This dissertation sets out to answer the following question: Are mothers who live outside of respectability represented as change agents in black womens literature? It does this by examining five texts from the late 20th and early 21st centuries. These works come from the following genres: neo-slave narrative, science/speculative fiction, and autobiography. They include: Dolen Perkin-Valdez's debut novel Wench, Nalo Hopkinson's Brown Girl in the Ring, Elaine Richardson PHD to PhD: How Education Saved My Life, Sagashus Levingston's Infamous Mothers: Women Who've Gone through the Belly of Hell and Brought Something Good Back, and Nnedi Okorafor's Who Fears Death? While many of these works are not canonical, they are useful and necessary for this project as they all present examples of the infamous mothers model; the image of the "bad" mom who makes a positive impact on society that is central to the work of this dissertation. To frame the argument of the chapters that ensue and to build the infamous mothers' concept, this project relies on theory and criticism from the following fields: motherhood studies, hip-hop feminism, rhetoric and LGBTQ+ studies.
