[English]: A spectral and haunting figure, Oswald Spengler, with his main work (The Decline of the West) reappears on the scene every time the present is experienced as a moment of crisis or political, ideological, cultural transition. Even in our own time, there are references, researches, and articles that, although in different ways, all seem to be connected by a worried regard for his diagnoses. In the two parts of this study, is made an attempt to show, however, why Spengler cannot be evoked (or dismissed) as the anti-West. Rather, it is a matter of pointing out how the mimetic blurring with the positions of the alleged prophet of doom, in the name of the West's self-love and its exceptionalism, risks confirming the prognosis of the decline, testifying to the misery, or impotence, of the critique aimed at opposing its fulfilment.

[English]: In the unfinished Ideen zur Philosophie der Geschichte der Menschheit (Ideas for the Philosophy of the History of Mankind), Johann Friedrich Herder elaborates his most complete synthesis of a philosophy of the history of the entire human race. In Book XIV, in open conflict with the hagiographic vision established in ancient historiography and widely accepted in the following centuries, the author proposes an original reconstruction of the ancient history of Rome, identified as an unparalleled and unrepeatable model of empire; a model of political organisation at all times hostile to peaceful and just coexistence between peoples. Herder's reflections, focused on themes that are still at the centre of historiographical debate today, anticipate judgements taken up and explored in depth by important thinkers in the first half of the 20th century.

Introduzione A Siddhartha Di Hermann Hesse written by Bernhard Arnold Kruse and has been published by FedOA - Federico II University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-31 with Literary Criticism categories.

[English]:This work aims at being an intellectual biography of Jacques-André Naigeon (1735-1810), an important figure of French Enlightenment. Not only was he very close to Diderot - of whom he was biographer and editor - but he was also a privileged witness of the countless political, social and cultural events that led to the French Revolution. Besides being a convinced atheist, a tireless publisher, a fine connoisseur of Clandestine literature, Naigeon had the opportunity to collaborate in writing the last volumes of the Encyclopédie and to participate in the propagation of heterodox, materialistic and fiercely anti-clerical writings. After the Revolution - at the beginning of which he tried in vain to make himself heard by the Assemblée Nationale - he was then integrated into the "official" culture through the election at the Institut de France: however, even if he is the author of some prestigious works, Naigeon remains exclusively the living testimony of a now unrepeatable cultural season.

The Development Of Greek Biography written by Arnaldo Momigliano and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Arnaldo Momigliano traces the growth of ancient biography from the fifth century to the first century B.C. He asks new questions about the origins and development of Greek biography, and makes full use of new evidence uncovered in recent decades from papyri and other sources. By clarifying the social and intellectual implication of the fact that the Greeks kept biography and autobiography distinct from historiography, he contributes to an understanding of a basic dichotomy in the Western tradition of historical writing. The Development of Greek Biography is fully annotated, and includes a bibliography designed to serve as an introduction to the study of biography in general.

War Against The Idols written by Carlos M. N. Eire and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989-01-27 with History categories.

In the second decade of the sixteenth century medieval piety suddenly began to be attacked in some places as 'idolatry', or false religion. Wherever these ideas became accepted, churches were sacked, images smashed and burned, relics destroyed, and the Catholic Mass abolished. This study calls attention to the centrality of the idolatry issue for the Reformation. It traces the development of Protestant iconoclastic theology and practice, provides a survey and synthesis of its unfolding from Erasmus through Calvin, and lays a foundation for understanding the Reformed ideology that stood in conflict with Catholicism and Lutheranism. Professor Eire's main thesis is that the argument against 'idolatry' was central to Reformed Protestantism, both in its theological aspect and in its political ramifications, and that it reached its fullest and most enduring expression in Calvinism.
