The notion of World Englishes which is now being increasingly recognized by most linguists and scholars has stimulated the search for a new linguistic model that can accommodate and facilitate the use of English as a lingua franca. On the other hand, the paradigm of World Englishes also necessitates recognition of various Englishes from different parts of the world. ln Indonesia, more teachers are starting to understand that todays English language instruction is no longer aimed at merely imitating foreign varieties, such as American English, British English. and Australian English. However, they are faced with a dilemma because it means that they might need to give up the long-established prescription for American, British. or Australian English as the only desired language model. The lack of clarity regarding which variety should be used as a model for English language teaching in Indonesia is what underlies the writing of this book. lt is an attempt to identify and describe the linguistic features of Indonesian English in the hope of foreseeing any functional version of the variety which might become a factor in the plurality of World Englishes. With all its limitations, this book seeks to provide a brief depiction of the linguistics of Indonesian English and discussion about the extent to which this variety may be integrated into the practices of English language teaching in Indonesia. "Unlocking the door to a new era in language instruction, this book is a groundbreaking exploration of the evolving linguistic landscape in Indonesia. As English transforms into a global lingua franca, this book navigates the complexities faced by educators, offering a thoughtful and practical guide to incorporating the distinctive features of Indonesian English. A must-read for anyone shaping the future of English language teaching, this work is a beacon of clarity in a world of linguistic diversity." Assist. This book engages with English in globalization, re-examining and re-interpreting the contemporary contexts of its acquisition and use. The chapters contained in this book weave together four inter-related themes that define the role of English in the global context: the ‘centrality of structure’, ‘relationships of interdependence’, ‘social constructions of difference’ and ‘reproduction of inequality’. These themes enable the authors to draw attention to the dynamics of the contemporary realities of the ‘English-speaking’ and ‘English-using’ nations, especially as they compete for cultural, social, economic and symbolic capital in global networks. In engaging World Englishes with the sociolinguistics of globalization, the authors raise some fundamental questions about the status, structure, and functions of World Englishes.

Even as Anglophone power wanes in Asia, and China and India rise, the role of the English language in the region continues to develop. How are students in Asian nations such as Vietnam, Malaysia and China itself being taught English? This much-needed overview analyzes the differing language education policies of selected countries that also include Indonesia, Japan and Sri Lanka. Noting ASEAN’s adoption of English as its sole working language, it traces the influence of globalization on English language education in Asia: in many systems, it pushes local languages off the curriculum and is taught as a second language after the national one. Informed by a comprehensive review of current research and practice in English teaching in Asia, this volume considers the many different roles English is playing across the region, as well as offering an informed assessment of the prospects of English—and Chinese—being a universal language of communication.

Medium Of Instruction Policies written by James W. Tollefson and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-10-03 with Education categories.

Medium of instruction policies in education have considerable impact not only on the school performance of students and the daily work of teachers, but also on various forms of social and economic (in)equality. In many multiethnic and multilingual countries, the choice of a language for the medium of instruction in state educational systems raises a fundamental and complex educational question: what combination of instruction in students' native language(s) and in a second language of wider communication will ensure that students gain both effective subject-content education, as well as the second-language skills necessary for higher education and employment? Beyond this educational issue of choice of language(s) of instruction, medium of instruction policies are also linked to a range of important sociopolitical issues, including globalization, migration, labor policy, elite competition, and the distribution of economic resources and political power. The contributors to this volume examine the tension between the educational agendas and other social and political agendas underlying medium of instruction policies in different countries around the world, and unravel the connections between these policies and the related, critically important educational, social, political, and economic issues. Medium of Instruction Policies: Which Agenda? Whose Agenda? is intended for scholars and specialists in education, language policy, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, and language teaching, and is intended for use in graduate and advanced undergraduate courses on language education and language policy.

This timely volume moves away considerably from traditional topics investigated in studies of multilingualism and linguistic identity to propose new analytical approaches that investigate postcolonial societies from the standpoint of their specific internal structures. The book uses postcolonial multilingual societies as gateways into complex webs of identity construction and group boundary definition, the interplay and functions of oral (indigenous) and written (foreign) languages in multilingual communities, the birth of new diaspora generations at home and abroad, the redefinitions of gender roles, and the impact of linguistic identities on the different nation states focused upon in the contributions. “This book could not be published at a better time. The contributors present informative facts about the complex dynamics of the co-existence of ex-colonial languages with the ancestral languages of their new speakers, and about how, on the one hand, they are embraced by some as socio-economic assets and, on the other, they are treated by others as alienating colonial legacies. The reader will learn about various “ecological” factors that have contributed to the indigenization of English, the maintenance or revitalization of indigenous languages, and the emergence of new cultural identities that foster new forms of linguistic diversity in Asia and Africa. This book is a gold mine of information about postcolonial identity in Africa, Asia, Ireland, and the Americas.” Prof. Salikoko S. Mufwene Distinguished Service Professor of Linguistics and the College University of Chicago
