La época del paradigma liberal se diluía en una nueva fase de la historia llena de inesperados acontecimientos, la que luego sería conocida como período de entreguerras.No habían faltado analistas que bajo las brillantes fachadas anteriores a la guerra habían advertido síntomas de decadencia, aunque aún era pronto como para que se les prestara atención. Pero 1918 resultó ser una fecha que dividía los hechos contemporáneos en un antes y un después: el mundo pasó a ser otra cosa. Los sucesivos acontecimientos acabaron de rematar lo que quedaba de la fase precedente, y una vez más se pudo observar cómo, inesperadamente, se hundía lo que parecía una consolidada situación política, cultural y económica.Cien años más tarde, otra vez ante una nueva fase incierta de la historia, el presente texto ha recogido observaciones de un conjunto de profesores de distintas universidades que, desde una distancia crítica, pueden llevar a retomar las reflexiones acerca de la crisis aludida para ahora poder analizar las incertidumbres de nuestro momento actual.

Even in our own time, there are references, researches, and articles that, although in different ways, all seem to be connected by a worried regard for his diagnoses. In the two parts of this study, is made an attempt to show, however, why Spengler cannot be evoked (or dismissed) as the anti-West. Rather, it is a matter of pointing out how the mimetic blurring with the positions of the alleged prophet of doom, in the name of the West's self-love and its exceptionalism, risks confirming the prognosis of the decline, testifying to the misery, or impotence, of the critique aimed at opposing its fulfilment.

A scuola, a parte le discipline scientifiche, in realtà si studia solo la storia. Se avete fatto il classico vi sarete accorti di non aver studiato la letteratura italiana ma la storia della letteratura italiana. Lo stesso vale per la storia della letteratura latina e la storia della letteratura greca. Poi non avete studiato la filosofia ma la storia della filosofia (con lo stesso insegnante di storia). E non avete studiato né musica né arti visive, ma storia dell’arte. E naturalmente avete studiato storia − politica, militare, culturale, economica, sociale, ... C’è solo la storia. Nei licei diversi dal classico i programmi delle materie umanistiche sono ridotti, di poco o di molto, ma seguono gli stessi criteri generali, perché all’epoca in cui sono state stabilite le linee fondamentali dei programmi ministeriali il liceo classico era il modello di tutti gli altri. Ma come si dovrebbero studiare altrimenti le materie umanistiche? I programmi, che ancora si ispirano alla filosofia storicista, sono un grave ostacolo per quegli insegnanti intelligenti e innovatori che cercano di rendere la scuola un’esperienza entusiasmante per i loro allievi. In questo libro ho cercato di mostrare che l’impostazione storicista, con l’esagerata importanza attribuita alla storia e la parallela sottovalutazione del sapere tecnico e scientifico, impone agli studenti una dieta intellettuale monotona. Non li incoraggia a leggere i classici né a dedicarsi seriamente alle arti. Non insegna loro a scrivere. Soprattutto non insegna loro che cosa voglia dire, in teoria e in pratica, in filosofia come nella vita, prendere una posizione sulla base di argomenti, prove, ragioni, valutando i pro e i contro, ascoltando le ragioni degli altri.
