Biografo e primo editore di Diderot, Naigeon fu testimone privilegiato delle innumerevoli vicende politiche, sociali e culturali che sconvolsero la società francese. Ateo convinto, editore infaticabile, fine conoscitore della letteratura clandestina, il giovane Naigeon fece in tempo a collaborare agli ultimi volumi dell’Encyclopédie e a partecipare, con il barone d’Holbach, alla propagazione di numerosi scritti eterodossi, materialisti e ferocemente anti-clericali; dopo la Rivoluzione – la quale lo spinse alla riflessione ma non ad un’attività politica propriamente detta – fu integrato dalla cultura “ufficiale” tramite l’elezione presso l’Institut de France: ma nonostante alcuni lavori editoriali di grande pregio, Naigeon resterà esclusivamente la testimonianza vivente di una stagione culturale ormai irripetibile ./[English]:This work aims at being an intellectual biography of Jacques-André Naigeon (1735-1810), an important figure of French Enlightenment. Not only was he very close to Diderot - of whom he was biographer and editor - but he was also a privileged witness of the countless political, social and cultural events that led to the French Revolution. Besides being a convinced atheist, a tireless publisher, a fine connoisseur of Clandestine literature, Naigeon had the opportunity to collaborate in writing the last volumes of the Encyclopédie and to participate in the propagation of heterodox, materialistic and fiercely anti-clerical writings. After the Revolution - at the beginning of which he tried in vain to make himself heard by the Assemblée Nationale - he was then integrated into the "official" culture through the election at the Institut de France: however, even if he is the author of some prestigious works, Naigeon remains exclusively the living testimony of a now unrepeatable cultural season.

In this late work, Diderot delves playfully into the relationship between bodily sensation, emotion and perception, and asks his readers what it means to be human in the absence of a soul. The Atheist’s Bible challenges prevailing scholarly views on Diderot’s Éléments, asserting its contemporary philosophical importance, and prompting its readers to inspect more closely this little-known and little-studied work. In this timely volume, Warman establishes the place of Diderot’s Éléments in the trajectory of materialist theories of nature and the mind stretching back to Epicurus and Lucretius, and explores the fascinating reasons behind scholarly neglect of this seminal work. In turn, Warman outlines the hitherto unacknowledged dissemination and reception of Diderot’s Éléments, demonstrating how Diderot’s Éléments was circulated in manuscript-form as early as the 1790s, thus showing how the text came to influence the next generations of materialist thinkers. Il militare filosofo è un testo fondamentale per comprendere il materialismo francese del ’700. Pubblicato anonimo nel 1767, è frutto del lavoro congiunto di Jacques-André Naigeon e del barone d’Holbach. Rappresenta la riscrittura – radicalizzata – di un manoscritto già circolante tra gli eruditi francesi, Difficultés sur la religion proposées au Père Malebranche, che solo negli anni ’70 del XX secolo si è attribuito a Robert Challe, tra i padri del deismo francese. Naigeon, poi biografo di Denis Diderot, si serve del manoscritto per divulgare i principi dell’ateismo e per condurre la sua battaglia politico-culturale contro le religioni rivelate. D’Holbach, nell’ultimo capitolo del testo, fa le prove generali per il Système de la nature, di cui Le militaire philosophe è una sorta di anticipazione. Ironico, disincantato, coraggioso, il militare che si scopre pensatore rappresenta la coscienza filosofica del secolo, pronta ormai a liberarsi da qualsiasi tutela e a rifondare interamente la società.

Si tratta di rimarcare, piuttosto, come il confondersi mimetico con le posizioni del presunto profeta di sventura, in nome dell’amor proprio dell’Occidente e della sua eccezionalità, rischi di confermare la prognosi del tramonto, attestando la miseria, o l’impotenza, della critica volta a contrastarne il compimento./[English]: A spectral and haunting figure, Oswald Spengler, with his main work (The Decline of the West) reappears on the scene every time the present is experienced as a moment of crisis or political, ideological, cultural transition. Even in our own time, there are references, researches, and articles that, although in different ways, all seem to be connected by a worried regard for his diagnoses. In the two parts of this study, is made an attempt to show, however, why Spengler cannot be evoked (or dismissed) as the anti-West. Rather, it is a matter of pointing out how the mimetic blurring with the positions of the alleged prophet of doom, in the name of the West's self-love and its exceptionalism, risks confirming the prognosis of the decline, testifying to the misery, or impotence, of the critique aimed at opposing its fulfilment.

La costruzione di nuove identità basate sull’interiorità tende a rafforzare il singolo che affronta la perdita di identità nelle moderne società industrializzate e organizzate dalle razionalità economiche, dove sperimenta l’estraniamento e l’isolamento nella società di massa che permea finanche le socialità digitali. La ricerca sincera e profonda del se che conduce Siddhartha, fa sperimentare delle impostazioni della soggettività che nella lettura oltre alle figure e eventi narrati rafforza attraverso la struttura estetica la fiducia in se stessi e nella capacità di poter affrontare il futuro. L’analisi e l’interpretazione del testo in un procedimento di ‘close reading’, pensato anche, ma non solo per studenti agli inizi dello studio della germanistica, tentano di introdurre in questa dimensione del testo.

[Italiano]: “Ragione” e “razionalita” sono oggi nozioni problematiche: considerate a lungo, nella storia del pensiero occidentale, come tratti distintivi dell’uomo e della civiltà euro-americana, da un certo punto in poi sono state messe in discussione e lacerate dalla crisi e dal malessere di quest’ultima. Alla luce delle controversie più recenti e delle riflessioni sul tema sviluppate nella prima metà del Novecento, questo libro si propone di riaprire la querelle sulla ratio con l’intento di mettere in luce – attraverso una serie di “casi di studio” – la grana sottile dei molteplici significati e usi della nozione di ragione, ma anche di interrogarsi sulle differenti “epoche” della ragione provando a ricostruirne la “storia”. I saggi contenuti in questo volume, dunque, contestualizzano e analizzano le accezioni e le ambiguità del termine ratio e dei suoi derivati nel quadro delle molteplici discussioni che ne hanno ritmato la storia a partire dalla prima modernità, quando il concetto assunse nuove configurazioni rispetto agli usi attestati nel pensiero antico e medioevale, sino al dibattito contemporaneo ./[English]: “Reason” and “rationality” are, today, problematic notions: considered for a long time, in the history of Western thought, as distinctive traits of man and of the Euro-American civilization, from a certain point onwards they have been called into question and ripped apart by the crisis and the malaise of the latter. In the light of the most recent controversies and reflections on the subject developed over the first half of the 20th century, this book aims to riegnite the debate on “ratio” with the intention of highlighting – through a series of “case studies” – the fine texture of the multiple meanings and uses of the notion of reason, but also to question the different “eras” of reason by attempting to reconstruct its “history”. The essays included in this volume, therefore, contextualise and analyse the meanings and ambiguities of the term “ratio” and its derivatives within the framework of the many discussions that have marked its history from the earliest modernity, when the concept assumed new configurations with respect to the uses attested in Ancient and Medieval thought, to the contemporary debate.
