Deep within an inner cave (guhahitam) of our existence remains our potential Divinity. It is the place where our reflected sentient being (the First Bird) is trying to probe into to recover the hidden sun. The allegory is evident in the parable of the Cave once preached by the Upanishads and later by the Greek philosopher Plato. The probe is to push forward the First Bird to surge higher in the resplendent celestial blue under the full radiance of the Solar world, which is the Second, resulting in an explosion of an infinite all-pervading Divinity. Till the union and the rapture is attained, there are the two Birds – one, the psychic being, which is within us and the other one, which is the direct portion of the Divine. The direct portion is constantly trying to guide and work within us, so that evolution goes on and on. In the words of Sri Aurobindo, it is the Çhaitya Purusha, the direct portion of the Divine in the human, which is working incessantly till the rapture is activated. Ancient roots are evident in the ancient Swetaswatara Upanishad hailed by the primordial Sage Kapila and coded originally in a later text called the Bhagabat Purana, The Çhaitya Purusha is also the being that is behind the Chitta, Sri Aurobindo says. Millenniums later, the inspired Architects in the most ancient of all Buddhist ages had carved out the sacred idea in form of rock-cut expressions called the Chaitya hall. As the Mahayana Sutra of the foremost Shurangama at the Crown of the Great Buddha says: …the way of practicing the Samadhi is not singular and its actual method of cultivation depends upon the functioning of mind and mental concomitants (Citta-Chaitya pravritti) of each being and their interconnectedness (Mahat)… It is in the recovery or a re-tracing of the two as a DIVINITY that is originally ONE, an individual's journey called evolution and a collective journey called civilization itself are sustained. It is also from the deeper embedded patterns of this journey the gems of the system's foundation can be quarried.

Local Area Planning in India provides a “comprehensive methodology” toward preparation of local area plans (LAPs) in the Indian context. The planning approach in LAP is opposed to the conventional master planning method. The conventional top-to-bottom approach followed in planning is unrealistic in nature as it does not respond to the ground realities of spatial, economic, sociocultural, environmental and other layers of planning. As a result the city sees social and physical pathologies of great magnitudes. Urban issues like lack of housing for poor, lack of gender sensitivity in planning, lopsided focuses on development perspectives and visions, environmental hazards, drastic demographic shifts, rise in illegal activities and so on are only few of the many problems which arise out of a master planning methodology which is prepared in isolation. On the other hand, a local area plan not only responds to the context but also involves the local people in the planning process, including its timely and lawful implementation and execution. The LAP aims to achieve a holistic vision for the city keeping the focus on the “people” and not the city as a space. The new bottom-to-top approach in planning holistically delves into the intangible aspects of a human settlement which have rarely been used in spatial planning so far. The book explains techniques, tools and methodologies that can be used for quantifying the social components of a human settlement which are most important in spatial planning and often not responded to in master plans or regional plans.

Nandan Nilekani earned his place as an iconic entrepreneur in India in the 1980s, having co-founded Infosys Limited in 1981. In the post-economic liberalisation era, he cemented his reputation as a pioneer in the corporate and information technology world, just as he helped launch Infosys into the big league of world’s IT-enabled services companies. He served as the company’s Chief Executive Officer from 2001 to 2007. At the fag end of his career in Infosys, Nilekani wrote a best-selling book in 2009, Imagining India: the Idea of a Nation Renewed. The book is widely acclaimed for heralding a new, idea-based approach to meet the present and future challenges facing India. It spelt out the theoretical framework for the provision of a unique identity for all its citizens as an important step towards putting, what Nilekani called, “human capital front and center as the main driver of productivity and growth”. His long experience in the corporate world and his passion for the citizen empowerment—as proved in the successful Bangalore Agenda Task Force experiment started in 1999 as well as enunciated in his 2009 book—made him the natural choice to be the first chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) that was being set up by the Union government to provide residents of India with a unique identity and a digital platform—known as the Aadhaar. Nilekani left Infosys to head the UIDAI in July 2009. In five years, Aadhaar has transformed India’s approach to socio-economic justice and equity, and became the lynchpin to the government’s welfare programmes that seek to achieve these goals. It also set the stage for an efficient and transparent mechanism to monitor government programmes, which is crucial to cut waste and slippage in order to maintain fiscal prudence at the national level.
