The 1,165 entries of Handbooks and Anthologies for Officials in Imperial China by Pierre-Étienne Will and collaborators provide a descriptive list of extant manuscript and printed works—mainly from the Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties—created with the aim to instruct officials and other administrators of imperial China about the technical and ethical aspects of government, and to provide tools and guides to help with the relevant procedures. Both generalist and specialized texts are considered. Among the latter, such disciplines as the administration of justice, famine relief, and the military receive particular attention. Each entry includes the publishing history of the work considered (including modern editions), an analysis of contents, and a biographical sketch of the author.

In recent years, research on the history of early modern cartography has undergone remarkable developments. At the same time, European travel accounts and works on China and Japan are also being investigated more systematically. Finally, studies of translations between European and East Asian languages have highlighted the more general issue of how and to what extent representations of the world that prevailed at one end of Eurasia informed and influenced the representations prevailing at the other end of the continent, sometimes to the point that novel forms of representations were being generated. This volume brings together a series of essays on this theme. It is divided into five sections which address as many topics: the textual representation of the 'Other'; 16th- and 17th-century maps of China, Japan and Vietnam; the phenomenon of hybridisation in visual representations; knowledge and representations of the world in Europe and East Asia; and the circulation of representations of the heavens in astronomy between these two regions.

This book explores the global development of the production and trade of silk and related industries from a historical perspective. From the sixteenth to the twentieth century, it takes long-term movements and global dynamics into account. Covering a wide geographical area, including East-Asia, Northern and Southern Europe, and North-America, the respective contributions examine economic activities related to silk production, silk processing, trading and consumption of silk and silk fabrics, while also highlighting diverse paths of industrialization and economic development. The book is divided into three parts, the first of which features contributions on silk markets and trade, covering topics such as auction sales and Sino-European trade. The second part addresses issues of work organization, institutional developments and the gendered division of labour, discussing topics such as systems of home-based and factory production and the organization of quality control. In turn, the third part highlights technological innovations and knowledge transfer. This book appeals to scholars and students of economic history who are interested in a better understanding of the key features and patterns in the development of the silk industry and trade and, more widely, in the global economic history of the early modern and modern periods.

Pieces And Parts In Scientific Texts written by Florence Bretelle-Establet and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-01 with Science categories.
This book starts from a first general observation: there are very diverse ways to frame and convey scientific knowledge in texts. It then analyzes texts on mathematics, astronomy, medicine and life sciences, produced in various parts of the globe and in different time periods, and examines the reasons behind the segmentation of texts and the consequences of such textual divisions. How can historians and philosophers of science approach this diversity, and what is at stake in dealing with it? The book addresses these questions, adopting a specific approach to do so. In order to shed light on the diversity of organizational patterns and rhetorical strategies in scientific texts, and to question the rationale behind the choices made to present such texts in one particular way, it focuses on the issue of text segmentation, offering answers to questions such as: What was the meaning of segmenting texts into paragraphs, chapters, sections and clusters? Was segmentation used to delimit self-contained units, or to mark breaks in the physical appearance of a text in order to aid reading and memorizing, or to cope with the constraints of the material supports? How, in these different settings and in different texts, were pieces and parts made visible?

During the first period of globalization medical ideas and practices originating in China became entangled in the medical activities of other places, sometimes at long distances. They produced effects through processes of alteration once known as translatio, meaning movements in place, status, and meaning. The contributors to this volume examine occasions when intermediaries responded creatively to aspects of Chinese medicine, whether by trying to pass them on or to draw on them in furtherance of their own interests. Practitioners in Japan, at the imperial court, and in early and late Enlightenment Europe therefore responded to translations creatively, sometimes attempting to build bridges of understanding that often collapsed but left innovation in their wake. Contributors are Marta Hanson, Gianna Pomata, Beatriz Puente-Ballesteros, Wei Yu Wayne Tan, Margaret Garber, Daniel Trambaiolo, and Motoichi Terada. Winner of the J. Worth Estes Prize 2021 awarded by the American Association for the History of Medicine: Beatriz Puentes-Ballesteros, “Chocolate in China: Interweaving cultural histories of an imperfectly connected world,” in Harold Cook (ed.), Translation at Word: Chinese Medicine in the First Global Age (Leiden, Boston: Brill | Rodopi, 2020).

Urban Poetics In The French Renaissance written by Elisabeth Hodges and has been published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Literary Criticism categories.
Through a construct she calls urban poetics, Elisabeth Hodges draws out the relationship between the city and the self in early modern French literature and culture, showing the impact of the city in human history and cultural production to be so profound that it cannot be extricated from what we know by the name of subjectivity. Charting a course between cartography, literary studies, and cultural history, this study opens new vistas on some of the period's defining problems.

New Urban Geographies Of The Creative And Knowledge Economies written by Simonetta Armondi and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-10-23 with Architecture categories.
The temporal and spatial intersection of information and telecommunication technologies, creative and knowledge economies, and related new manufacturing systems, has been leading to significant effects on urban socioeconomic and spatial configurations and public policies. Specifically, the post-crisis emergence of innovative workplaces to accommodate these changes, is creating socioeconomic and spatial features that are only recently beginning to be explored in the scholarly literature. According to this scenario, this edited book offers a variety of avenues for exploring the relationships between contemporary production activities and new workplaces in several urban contexts. In particular, it focuses on the consequences of these relationships in terms of regeneration of the urban fabric, as well as on their implication in terms of urban policies. This book represents early observation of the fast-growing phenomenon of new productive activities and workplaces against the background of the gig economy and sharing economy paradigms. Central to this discussion is the investigation of the connection between digital technologies, new works and workplaces, and urban change processes and projects, by providing an additional contribution to new urban agendas for contemporary cities. The chapters originally published as a special issue in the Journal of Urban Technology.
