Japan Geographical Background To Urban Industrial Development written by David Henry Kornhauser and has been published by Longman Scientific and Technical this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989 with Cities and towns categories.

"Japan has emerged in the years since the end of World War II from a basically agrarian society to its present position as one of the three leading industrial nations of the world. In this, a second edition of Professor's Kornhauser's standard work originally published under the title Urban Japan, the author examines this transformation of the Japanese landscape within an historical geographic framework. Professor Kornhauser begins with a description of the physical landscape, and then reviews the history of agricultural development and change before looking at the history of the city from the eighth century to the present time. The growing importance of a city network from the seventeenth century is emphasised but there are appropriate references to earlier periods of development and to outside influences, especially from China and Korea. The important periods in the rise of cities to dominance in the culture are stressed, with considerable discussion of the Edo Period (1600-1868), the transformations of pre-modern cities in the Meiji Period (1868-1912), and the periods before, during and after World War II. Considerable attention is paid to the effects of external influences such as wars and economic disruptions in shaping Japan's commercial successes and failures. In the concluding chapter Professor Kornhauser summarizes the changes in the Japanese landscape and examines the role of planning, especially in an urban-industrial context, and reviews the problems facing Japan at the present and in the future. For this new edition the text has been thoroughly revised to bring it right up-to-date. The book contains a selective but annotated bibliography and is profusely illustrated. This new edition will consolidate the book's position as an essential text for students and teachers of the geography of Japan, and it will be widely used in courses on urban and economic geography"--Unedited summary from book cover.

Management geography explores the spatial characteristics of management-related issues, especially of firms. This book discusses management geography in Japan and other Asian countries from Asian perspectives. The field has made significant contributions to the global economy but has not been deeply investigated in English-language geographical literature to date. The book addresses the following critical questions: What kinds of challenges do multinational corporations in Japan and other Asian countries face? How are managerial actors in multinational enterprises (MNEs) embracing boundary-spanning activities in a global context? How do firms and related entities cultivate business pipelines and ‘buzz’ within and beyond local regions? How do actors in Japanese MNEs, small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and related institutions embed various managerial processes at overseas locations? This book consists of two parts: Part I discusses the application and roles of Japanese and international managerial practices in the globalizing world. Part II examines changing business communities in the industrial and rural spaces of East Asia, focusing primarily on Japan and China. This work will interest readers in a wide range of fields, including geography, management studies, economics, urban planning and sociology. The book is also suitable for upper-level undergraduate students and graduate students in geography, management studies and related fields.

Contending that Japan's industrial and imperial revolutions were also geographical revolutions, Kären Wigen's interdisciplinary study analyzes the changing spatial order of the countryside in early modern Japan. Her focus, the Ina Valley, served as a gateway to the mountainous interior of central Japan. Using methods drawn from historical geography and economic development, Wigen maps the valley's changes—from a region of small settlements linked in an autonomous economic zone, to its transformation into a peripheral part of the global silk trade, dependent on the state. Yet the processes that brought these changes—industrial growth and political centralization—were crucial to Japan's rise to imperial power. Wigen's elucidation of this makes her book compelling reading for a broad audience.

This book provides a novel perspective on networks and innovation in the field of economic geography and presents new findings through theoretical foundations and empirical analyses. The book focuses on various temporary systems in industrial agglomerations such as joint R&D, trade fairs, business workshops, and international conferences. Following the introduction, Chapter 2 considers the mechanism of the innovation process in which networks function as institutions. Chapter 3 and succeeding chapters conduct empirical research centered on statistical data analysis such as social network analysis and covariance structure analysis, and they determine the real-world situations through interview surveys of related stakeholders. Chapter 3 considers the structure and spatial patterns of R&D networks in Japan by making the structure visible and calculating network indices. Chapter 4 concentrates on local trade fairs held in industrial agglomerations and examines the development of various relationships between related participants. Chapters 5 and 6 shed light on institutional thickness in industrial agglomerations. Chapter 7 spotlights quantitative and metrical examinations of inter-organizational relationships in terms of knowledge flows based on company-level data regarding technological alliances and ownership relationships between global corporations. The studies featured in Chapters 6 and 7 serve to evaluate how Japan’s firms have adapted to radical changes under global competition.
