"The artists represented in this book reflect the region's hybrid culture and offer competing ideas about Caribbean identity in a variety of works done in the last six years in a wide range of media. Two introductory essays by contemporary-art historians survey the themes treated by the artists and offer insights into the different traditions and contemporary-art scenes in the region. The book contains 200 colour illustrations, including a colorplate section complemented by commentaries that place the individual works in the context of each artist's oeuvre. Artist biographies and a selected bibliography complete the volume."--BOOK JACKET.

Genetic Structure And Selection In Subdivided Populations Mpb 40 written by François Rousset and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-02-15 with Science categories.

Various approaches have been developed to evaluate the consequences of spatial structure on evolution in subdivided populations. This book is both a review and new synthesis of several of these approaches, based on the theory of spatial genetic structure. François Rousset examines Sewall Wright's methods of analysis based on F-statistics, effective size, and diffusion approximation; coalescent arguments; William Hamilton's inclusive fitness theory; and approaches rooted in game theory and adaptive dynamics. Setting these in a framework that reveals their common features, he demonstrates how efficient tools developed within one approach can be applied to the others. Rousset not only revisits classical models but also presents new analyses of more recent topics, such as effective size in metapopulations. The book, most of which does not require fluency in advanced mathematics, includes a self-contained exposition of less easily accessible results. It is intended for advanced graduate students and researchers in evolutionary ecology and population genetics, and will also interest applied mathematicians working in probability theory as well as statisticians.

Set sail with Island Book: The Infinite Land, the second volume in an Evan Dahm's epic fantasy graphic novel trilogy rich with allegory and underlying themes. After their quest to find the Monster, Sola and her friends have gone down separate paths. Sola spends her days on the open seas while Hunder stays close to home as the chief of the unified Sun and Fortress Islands. And Wick? Well . . . it’s almost as if he’s become a ghost. Then their world is thrown into chaos when Alef, the captain of one of Hunder’s ships, brings news of a massive island—a continent—that he says the Sun and Fortress islanders are destined to claim for their own. Alef and Hunder launch an expedition that threatens to bring death and destruction to any who stand in their way. Sola must make a choice—step aside and allow other islanders to die, or risk her own life in order to stop her friend.

Evolutionary Ecology Of Freshwater Animals written by B. Streit and has been published by Birkhäuser this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-11 with Science categories.

Evolutionary ecology includes aspects of community structure, trophic interactions, life-history tactics, and reproductive modes, analyzed from an evolutionary perspective. Freshwater environments often impose spatial structure on populations, e.g. within large lakes or among habitat patches, facilitating genetic and phenotypic divergence. Traditionally, freshwater systems have featured prominently in ecological research and population biology. This book brings together information on diverse freshwater taxa, with a mix of critical review, synthesis, and case studies. Using examples from bryozoans, rotifers, cladocerans, molluscs, teleosts and others, the authors cover current conceptual issues of evolutionary ecology in considerable depth. The book can serve as a source of critically evaluated ideas, detailed case studies, and open problems in the field of evolutionary ecology. It is recommended for students and researchers in ecology, limnology, population biology, and evolutionary biology.

The Grace And The Severity Of The Ideal written by Victor Kestenbaum and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-10 with Philosophy categories.

In this highly original book, Victor Kestenbaum calls into question the oft-repeated assumption that John Dewey's pragmatism has no place for the transcendent. Kestenbaum demonstrates that, far from ignoring the transcendent ideal, Dewey's works—on education, ethics, art, and religion—are in fact shaped by the tension between the natural and the transcendent. Kestenbaum argues that to Dewey, the pragmatic struggle for ideal meaning occurs at the frontier of the visible and the invisible, the tangible and the intangible. Penetrating analyses of Dewey's early and later writings, as well as comparisons with the works of Hans-Georg Gadamer, Michael Oakeshott, and Wallace Stevens, shed new light on why Dewey regarded the human being's relationship to the ideal as "the most far-reaching question" of philosophy. For Dewey, the pragmatic struggle for the good life required a willingness "to surrender the actual experienced good for a possible ideal good." Dewey's pragmatism helps us to understand the place of the transcendent ideal in a world of action and practice.
