How do individual differences interact with situational factors to shape social behavior? Are people with certain traits more likely to form lasting marriages; experience test-taking anxiety; break the law; feel optimistic about the future? This handbook provides a comprehensive, authoritative examination of the full range of personality variables associated with interpersonal judgment, behavior, and emotion. The contributors are acknowledged experts who have conducted influential research on the constructs they address. Chapters discuss how each personality attribute is conceptualized and assessed, review the strengths and limitations of available measures (including child and adolescent measures, when available), present important findings related to social behavior, and identify directions for future study.

This book is an attempt to bridge the gap between differential psychology and human movement. It is curious that each discipline has received considerable attention in its own right but little effort has been made to cross-fertilize them. Some experimentalists view this union as the equivalent of committing academic adultery; they have tended to concentrate on general theories and models of motor control and movement, viewing individual differences as awkward and best assigned to the error variance component of an analysis. By neglecting person variables, valuable information is discarded: people do differ in terms of ability, attitude, motivation and temperament and it is hardly surprising that such differences interact with a variety of experimental and situational para digms. The causes and determinants of individual differences must be examined at an interdisciplinary level, incorporating studies from experimental, physio logical, clinical and educational psychology. This synthesis could not have been actualized by any single contributor. For this reason, a multi-authored approach has been adopted, in which 17 specialists have been assembled to present the current position of individual difference research in their respective disciplines. The authors were granted maximum freedom in their selection and present ation of material. What emerges is, hopefully, a novel and informative col lection of articles addressed to a wide audience and providing an impulse for further research.

Why did Michael Jordan quit basketball and take up baseball? Why was Martina Navratilova so successful as a professional tennis player? These and many other questions about aspects of motivation and emotion in sport are addressed in this book which is newly available in paperback. Reversal theory's systematic conceptual framework allows a unique perspective for interpreting behaviour in sport contexts. Within each chapter, real-life examples are combined with research findings to provide an understanding of the emotional background and changes which accompany the individual's unique experience in sport. In addition, suggestions as to alications of reversal theory in new areas of sport psychology and the future direction of reversal theory-based sport research are outlined. For those interested in a truly insightful understanding of human behaviour in sport, this book will be required reading.
