A prospective superpower, India is still grappling with a host of risks that threaten to hamper its progress. These range from environmental threats caused by GM crops and pollution; dangers to health from HIV/AIDS and maternal mortality; safety concerns about natural hazards, nuclear power, and industrial disasters; and challenges to livelihoods and values. Some of the issues that this volume explores are: what counts as an 'acceptable' risk, and who decides? How should divergent perceptions of risks be reconciled? And, where is the line between science and politics? Advocating a more multidimensional approach to managing risks, the authors challenge many of the dominant perspectives in India. The field of risk research, which has emerged over the last 40 years in the West, has been relatively unexplored in India. In an effort to bridge this gap, this volume brings together Indian and Western scholars and practitioners across the fields of psychology, anthropology, law, politics, sociology, public health, philosophy, science, and architecture, who offer insights on the theory of risk, lessons from the West, and the realities of risk in India.

Essay from the year 2005 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 65%, Edinburgh Napier University, course: International Business, 19 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The globalisation of markets and the globalisation of production towards a more integrated and interdependent world economy is one of the fundamental changes in modern world history. Former isolated countries are opening up and as a result becoming fast growing economies. The two most impressive of all developing countries (emerging markets) for different reasons are China and India. China and India can also be described as newly industrialised economies (NIEs) which are politically stable, have free market systems and are approaching western standards. This report shows the opportunities and risks for multinational companies (MNCs) businesses in China and India, illustrated by several examples of MNCs experiences in those countries. In the end, the analysis leads to a recommendation by the author which of these economies is more attractive to do business in.

India, one of the world's fastest-growing large economies, offers business and investment opportunities across a multitude of sectors. More and more companies around the world are eager to do business in India. This book details the challenges and risks involved as well as providing real suggestions for overcoming them. It begins by providing a background to understanding India and highlights the business environment in which the economic, legal, and cultural variances exist. Potential markets are then discussed, focusing on the sectors, regions, and cities where growth is taking place; the upper, middle, and lower income segments; Indian MNEs; public sector and state-owned companies, and family-owned enterprises. Throughout the book, the author examines the various pitfalls and obstacles that are frequently encountered when operating in India, including political uncertainty and intransigence, corruption, bureaucratic roadblocks, the web of litigation, protecting intellectual property, labor and human resources limitations, and India's ubiquitous second economy. These not only increase risk and lead to costly delays on account of lengthy litigation and payment of bribes, aggravating frustration, but may also result in total loss of investments. The book concludes by providing keys to success, including guidelines for selecting partners and appointing agents, as well as negotiating techniques that work in India. It also includes a comprehensive list of web resources for further exploration, and to connect with government and private sector bodies.

In the mid-1990s, experts predicted that India would face the world's biggest AIDS epidemic by 2000. Though a crisis at this scale never fully materialized, global public health institutions, donors, and the Indian state initiated a massive effort to prevent it. HIV prevention programs channeled billions of dollars toward those groups designated as at-risk—sex workers and men who have sex with men. At Risk captures this unique moment in which these criminalized and marginalized groups reinvented their "at-risk" categorization and became central players in the crisis response. The AIDS crisis created a contradictory, conditional, and temporary opening for sex-worker and LGBTIQ activists to renegotiate citizenship and to make demands on the state. Working across India and Kenya, Gowri Vijayakumar provides a fine-grained account of the political struggles at the heart of the Indian AIDS response. These range from everyday articulations of sexual identity in activist organizations in Bangalore to new approaches to HIV prevention in Nairobi, where prevention strategies first introduced in India are adapted and circulate, as in the global AIDS field more broadly. Vijayakumar illuminates how the politics of gender, sexuality, and nationalism shape global crisis response. In so doing, she considers the precarious potential for social change in and after a crisis.

Financial engineering offers the potential to significantly reduce consumption fluctuations faced by individuals, households, and firms. Yet much of this promise remains unrealized. In this paper, we study the adoption of an innovative rainfall insurance product designed to compensate low-income Indian farmers in case of deficient rainfall during the primary monsoon season. We first document relatively low levels of adoption of this new risk management technology: only 5-10% of households purchase insurance, even though rainfall variability is overwhelmingly cited by households as the most important risk they face. We then conduct a series of randomized field experiments to test theoretical predictions of why adoption may be low.

This paper discusses the impact of the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in the financial sector. It highlights the benefits these technologies bring in terms of financial deepening and efficiency, while raising concerns about its potential in widening the digital divide between advanced and developing economies. The paper advances the discussion on the impact of this technology by distilling and categorizing the unique risks that it could pose to the integrity and stability of the financial system, policy challenges, and potential regulatory approaches. The evolving nature of this technology and its application in finance means that the full extent of its strengths and weaknesses is yet to be fully understood. Given the risk of unexpected pitfalls, countries will need to strengthen prudential oversight.

Risk is detrimental to the financial health of the bank and could threaten its survival. To make the banking function sound and diversify the risk, it is necessary to deal with all kinds of risks related to banking. The future of banking will undoubtedly rest on risk management dynamics. Only those banks that have efficient risk management systems will survive in the market in the long run. The study attempts to analyze the risk management practices of Indian banks (Public and Private Sector) so as to infer the status of risk management in Indian banks. This will help in estimating the strength of Indian banks, their resilience to probable catastrophes, and their preparedness for uncertain events. Based upon the norms declared by the Bank of International Standards, viz., Basel norms, a questionnaire-based survey was performed to gauge the standing of Indian Banks. The primary data required for the proposed study has been gathered with the help of two questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The first questionnaire attempts to explore the perception of employees in the risk management department regarding the risk, risk management practices, and overall risk management philosophy of banks. A total number of 20 banks: 10 Public Sector, 6 Private Sector (New), and 4 Private Sector (Old) Banks have been selected for the study. So, the sample consisted of 100 respondents with 5 employees from each bank. All these respondents belong to the risk management department of the banks under study. The questionnaire is divided into a number of categories that correspond to aspects of the risk management process in Indian banks. The questionnaire includes the following sections: Risk severity, Risk Identification (RI), Risk Assessment & Analysis (RAA), Risk Management Practices (RMP), Risk Monitoring (RM), Mitigation of Risk (MTR), Credit Risk Management (CR), Market Risk Management (MR) and Operational Risk Management (OR). The questionnaire is objective in nature and seeks responses on a seven-point Likert Scale on statements from each section.
