Excerpt from Index to Material on Picture Study This list is designed to be of use in locating information about material on pictures frequently studied in schools. The need for such a list is apparent, for there are a number of books dealing with picture study in schools, and to locate the material on any one picture requires considerable search. In September, 1912, the Oregon library commission issued a pamphlet on Picture study in the schools which contained among other things an Index to pictures in the state manual. From the idea obtained from this list, a card index on Material on picture study was started in the library of the Eastern Illinois state normal school and has been added to as books on this subject were acquired, until this list is the result. Pictures are entered under different names in different books; an effort has been made to make cross references from the different titles to the one under which the material is listed. A star indicates that there is a reproduction of the painting somewhere in the book, but not necessarily in the pages given in the reference. Daniel Orrells examines the ways in which the ancient world was visualized for Enlightenment readers, and reveals how antiquarian scholarship emerged as the principal technology for envisioning ancient Greek culture, at a time when very few people could travel to Greece which was still part of the Ottoman Empire. Offering a fresh account of the rise of antiquarianism in the 18th century, Orrells shows how this period of cultural progression was important for the invention of classical studies. In particular, the main focus of this book is on the visionary experimentalism of antiquarian book production, especially in relation to the contentious nature of ancient texts. With the explosion of the Quarrel between the Ancients and the Moderns, eighteenth-century intellectuals, antiquarians and artists such as Giambattista Vico, Johann Joachim Winckelmann, the Comte de Caylus, James Stuart, Julien-David Leroy, Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Pierre-François Hugues d'Hancarville all became interested in how printed engravings of ancient art and archaeology could visualize a historical narrative. The European Conference on Technology-Enhanced Learning (EC-TEL 2008) was the third event of a series that started in 2006. The two first editions were organized by Pro- Learn (http://www.prolearn-project.org/), a European Network of Excellence. In 2008, several members of Kaleidoscope, the other European Network of Excellence (http://www.noe-kaleidoscope.org/pub/), joined as co-chair, committee members, reviewers and authors. These two networks are no longer funded, but our aim was to turn EC-TEL into a sustainable series of high-quality events and thereby to contribute to the scientific landscape of technology-enhanced learning. A new network, named STELLAR, will be launched in 2009, with members from both existing networks as well as new members and will support the future editions of this conference.
