The notion of World Englishes which is now being increasingly recognized by most linguists and scholars has stimulated the search for a new linguistic model that can accommodate and facilitate the use of English as a lingua franca. On the other hand, the paradigm of World Englishes also necessitates recognition of various Englishes from different parts of the world. ln Indonesia, more teachers are starting to understand that todays English language instruction is no longer aimed at merely imitating foreign varieties, such as American English, British English. and Australian English. However, they are faced with a dilemma because it means that they might need to give up the long-established prescription for American, British. or Australian English as the only desired language model. Political changes since the fall of the Suharto regime in 1998 have had a significant impact on linguistic and discursive practices in Indonesia. The language policy of the state has become less restrictive than in the past, when Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) was vigorously promoted as one of the symbols of the unity of the country's diverse ethnic groups. Monolingualism in public space has given way to more fluid and pluralistic language use, and regional autonomy legislation enacted in 1999 has encouraged expressions of regional identities and aspirations, opening up a space for the promotion and use of regional languages in the media, education and the bureaucracy. Concurrently, technological development, in particular widespread access to the internet, has exposed Indonesian society much more directly than before to global flows of information, giving rise to changes stemming in part from sources outside Indonesia, but interpreted and shaped according to local conditions and socio-cultural practices. The meeting of these two vectors, one generated internally and the other coming from exposure to global trends, is producing a situation of diversity, fluidity and change in language use and discursive practice in contemporary Indonesian society. While contributors to this volume discuss Indonesian-language expression at the national level, a particular focus of the collection is on regional, local and minority languages, where problems associated with decentralization find their counterpart in the role that language plays in the workings of regional and national identity politics.

This study explores the relationship between language selection and identity construction in contemporary Indonesia through an examination of the function of English, a language that still receives stigma from many Indonesians and the government, particularly in Indonesian popular texts published after 1998. Utilizing hybrid critical approaches and interpretive textual analysis, I examine how the socio-political situation has influenced language selection in the period following Suharto's rule (1966-1998), popularly known as the Reformasi era. During both the Suharto (the New Order era) and the post-Suharto (the Reformasi) eras, language use has been central to the construction of a government-imposed national identity. During the New Order era, the authoritarian government passed a language law and other laws to regulate language use in printed and cinematic works. The attitude of the current government in the Reformasi era towards bahasa gado-gado, however, still imitates the New Order era by restricting the use of English and reinforcing the use of Indonesian as the official language. Currently, both the government and many Indonesians see the use of English in otherwise Indonesian texts as a sign of interference with the national identity. In this light, the top-down approach constructs national identity as homogenous, while popular texts demonstrates that Indonesian identities are in fact multi-faceted. Although bahasa gado-gado often receives social censure, I argue that its use does not make its speakers "un-Indonesian" but rather functions as a strategic mechanism to expand our understanding of what it means to be Indonesian. I shed light on bahasa gado-gado as a strategic mechanism of resistance toward policies and social norms that privilege monolingualism. My project contributes to existing research on Indonesian popular culture within literary and cultural studies, adding a new focus on discourse analysis that combines social, political, and cultural perspectives with sociolinguistic analysis. In addition, my project contributes to a small but growing body of literature on written code-switching, which has been less researched than oral code-switching in the field of Second Language Acquisition.

Indonesia has an extreme diversity of linguistic wealth, with 707 languages by one count, or 731 languages and more than 1,100 dialects in another estimate, spoken by more than 600 ethnicities spread across 17,504 islands in the archipelago. Smaller, locally used indigenous languages jostle for survival alongside Indonesian, which is the national language, regional lingua francas, major indigenous languages, heritage languages, sign languages and world languages such as English, Arabic and Mandarin, not to mention emerging linguistic varieties and practices of language mixing. How does the government manage these languages in different domains such as education, the media, the workplace and the public while balancing concerns over language endangerment and the need for participation in the global community? Subhan Zein asserts that superdiversity is the key to understanding and assessing these intricate issues and their complicated, contested and innovative responses in the complex, dynamic and polycentric sociolinguistic situation in Indonesia that he conceptualises as superglossia. This offers an opportunity for us to delve more deeply into such a context through the language and superdiversity perspective that is in ascendancy. Zein examines emerging themes that have been dominating language policy discourse including status, prestige, corpus, acquisition, cultivation, language shift and endangerment, revitalisation, linguistic genocide and imperialism, multilingual education, personnel policy, translanguaging, family language policy and global English. These topical areas are critically discussed in an integrated manner against Indonesia’s elaborate socio-cultural, political and religious backdrop as well as the implementation of regional autonomy. In doing so, Zein identifies strategies for language policy to help inform scholarship and policymaking while providing a frame of reference for the adoption of the superdiversity perspective on polity-specific language policy in other parts of the world.
