O livro Industrialização e desindustrialização no Brasil: teorias, evidências e implicações de política tem o objetivo de discutir o processo de industrialização e desindustrialização da economia brasileira, a partir de uma perspectiva teórica, histórica e empírica. A estrutura compreende quatro partes. A primeira, composta por três capítulos, possui natureza mais teórica e destaca a centralidade da indústria para o crescimento econômico, partindo da evolução do debate teórico e das proposições da economia política da desindustrialização evidenciando, ainda, a discussão oportuna em torno da relação entre estrutura produtiva, comércio internacional e fragmentação da produção na economia globalizada. A segunda resgata o processo de industrialização brasileira e discute os desafios trazidos pela desindustrialização no contexto atual. Composta de quatro capítulos, essa seção evidencia a trajetória de longo prazo do país, analisando desde o processo de Industrialização por Substituição de Importações (ISI), nos anos de 1930 a 1980, relacionando as políticas e instituições após a década de 1990 à macroeconomia da desindustrialização, ressaltando a relevância de um projeto nacional de desenvolvimento, bem como alguns dos aspectos regionais da desindustrialização. A terceira seção apresenta evidências empíricas sobre os diversos aspectos da desindustrialização no Brasil e no mundo. Composta por três capítulos, essa seção chama a atenção para as implicações da heterogeneidade estrutural presente nos diferentes da indústria, analisa a relação entre desindustrialização e cadeias globais de valor, bem como sublinha a importância dos sistemas nacionais de inovação para a mudança estrutural. Por fim, a última seção do livro resume as implicações da desindustrialização para a política econômica e traz alguns insights para uma neoindustrialização do Brasil. Globalization and Competition explains why some middle-income countries, principally those in Asia, grow fast while others are not successful. The author criticizes both old-style developmentalism and the economics of the Washington Consensus. He argues instead for a "new developmentalism" or third approach that builds on a national development strategy. This approach differs from the neoliberal strategy that rich nations propose to emerging economies principally on macroeconomic grounds. Developing countries face a key obstacle to growth, namely, the tendency to overvaluate foreign exchange. Instead of neutralizing it, the policy that rich countries promote mistakenly seeks growth through foreign savings, which causes additional appreciation of the national currency and often results in financial crises rather than genuine investment.
