Sie hätte daher nicht entstehen können ohne die Hilfe der Leiter und Mitarbeiter der Stadtarchive von Essen, Gladbeck, Bochum, Reck linghausen und Duisburg, des Westfälischen Staatsarchivs Münster, des Histo rischen Archivs der Fried. Einleitung Wer an das Ruhrgebiet denkt, darüber redet oder gar schreibt, konzentriert sich meist auf die industrielle Prägung der Region und die sozialen, wirtschaftlichen oder ökologischen Folgen dieser Prägung. Und wer sich ausnahmsweise für die Kultur des Industriegebietes interessiert, gerät leicht in den Verdacht, er sei den PR-Kampagnen der Ruhrgebietsstädte aufgesessen, die sich immer wieder bemühen, neue, positiv besetzte Klischees an die Stelle der alten Revier-Bilder zu setzen, und die deshalb lieber über Theater, Museen und Grünflächen reden als über die Reste der altindustriellen Infrastruktur.

Das "Wirtschaftswunder" der fünfziger und sechziger Jahre veränderte die Bundesrepublik Deutschland grundlegend und hinterließ auch in Regionen mit ungünstigen Startbedingungen tiefe Spuren. Bayern etwa mauserte sich von einem finanzschwachen Agrar- zu einem wachstumsstarken Industrieland, das den Vergleich mit anderen westdeutschen Ländern nicht zu scheuen brauchte. Die vorliegende Studie rekonstruiert diesen nachhaltigen Strukturwandel am Beispiel der Region Ingolstadt, die nach 1945 in den Sog der Automobil- und Erdölindustrie geriet und lange Zeit als Paradebeispiel bayerischer Strukturpolitik galt. Die Geschichte eines bedeutenden Unternehmens wie Audi wird dabei ebenso thematisiert wie die symbolträchtige Errichtung des Raffineriezentrums, der Einfluss der Landesplanung, die Transformation von Landwirtschaft und Handwerk sowie die politischen Folgen des beschleunigten sozialen Wandels. Damit liegt erstmals eine Untersuchung vor, die den Strukturwandel der Nachkriegszeit aus der Nahoptik einer differenzierten Regionalstudie betrachtet.
