In diversi snodi dell’età contemporanea la relazione tra Russia e Occidente ha occupato un posto nevralgico nei dibattiti delle élite intellettuali e politiche russe circa la specificità e il destino storico del proprio paese, costituendo al tempo stesso un fattore importante nell’autodefinizione dell’identità culturale e dei contorni geostorici dell’Europa e del suo sistema di sicurezza. Il divampare della guerra russo-ucraina ha conferito a un tema già divenuto “classico” una rinnovata, urgente attualità. I contributi specialistici raccolti nel volume spaziano lungo l’arco temporale che dai decenni finali dell’Impero zarista giunge ai giorni nostri, focalizzandosi su argomenti quali l’influente riflessione di Nikolaj Danilevskij su Rossija i Evropa (A. Venturi), l’analisi weberiana del costituzionalismo russo nel 1905-07 (F. Fera), gli elementi occidentalisti nel nazionalismo russo di inizio Novecento (G. Savino), l’apporto dell’emigrazione russa alla riflessione su Occidente/Oriente nel periodo interbellico (R. Gravina), l’Unione Sovietica nella visione di A.J. Toynbee (T. Tagliaferri), la “questione ucraina” tra XX e XXI secolo (R. Valle), la contesa per lo spazio post-sovietico tra Federazione Russa e Unione Europea (M. Puleri). Nell’introduzione G. Cigliano si sofferma sugli aspetti recenti del rapporto tra Russia, Europa e Occidente idonei a interpretare in prospettiva storico-storiografica le radici del conflitto in corso.

Nel dibattito sull’identità storico-culturale della Russia, che costituisce la chiave di volta della riflessione russa in epoca moderna, l’aspetto “Russia e Oriente” è assai meno sviluppato di quello “Russia e Occidente”. Questo studio si propone di mettere in luce le diverse fasi di tale scoperta dell’elemento “asiatico” e “orientale” da parte della cultura russa moderna, un processo al quale parteciparono pensatori di tendenza diversa (Leont’ev, Solov’ëv, Fëdorov), scrittori famosi (Dostoevskij, Tolstoj, Belyj), esoteristi (Blavackaja) e artisti (Rerich). La percezione di un Oriente interno al destino della Russia raggiunse la maturità negli anni Venti e Trenta del Novecento con il movimento eurasista (Trubeckoj, Vernadskij, Mirskij), che vedeva la Russia non una periferia dello spazio europeo, ma un sistema culturale autonomo. Si tratta in effetti di una prospettiva che sta conoscendo una notevole diffusione nel discorso politico della Russia dei nostri giorni, con riflessi importanti anche nella politica estera di questo paese.

Pure nel nostro tempo non mancano richiami, ricerche, articoli che, sebbene in modi diversi, sembrano tutti accomunati dall'ascolto preoccupato delle sue diagnosi. Nelle due parti di questo studio, si prova a mostrare, tuttavia, perché Spengler non possa essere evocato (o scongiurato) come l’anti-Occidente. Si tratta di rimarcare, piuttosto, come il confondersi mimetico con le posizioni del presunto profeta di sventura, in nome dell’amor proprio dell’Occidente e della sua eccezionalità, rischi di confermare la prognosi del tramonto, attestando la miseria, o l’impotenza, della critica volta a contrastarne il compimento./[English]: A spectral and haunting figure, Oswald Spengler, with his main work (The Decline of the West) reappears on the scene every time the present is experienced as a moment of crisis or political, ideological, cultural transition. Even in our own time, there are references, researches, and articles that, although in different ways, all seem to be connected by a worried regard for his diagnoses. In the two parts of this study, is made an attempt to show, however, why Spengler cannot be evoked (or dismissed) as the anti-West. Rather, it is a matter of pointing out how the mimetic blurring with the positions of the alleged prophet of doom, in the name of the West's self-love and its exceptionalism, risks confirming the prognosis of the decline, testifying to the misery, or impotence, of the critique aimed at opposing its fulfilment.
