La moderna democracia se configuró en la tensión entre el liberalismo y el republicanismo. El primero, con una mirada desconfiada hacia los ciudadanos, sobre todo hacia los ciudadanos más pobres, creó instituciones que, en lo posible, debían ser impermeables a la voz de aquéllos desprovistos de virtud. En oposición a ese concepto de democracia, el republicanismo aspirará a extender el ideal de ciudadanía comenzando por el derecho al voto. Que las cosas decantaran hacia uno u otro lado, hacia el ideal aristocrático o hacia el participativo, sería cuestión -como señala Félix Ovejero en esta obra- "del ruido y de la furia, de la historia". En la primera parte del libro, el autor muestra que los argumentos liberales utilizados para desconfiar de los ciudadanos apuntan, en realidad, a problemas de las instituciones liberales. Al examinar esas instituciones a partir de la tensión entre libertad y democracia, Ovejero prueba que, contra una opinión extendida, el liberalismo tiene importantes puntos de fricción con el ideal democrático. En la segunda parte, se ocupa de la tradición republicana y de su idea de democracia, y estudia el modo en que los conceptos republicanos -virtud, participación, deliberación, libertad, autogobierno- se relacionan entre sí, y cuál es el sentido y la importancia de cada uno de ellos para propiciar instituciones democráticas, igualdad material y virtud cívica. Ovejero cita a Kant, para quien "la constitución republicana es la única perfectamente adecuada al derecho de los hombres, pero es muy difícil de establecer, hasta el punto de que muchos afirman que la república es un Estado de ángeles". Sin embargo, Kant aboga por dicha constitución, y afirma: "El problema del establecimiento de un Estado tiene siempre solución, incluso cuando se trate de un pueblo de demonios: basta con que éstos posean entendimiento". El republicanismo -concluye Ovejero- escapa al dilema liberal entre libertad y democracia.

Una excelente novela histórica del autor del celebérrimo El prisionero de Zenda. Tan sólo esa última obra juvenil (El prisionero de Zenda) se reimprime continuamente en España, estando olvidadas otras suyas de más enjundia, como este El espejo del rey, que el novelista tenía por la mejor suya. Anthony Hope Nació el 9 de febrero de 1863 en Londres. Estudió en la Universidad de Cambridge y ejerció la abogacía de 1887 a 1894. Su primera obra fue A Man of Mark (1890). Dedicó toda su vida a la actividad de escritor, que se vio coronada por un gran éxito y le valió, entre otros honores, la concesión del título nobiliario de Sir en 1918. Pronto se hizo famoso con la publicación, en 1894, de El prisionero de Zenda, que gozó de un inmenso favor popular. Y pocas semanas después de la publicación de tal obra, Anthony Hope logró renovar su extraordinario éxito con The Dolly Dialogues Algunas de sus obras fueron llevadas al cine. Falleció en 1933.

Modern liberal societies are submerged in conflict and disagreement. People disagree about almost everything—not only about matters of justice, but also about issues that are more private. They disagree on how to interpret freedom and equality; they disagree and even experience conflict with issues regarding the use of a veil, or children wearing crucifixes in public spaces; they also enter into conflict and disagreement regarding issues such as homosexuality, extramarital sex, drugs, euthanasia, abortion, suicide, and experimentation on animals. All these issues can be understood as moral problems, but we also have disagreements concerning other topics that are unrelated to moral issues. For modern liberals, the existence of such conflicts is due to the possibility of people, bearing the right to disagree, expressing themselves in a free and equal way. This freedom is indeed one of the biggest triumphs in the history of liberalism: many societies have come to be constituted by autonomous and free individuals who have the capacity to choose their lives and the values that will guide them. In the middle of this panorama, tolerance plays an extremely important role for liberal thinking. Without tolerance, disagreements and conflicts will hardly coexist or be resolved in a peaceful manner. Liberals say that despite the fact that there is a plurality of values and diversity within the different lifestyles, we should tolerate all those who do not agree with our own values. On this view, tolerance becomes a key element for the flourishing and progression of moral life. Yet, liberals should ask themselves: is modern liberalism’s structure of practical reason compatible with the moral ideal of tolerance? René González de la Vega argues that liberal deontological theories cannot give proper answers to the main problems raised by the moral ideal of tolerance. La filosofía política de Höffe se ajusta a la orientación institucionalista predominante en la filosofía política desarrollada a lo largo de la modernidad. A este rasgo común, el autor alemán añade un marcado sesgo normativista: los seres humanos no sólo necesitan el fundamento institucional del orden coactivo del Estado, sino que además tienen el legítimo y comprensible interés en que dicho orden esté conformado de acuerdo a principios universalmente justificables. En este libro, de capital relevancia en la extensa bibliografía del autor, Höffe presenta de manera sistemática su fundamentación del Estado y de la competencia coercitiva del mismo.
