighborhoods diverse. Clergy, nobles, and commoners struggled to assert political and cultural power. Looking at these three groups, Marino unravels their complex interplay to show how such civic rituals as parades and festival days fostered a unified Neapolitan identity through the assimilation of Aragonese customs, Burgundian models, and Spanish governance. He discusses why the relationship between mythical and religious representations in ritual practices allowed Naples's inhabitants to identify themselves as citizens of an illustrious and powerful sovereignty and explains how this semblance of stability and harmony hid the city's political, cultural, and social fissures. In the process, Marino finds that being and becoming Neapolitan meant manipulating the city's rituals until their original content and meaning were lost. The consequent widening of divisions between rich and poor led Naples's vying castes to turn on one another as the Spanish monarchy weakened. Rich in source material and tightly integrated, this nuanced, synthetic overview of the disciplining of ritual life in early modern Naples digs deep into the construction of Neapolitan identity. Scholars of early modern Italy and of Italian and European history in general will find much to ponder in Marino's keen insights and compelling arguments.
