"In the mid-eighteenth century, the Ottawa chief Pontiac (often spelled Ponteach at the time) led an intertribal confederacy in resisting British power in the Great Lakes region, an event immortalized in the play Ponteach, or the Savages of America. This play, written by infamous frontier soldier Robert Rogers, is one of the earliest theatrical renderings of the region, depicting its hero in a way that called into question eighteenth-century constructions of Indigenous Americans. Sämi Ludwig contends that Ponteach's literary and artistic merits are worthy of further exploration. He investigates the questions of authorship and analyzes the play's content, embracing its many contradictions as enriching windows into the era. Ebe Chandler McCabe, Jr, a retired Navy captain who also had a long career as a nuclear power plant regulator, examines his family history in context with mankind’s. He was born in Philadelphia into a family with an Irish and Polish heritage. His father lost his job during the Great Depression and supported the family as a milkman. Ebe was eight years old when Pearl Harbor was attacked and the nation went to war. He grew up admiring the World War II leadership of President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill and honoring Gold Star families who had lost sons in the war. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy, his over twelve years of active duty ended with Cold War tours on two fleet ballistic missile submarines and a year on the staff of the Atlantic Submarine Force Commander. Later, he joined the Atomic Energy Commission as a regulator of commercial nuclear power plants. He finished over 20 years of that duty with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and also became a Captain in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Join Ebe’s integration of his and mankind’s history and nature.

Today’s Christian pro-life movement has misplaced its priorities. The issue of abortion is more complex than the movement often appreciates. For a start, Scripture is less clear about the moral weight of the fetus than we often think. In fact, early Christians took different positions on abortion because they also relied on different scientific sources about the unborn. Furthermore, Christian conservatives today do not acknowledge that in American history, as today, Christian stances on abortion were motivated by other political fears: White Protestant Americans developed different state laws on abortion to accomplish anti-immigrant goals in the North, but anti-black racism in the South. That messiness impacts U.S. constitutional law, including Roe v. Wade. Meanwhile, Scripture commissions God’s people to confront socio-economic factors that push abortion rates higher: male privilege and the disempowerment of women; the high cost of child raising; the causes of birth defects; the desire to care narrowly for just “my children”; mistaken views about contraception and “the culture wars”; and most of all, poverty. This book incorporates biblical studies, church history, science, social science, history, and public policy to argue that we must not approach abortion policy primarily from a criminal justice standpoint, as modern conservatives do, but from a broad social and economic standpoint meant to benefit and bless all children.
