Data warehouses differ significantly from traditional transaction-oriented operational database applications. Indexing techniques and index structures applied in the transaction-oriented context are not feasible for data warehouses. This work develops specific heuristic indexing techniques which process range queries on aggregated data more efficiently than those traditionally used in transaction-oriented systems. The book presents chapters on: - the state of the art in data warehouse research - data storage and index structures - finding optimal tree-based index structures - aggregated data in tree-based index structures - performance models for tree-based index structures - and techniques for comparing index structures.

Data warehouses have captured the attention of practitioners and researchers alike. But the design and optimization of data warehouses remains an art rather than a science. This book presents the first comparative review of the state of the art and best current practice of data warehouses. It covers source and data integration, multidimensional aggregation, query optimization, update propagation, metadata management, quality assessment, and design optimization. Also, based on results of the European Data Warehouse Quality project, it offers a conceptual framework by which the architecture and quality of data warehouse efforts can be assessed and improved using enriched metadata management combined with advanced techniques from databases, business modeling, and artificial intelligence. For researchers and database professionals in academia and industry, the book offers an excellent introduction to the issues of quality and metadata usage in the context of data warehouses.

Data Warehousing And Web Engineering written by Becker, Shirley and has been published by IGI Global this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-07-01 with Computers categories.

Data Warehousing and Web Engineering covers two pertinent topics that are continuously advancing the effective utilization and management of information technology applications. One objective of this book is to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners to share research about technical and managerial issues associated with data warehousing and mining. The other focus of this book is the concept of Web Engineering, as it addresses how the originally intended use of the Web as a distributed system for knowledge-interchange seems to disappear, compared to the increasing number of e-Commerce Web applications. The Web as a global point of sale seems to be very promising but obviously suffered from its heritage ? the coarse-grained implementation model, which makes it harder and harder to develop, run and maintain still growing E-Commerce applications. Consequently, Web Engineering concepts are applied to Web-Based E-Commerce applications.

Intelligent information and database systems are two closely related and we- established subfields of modern computer science. They focus on the integration of artificial intelligence and classic database technologies in order to create the class of next generation information systems. The major target of this new gene- tion of systems is to provide end-users with intelligent behavior: simple and/or advanced learning, problem solving, uncertain and certain reasoning, se- organization, cooperation, etc. Such intelligent abilities are implemented in classic information systems to make them autonomous and user oriented, in particular when advanced problems of multimedia information and knowledge discovery, access, retrieval and manipulation are to be solved in the context of large, distr- uted and heterogeneous environments. It means that intelligent knowledge-based information and database systems are used to solve basic problems of large coll- tions management, carry out knowledge discovery from large data collections, reason about information under uncertain conditions, support users in their for- lation of complex queries etc. Topics discussed in this volume include but are not limited to the foundations and principles of data, information, and knowledge models, methodologies for intelligent information and database systems analysis, design, implementation, validation, maintenance and evolution.
