This book examines some theoretical and empirical aspects about complexities of inclusion, disability and culture. It challenges the globalized technical and reductionist approach of inclusion and argues that concepts of disability and inclusion are culturally constructed. Disability and inclusion are concepts which do not define a global agenda, in the sense that one size fits all. Rather they should be seen as being completely context dependent and that they should be deconstructed with respect to specific cultural contexts, with respects to society, ethics, religion and history. The main argument of the book is that many cultural backgrounds, including Egyptians, have their own long-standing beliefs and practices which do not define or address disability in the same way as western culture. Such cultural differences in understanding disability may lead to different understandings, conceptualizations and practices of inclusion. The book articulates disability and inclusion within a socio-ethical-religious discourse based on the Islamic underpinnings of equality and differences. This discourse enhances and supports the calls for considering inclusion and disability within a cultural model that takes into account the common values about disability in any given context which consequently will affect the way educational provision is provided in that context. Finally, the book challenges the “psychological” concept of “attitude” that has been represented in the literature simply as a matter of acceptance or rejection. Inclusion, Disability and Culture shows that “attitude” is a complex and context-dependent issue that can’t be understood in isolation from the wider context within which such responses were created. Specifically, the role of the social views about disability, religious values, school cultures, educational system and structural and organizational constraints can’t be underestimated in understanding teachers’ attitudes towards a complex issue like inclusion.

Disability is a complex multidimensional social construct where the type of disability and the level of support of individuals needs to be considered within leisure provision. In a leisure context, people with a disability often face a multitude of constraints to participation. However, when leisure is possible, the benefits are substantial and worth pursuing. While other marginalised populations have received a great deal of attention across disciplines and in the field of leisure and recreation, disability has received comparatively less attention and generally in isolation to the leisure context. This book concentrates on "disability citizenship in leisure". The chapters focus on examining the leisure lives of people with different types of disability by supporting their leisure endeavours through innovations in technology, service provision and the imagination. Each chapter has a different social setting, involves different groups of people with disability, and challenges conventional wisdom about what is possible when ability is seen, nurtured and, then, flourishing with the opportunities provided. Rather than leisure being seen in isolation, the context of this book explores leisure as part of everyday lives through valuing Management issues that centre on constraints to sport participation, supply side attributes, participant behaviours, consumption of disability sport, policy implementation, and sponsor congruence. This book offers insight on the politics of inclusion in Vietnam through a Foucauldian and post-colonial perspective on disability and education. Drawing on a socio-historical analysis of the inclusion of disabled people in Vietnam in the twenty-first century, the book guides readers through a ‘history of the present.’ By reflecting on the treatment of disabled people in Vietnamese social history, the book argues that this journey to inclusion calls for critical reflections on the challenges and possibilities for policies to transform exclusion for disabled people. The book unveils the problematics of social and educational institutions in governing disability and difference through a critical reflection on discourses and power in the global and local juncture, in relation to its engagement with disability in the global South. The intersection between the global politics of disability rights and development and the local politics of inclusion in Vietnam shapes the cultural politics of education. The ways inclusive education is historically constructed, within this socio-historical condition, reflects the challenges of inclusive thought and action for transforming injustice. Going beyond ‘deconstructive politics,’ The Journey to Inclusion argues for a re-positioning of the relationships between the global North and South as an alternative approach to inclusion. It suggests that critical research must construct a politics of engagement with subjugated voices and representations in transnational, national, and local contexts. A reflexive, critical, and inclusive dialogue that engages with Southern knowledge offers a political platform for reframing justice in the twenty-first century.
