Three decades of authoritarian rule in Indonesia came to a sudden end in 1998. The collapse of the Soeharto regime was accompanied by massive economic decline, widespread rioting, communal conflict, and fears that the nation was approaching the brink of disintegration. Although the fall of Soeharto opened the way towards democratization, conditions were by no means propitious for political reform. This book asks how political reform could proceed despite such unpromising circumstances. It examines electoral and constitutional reform, the decentralization of a highly centralized regime, the gradual but incomplete withdrawal of the military from its deep political involvement, the launching of an anti-corruption campaign, and the achievement of peace in two provinces that had been devastated by communal violence and regional rebellion.

During much of General Soeharto's 32 year reign as president (1967-98), Indonesia was seen as a successful test case in Third World development, a wayward pariah turned into a shining example of modern economic planning and democracy. Soeharto's New Order government won awards from the United States for the country's advances in family planning, and the nation's massive development plans earned plaudits from the World Bank and international financiers. In reality, behind the New Order's benign facade lay an intricate web of nepotism and corruption along with a persistent wide ranging repression of civil liberties, the full scope of which is now just beginning to become apparent. Indonesia in the Soeharto Years delves into many of the issues and incidents that shaped the nation, from grim years of 1965 and 1966 up until the nation's first direct election of a president in 2004.

Indonesia's President Soeharto led one of the most durable and effective authoritarian regimes of the second half of the twentieth century. Yet his rule ended in ignominy, and much of the turbulence and corruption of the subsequent years was blamed on his legacy. More than a decade after Soeharto's resignation, Indonesia is a consolidating democracy and the time has come to reconsider the place of his regime in modern Indonesian history, and its lasting impact. This book begins this task by bringing together a collection of leading experts on Indonesia to examine Soeharto and his legacy from diverse perspectives. In presenting their analyses, these authors pay tribute to Harold Crouch, an Australian political scientist who remains one of the greatest chroniclers of the Soeharto regime and its aftermath.

Unfinished Nation traces the evolution of Indonesia from its anti-colonial stirrings in the early twentieth century to the lengthy, and eventually victorious, struggle against the dictatorship of President Suharto. In clarifying the often misunderstood political changes that took place in Indonesia at the end of the twentieth century, Max Lane traces how small resistance groups inside Indonesia directed massive political transformation. He shows how the real heroes were the Indonesian workers and peasants, whose sustained mass direct action was the determining force in toppling one of the most enduring dictatorships of modern times. Taking in the role of political Islam, and with considerations on the future of this fragmented country, Unfinished Nation is an illuminating account of modern Indonesian history.

Reformasi written by Kevin O'Rourke and has been published by Allen & Unwin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-07-01 with History categories.

In July 1996, President Soeharto crossed a point of no return. Small but vocal student groups were staging daily demonstrations to demand 'reformasi' - Indonesia's byword for democratic reform. Disturbed by the unprecedented show of dissent, Soeharto cracked down. But by demonstrating that he would cling to power through force, the 74-year-old president dashed hopes for a peaceful democratic transition. The world's fourth largest nation was rolling towards a high-stakes political crisis - pitting reformers against corruptors, Islamists against nationalists, and the elite against the Indonesian people. Drawing on scores of personal interviews and extensive bi-lingual research, Reformasi relates the course of Indonesian politics from 1996 through to the end of 2001. It recounts the collapse of the financial system, the downfall of Soeharto and the relentless power struggles of an unscrupulous ruling class. It unravels the headline-grabbing corruption scandals that bankrupted the economy, while shedding light on the skullduggery behind much of the country's continuing violence and strife - including the Trisakti shootings, the May 1998 riots and the scorched-earth campaign in East Timor. A full six years after Soeharto's July 1996 crackdown, the fate of the world's largest Muslim country still hangs in the balance. Reformasi provides fresh perspectives on political Islam, the prospects for democracy and the implications of military involvement in governance and business. Above all, Reformasi demonstrates that demands for reform are strong and enduring - but so too is the legacy of Soeharto. KEVIN O'ROURKE graduated from Harvard University before moving to Jakarta, where he has worked for eight years as an investment banker, consultant and political risk analyst. Throughout the height of the political transition, he scrutinised events first-hand by authoring the Van Zorge Report, an independent bi-weekly journal on politics and economics.
