In the last few decades, India has experienced several shifts in the policies pertaining to the financing of higher education. These shifts include a move from public financing to keep pace with the expansion requirements of the sector; the strengthening of market forces in higher education both through privatisation of public institutions and operation of private institutions; and a move from the financing of institutions to the financing of students. The Centre for Policy Research in Higher Education (CPRHE) has initiated major research activities to understand how the recent changes have affected the financing of higher education in India and how the higher education institutions cope with and respond to these changes. India Higher Education Report 2018, the fourth volume in the series, presents this study to provide a comprehensive analysis of financing of higher education in India. This book investigates the changing dynamics and related key issues including state-market dynamics, university-industry linkages, foreign aid, institutional strategies to overcome shortages in funding, issues with self-financing courses, educational loans and fee reimbursement schemes, expansion and financing of private higher education.

Higher Education Financing In India written by Jinusha Panigrahi and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-06-07 with Education categories.

This book critically examines the questions related to the access to and financing of higher education in India. The rapid expansion of knowledge economy in the neo-liberal era of globalisation has created an unprecedented demand for higher education, especially skill-based advanced learning. However, the inability of the government to meet the demand for public education, the massification of the higher education and the rapid privatisation of the education sector have now created concerns over financing education and ensuring its equitable access. The volume discusses the challenges faced by aspiring students to meet the rising cost of higher education, as educational policies increasingly favour marketisation of higher education. It sheds light on several alternative and innovative methods of financing, with a focus on educational loans, to highlight how inequities and inequalities affect access to educational loans in countries like India. The book thus explores how this impacts students from the deprived/disadvantaged sections of the society who are unable to access courses and institutions of their choice, and therefore remain unsuitable to get absorbed in the evolving market economy. An incisive read on the economics of education in India, this book will be useful for scholars and researchers of education, higher education, public policy, sociology, development studies, political science and governance, as well as for the policy-makers.

This book studies the various dimensions of gender inequality that persist in higher education and employment in India. It presents an in-depth analysis of the complex challenges women face in higher education participation and in translating higher education opportunities into labour market success and into leadership positions, including in academia. It argues that despite substantial progress towards gender equality in enrolment, these inequalities act as barriers to realising the transformative role that higher education can have for women’s well-being and for the nation’s development. The volume looks at the issues that keep women from accessing the areas of their choice, and the challenges they face in leadership positions in higher education. An important critique of higher education policy and planning, the volume will be of interest to teachers, students and researchers of education, public policy, political science and international relations, economics, feminism, women’s studies, gender studies, law and sociology. It will also be useful for academicians, policymakers and anyone interested in the study of gender in Indian Higher Education.

This volume presents an interdisciplinary framework to map out contemporary educational studies in India. Based on conceptual tools, quantitative methods and ethnographic accounts drawn from extensive fieldwork, it addresses emerging discourses on educational policies, their operation in the everyday functioning of institutions and actual practices in teaching and learning. Individual chapters discuss the intersectionality in the current educational system of region, gender, class, caste and minorities. With comparative perspectives and case studies from across states, including under-studied rural and urban regions of India, the book explores a wide range of issues affecting the educational system, including socioeconomic and gender inequalities; the educational status of tribal settlements in the hinterlands and their respective urban areas; the marginalisation of minorities; challenges in accessing educational avenues and choices; and the model for imparting vocational education and training. It navigates complex sites of discrimination and exclusion in the institutional spaces of the educational system and assesses the consequences of market dynamics and ideological undercurrents. Presenting first-hand information from the field, it evaluates educational policies, practices and research; investigates challenges and failures; provides suggestions and fosters critical thinking for a knowledge society. The findings in this book will be of interest to researchers, scholars and teachers of education, economics, sociology, urban education and the politics of education, as well as of public policy, governance and development studies. It will also be useful to research institutions, policymakers, educationists, social scientists, education professionals, and governmental and non-governmental bodies working on education.
