This is the first comprehensive account of the formation of the Scottish National Party, and it explains the peculiar circumstances in the inter-war era which gave rise to this phenomenon. The text fills a vacuum in one of the most under-researched periods of Scottish history, while its topicality is heightened and spread by contemporary interest in European nationalism. The book is essential reading for students of Scottish history, British political history, politics and Scottish Studies from senior school level onwards. The introductory chapter examines in depth the role of the Scottish Home Rule Association in Scottish politics in the period after the First World War up to the time of its collapse and the formation of the Scottish National Party in 1928. Subsequent chapters comprise detailed accounts of the Scottish National League 1920–28, the National Party of Scotland 1928–33, the formation of the Scottish National Party, the 'Wilderness Years' 1933–39, and the impact of the SNP on Scottish political development during the Second World War. The role of nationalism in Scottish political development is assessed, and the author demonstrates how this period was crucial to the formation of modern Scottish nationalism, and how important this development has been in determining the response of Unionist politicians.

Wouldn’t it be great to be free from financial worries? To be able to live the life you choose instead of working your life away? You can achieve this if you understand how the economy works, how consumerism seduces you into debt, and how to use the tools at your disposal correctly. Financial independence is too important to let others manage it for you. Morten Strange, financial analyst, ‘citizen economist’ and naturalist, draws from his 50 years of experience through the 1973 oil crisis and various stock market crashes and economic recessions to show you how to manage your money so you can be financially free. He explains, in simple terms, the mechanics of financial products and types of investments such as savings, bonds, shares and property, and offers practical guidelines you can apply immediately. What sets this book apart is its focus on the current economy and the ominous direction that it is taking. While most analysts focus on short-term solutions, Be Financially Free takes a global view. In this time of impending ecological limits and the end of economic growth, what will you need to do to achieve – and protect – your financial independence in the long term? Illustrated with charts, diagrams and case studies, this revelatory book will empower you to embark on the path to financial freedom.

This thought-provoking book provides a systematic, philosophically-grounded reconceptualisation of press freedom and press regulation. In a major departure from orthodox norms, the book argues that press freedom and coercive independent press regulation are not mutually exclusive; that newspapers could be made to compensate their victims, through regulation, without jeopardising their free speech rights; that their perceived public watchdog status does not exempt them; and, ultimately, that mandatory press regulation is not unconstitutional. In doing so, the book questions our most deeply-held, intuitive beliefs about the press and its role in society. Why do we say the printed press has a duty to act as a public watchdog when there is no legally enforceable apparatus by which to ensure it does? Why does government constantly recommend that the press regulate itself when history shows this model always fails? Why do victims of press malfeasance continue to suffer needlessly? By deconstructing the accepted view of press freedom and mandatory regulation, this book shows that both are deeply misunderstood. The prevailing notion that the press must serve the public is an empty relic of Victorian ideology that is both philosophically incoherent and legally unjustifiable. The press is obliged to make good, not do good.

"As traditional for-profit news media in the United States declines in economic viability and sheer numbers of outlets and staff, what does and what should the constitutional guarantee of freedom of the press mean? The book examines the current news ecosystem in the U.S. and chronicles historical developments in government involvement in shaping the industry. It argues that initiatives by the government and by private-sector actors are not only permitted but called for as transformations in technology, economics, and communications jeopardize the production and distribution of and trust in news and the very existence of local news reporting. It presents ten proposals for change to help preserve the free press essential to our democratic society"--

Free Sovereign And Independent States written by John Remington Graham and has been published by Independently Published this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-12-06 with categories.

A restatement and rediscovery of the intended meaning of the United States Constitution, this exhaustive volume closely examines the document as originally framed in 1787, implemented in 1789, and amended in 1791, 1798, and 1804. Tracing each provision of the Constitution and its first twelve amendments to its basic roots, John Remington Graham presents a focused yet comprehensive reading of the document, exposing its true legal meaning in a manner never done before. Based on centuries of human experience and legal tradition, the intended meaning of the Constitution has a substantive content that must endure, Graham argues, despite fluctuating judicial interpretations. For good reason, the Framers of the Constitution wanted to assure that judges would resolve disputes upon established principles of law and not legislate from the bench; that responsibility for maintaining the Constitution would be shared as well by the executive and legislative branches of government; and that legal equilibrium across the country would be achieved by prudent distribution of power between the Union and the States. Uniquely, the book considers the founding fathers of the United States, including George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and George Mason, alongside the reigning princes of Europe (Louis XVI and George III)-formidable figures who deeply influenced the fledgling republic. Presenting the immutable and timeless features of the Constitution as it was originally intended and given to posterity, this consummate work is a true treasure of American scholarship, timeless as the magnificent document it deftly illuminates.
