In this engaging book, Maria Chiara D'Argenio delineates a turn in recent Latin American filmmaking towards inter/cultural feature films made by non-Indigenous directors. Aimed at a global audience, but played by Indigenous actors, these films tell Indigenous stories in Indigenous languages. Over the last two decades, a growing number of Latin American films have screened the Indigenous experience by combining the local and the global in a way that has proved appealing at international film festivals. Locating the films in composite webs of past and present traditions and forms, Indigenous Plots in Twenty-First Century Latin American Cinema examines the critical reflection offered by recent inter/cultural films and the socio-cultural impact, if any, they might have had. Through the analysis of a selection of films produced between 2006 and 2019, the book gauges the extent to which non-Indigenous directors who set out to engage critically with colonial legacies and imaginaries, as well as with contemporary Indigenous marginalization, succeed in addressing these concerns by 'unthinking' and 'undoing' Western centrism and coloniality. Drawing on a wide range of disciplines and considering the entire cinematic process - from pre-production to the films' production, circulation and critical reception - Indigenous Plots in Twenty-First Century Latin American Cinema makes the case for a holistic cultural criticism to explain the cultural and political work cinema does in specific historical contexts. Maria Chiara D'Argenio has published extensively on Latin American cinema and Peruvian visual culture and is lecturer in the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at University College London, UK.

This book presents an innovative comparative view of how the issue of adolescent sexuality and consent is differently treated in various media. Analyzing teenage sexual encounters with adults across a variety of media, including films, television, novels, and podcasts, the volume takes a positive stance on the expression of teenage sexuality, while remaining sensitive to the power of adults to abuse and manipulate. The anthology treats these representations as negotiations between conflicting forces: desire, sexual self-knowledge, unequal power, and the law, the latter both actual legal statutes and internalized law in the philosophical and psychoanalytic sense. Questions of unequal power inherent in such relations are theorized. The authors examine variations of this configuration of sexual relations between teenagers and adults from different perspectives, to consider how various forms of expression rework it formally. These essays are attuned to both nuances of presentation and contexts of reception, and they consider how aesthetics play a role. "By connecting formulations from various disciplines within the humanities and social sciences, Indigeneity in Latin American Cinema critically examines the ways in which indigenous societies are portrayed in Latin American cinema. It reviews how 67 fiction feature films produced between 2000 and 2018, reflect, reinforce, mask or challenge outdated archetypes, and how audiences react to these visual narratives. The underlying notion is that, in spite of important reconfigurations, static conventions of representation still determine the portrayal of indigenous communities in cinema. As the author demonstrates, motion pictures created by local directors seeking to attract the attention of global audiences result in exotifying narratives. The book examines the various strategies deployed to achieve, awe-inspiring cinematic productions that resonate with local and global viewers' preconceptions of what the indigenous entails. The book looks at the contexts in which Latin American films circulate in international festivals and the paradigm shift introduced by Roma (Mexico, 2018). Conclusively, the book provides the foundations of histrionic indigeneity, a theory that explains how overtly histrionic proclivities play a significant role in portrayals of an imagined indigenous Other in recent films."--

Comprehensive examination of how Indigenous peoples have been represented in Argentine film. Affectual Erasure examines how Argentine cinema has represented Indigenous peoples throughout a period spanning roughly a century. Cynthia Margarita Tompkins interrelates her discussion of films with the ethnographic context of the Indigenous peoples represented and an analysis of the affective dimensions at play. These emotions underscore the inherent violence of generic conventions, as well as the continued political violence preventing Indigenous peoples from access to their ancestral lands and cultural mores. Tompkins explores a broad range of movies beginning in the silent period and includes both feature films and documentaries, underscored by archival and contemporary film stills. She traces the initial erotic projection, moving through melodrama to the conventions of the Western, into the 1960s focus on decolonization, superseded by allegorical renditions and the promise of self-expression in late twentieth-century documentaries. Each section includes an introduction to the sociohistorical events of the period and their impact on film production. Analyzed chronologically, the films evidence different stages in the projection of the hegemonic Argentine imaginary, which fails to envision the daily life of Indigenous peoples prior to conquest or in colonial times—and remains in denial of their existence in the present. Cynthia Margarita Tompkins is Professor of Spanish at Arizona State University and the author of Experimental Latin American Cinema: History and Aesthetics.
