An effective study of history is often hindered by one's ability to read foreign languages. With this handicap it is often extremely difficult to get beyond the big picture "globalized" account of a specific series of events, with its concentration on simple chronologies. This is particularly the case when dealing with the often controversial topic of anticolonialism and its antithesis, colonialism. These significant topics are rarely studied with a scientific approach as there remain strong emotional reactions to the subject that can paralyze dispassionate judgment. In the context of this subject, the battles are more often ideological than properly historical. Anticolonialism is usually portrayed in a positive, generous perspective, open and liberating whereas any defense of colonialism is often overwhelmed by the perceived irredeemable sins of the past. In the special case of the history of French Indochina, the anticolonialist accepted wisdom presents distorted picture of the colonial story in the Far East. Against this position, the author does not try not to defend the detail of colonization-that has already been done in other works. Rather, he analyzes here, for the first time some of the misleading perceptions of anticolonialist ideology, even to extent of viewing the invention of the concept of "colonialism" as one that does not correspond to reality. He points out the omissions, the chronological inversions and selective exploitation of the events used by the anticolonialist supporters to advance their position. He shows that the anticolonialist position often fails to pass the test of many of the actual facts of the history of the period. A lawyer by profession, Paul Rignachas served with humanitarian associations that work in the countries of French ex-indochina. He has undertaken this controversial work to dismantle the mechanisms of anticolonialism and suggests that in this politically correct stance lie many of the contemporary problems of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. This book is his first work.

How does a nation come to terms with losing a war—especially an overseas war whose purpose is fervently contested? In the years after the war, how does such a nation construct and reconstruct its identity and values? For the French in Indochina, the stunning defeat at Dien Bien Phu ushered in the violent process of decolonization and a fraught reckoning with a colonial past. Contesting Indochina is the first in-depth study of the competing and intertwined narratives of the Indochina War. It analyzes the layers of French remembrance, focusing on state-sponsored commemoration, veterans’ associations, special-interest groups, intellectuals, films, and heated public disputes. These narratives constitute the ideological battleground for contesting the legacies of colonialism, decolonization, the Cold War, and France’s changing global status.

“By using both macro and micro lenses, Eric T. Jennings has written a book which is a model of global history under the guise of a monographic study. He convincingly demonstrates that throughout fifty years, Dalat as a climatic resort built by the French colonizers in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, was upgraded to far more than a mere R&R place for white people. Jennings has kneaded together a huge and rich amount of primary and secondary sources that he masters perfectly due to his sound and balanced method of critical analysis. As we say in French: de la belle ouvrage.” —Pierre Brocheux, author of Indochina: An Ambiguous Colonization, 1858-1954 “Written in a vivid and engaging style, Imperial Heights is an exceptional piece of scholarship. It is impeccably researched, drawing on private, institutional, and national archives in at least five countries. Making wonderful use of ‘thick description,’ Jennings brilliantly recreates the story of one small town to capture the varied and complex history of French colonialism and its afterlives in Southeast Asia.” —J.P. Daughton, author of An Empire Divided

Beauvoir In Time written by Meryl Altman and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-23 with Philosophy categories.

Beauvoir in Time situates Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex in the historical context of its writing and in later contexts of its international reception, from then till now. The book takes up three aspects of Beauvoir's work more recent feminists find embarrassing: "bad sex," "dated" views about lesbians, and intersections with race and class. Through close reading of Beauvoir's writing in many genres, alongside contemporaneous discourses (good and bad novels in French and English, outmoded psychoanalytic and sexological authorities, ethnographic surrealism, the writing of Richard Wright and Franz Fanon), and in light of her travels to the U.S. and China, the author uncovers insights more recent feminist methodologies obscure, showing that Beauvoir is still good to think with today.

"Vietnam 1946 is a masterful narrative of the immediate origins of the first Vietnam War. It is, by turns, vivid and shocking; it is always immensely revealing. Tønnesson brings forensic clarity to crucial events about which, even now, some sixty years later, fundamental misapprehensions exist. An outstanding work of scholarship of major international importance."—Martin Thomas, author of Empires of Intelligence "Tønnesson captures brilliantly the 1946 confrontation between two republics: France determined to redeem itself from Axis humiliation by regaining Indochina; Vietnam equally determined to retake independence after eighty years of colonial servitude. Tønnesson also demonstrates, however, that some leaders on each side really wanted a peaceful, mutually beneficial outcome. Descent into full-scale war was not inevitable. This is a carefully researched, clearly written analysis of a vital moment in the 20th century history of both countries. It is also a meditation on the elusive boundary between free will and determinism in human affairs."—David Marr, author of Vietnamese Tradition on Trial, 1920-1945 “Stein Tønnesson's Vietnam 1946 answers the fundamental question about the first of Vietnam's 20th century wars, the one fought against the French: how did it happen? He has written a meticulously researched account which restores their contingency to the events. The first Indochina war, like those that succeeded it, was not inevitable and Tønnesson explains why and how it happened anyway.”—Marilyn Young, author of The Vietnam Wars 1945-1990
