Interpreting the myths of the digital age: why we believed in the power of cyberspace to open up a new world. The digital era promises, as did many other technological developments before it, the transformation of society: with the computer, we can transcend time, space, and politics-as-usual. In The Digital Sublime, Vincent Mosco goes beyond the usual stories of technological breakthrough and economic meltdown to explore the myths constructed around the new digital technology and why we feel compelled to believe in them. He tells us that what kept enthusiastic investors in the dotcom era bidding up stocks even after the crash had begun was not willful ignorance of the laws of economics but belief in the myth that cyberspace was opening up a new world. Myths are not just falsehoods that can be disproved, Mosco points out, but stories that lift us out of the banality of everyday life into the possibility of the sublime. He argues that if we take what we know about cyberspace and situate it within what we know about culture—specifically the central post-Cold War myths of the end of history, geography, and politics—we will add to our knowledge about the digital world; we need to see it "with both eyes"—that is, to understand it both culturally and materially.After examining the myths of cyberspace and going back in history to look at the similar mythic pronouncements prompted by past technological advances—the telephone, the radio, and television, among others—Mosco takes us to Ground Zero. The Western idea of democracy, based on human opinions and the counting of votes, has become obsolete. The exclusively human form of democracy is being substituted by a new kind of contract which, through digital architecture, the internet of things and sensors, extends participation to all of the different entities that make up our habitat. Parliaments, citizen assemblies, parties and all kinds of the political architecture of interaction, inspired by the model of the polis, are giving way to platforms, blockchains and different network environments. In this interactive ecosystem, humans, data, viruses, the climate, sensors, biodiversity and informatic territories have begun to express collaborative policies and solutions through a dialogue with data. Today, the Western idea of society, founded on a contract between citizens and limited to the cohabitation of human subjects (just as the idea of citizenship is based on the fundamental rights of people) faced with the challenges of the pandemic, of climate change and those posed by the latest generation of intelligent networks, turns out to be inadequate. The digital citizenship of today is the research area in which to search for the overcoming of the Western political project and to begin a new culture of governance within complex networks characterized by interactions within an architecture that is no longer composed either of subjects nor objects.

Ritengo che l’autenticità sia principalmente uno stile di vita, di rispettabilità e di congruenza tra il pensiero coltivato ed espresso e il tipo di comportamento tenuto, in una precisa situazione o contesto. L’autenticità segna un confine ben delineato per la sottoscritta, equiparabile ad un punto di svolta interpersonale, per tenere a bada le insicurezze e altre fragilità palpabili. Via gli scoramenti che destabilizzano l’umore e al bando pure le paranoie! Spazio, invece, all’ottimismo, al coraggio e alla determinazione, tenendo gli occhi aperti sulle mete da perseguire. “Guardare avanti” è un imperativo ostinato che mi sono posta, lanciare il cuore oltre l’ostacolo diventa, altrettanto, un monito per migliorarmi e credere con più determinazione nel coraggio e nel sacrificio. Nel motivarmi a essere autentica, penso, inoltre, alle conseguenze negative dell’essere “in antitesi” con quanto pensano o fanno altre persone, ma comunque, senza scendere a compromessi destabilizzanti per la mia moralità. Tuttavia, vale sempre la pena mettersi in discussione per una giusta causa. Dai confronti e dalle divergenze s’impara a utilizzare la tolleranza, la diplomazia e la giusta distanza dalle tensioni negative... E quando sarò in bilico tra l’essere autentica o il decidere di esserlo meno del solito, sarà, comunque vada, una verifica o una conquista più consapevole e ponderata al mio modo di essere. Più mi sento immersa nell’accadimento che vivo e meno mi preoccupo di come mi vedono gli altri, perdendo in termini di razionalità ma prediligendo, di sicuro, i miei sentimenti ad oltranza.
